    I know we’re constantly told everything old is evil and racist and just Not OK…..but my Grandfather fought with Patton, was kind hearted, and taught me to only judge people by their actions. And Bill Monroe said he liked the Beatles. Just saying we need to stop what’s being told/ taught about our history cause the majority were Good People and this music is Awesome.

    No, this was not shot at the Ryman, but on a soundstage and is lip-sync'd. It was recorded previously with all these players EXCEPT Benny Williams (fiddle). Buddy Spicher was the original fiddler and Benny didn't know what Spicher was playing so his "syncing" is, in fact, way outta sync! - very noticeable in the beginning when the camera focuses on Benny & his fiddle. This cut was from the 1965 movie "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar". Terrible movie, but great artists/musical performances. In this one, besides Bill Monroe & Benny Williams; Jimmy Elrod, gtr; Don Lineberger (left handed!) banjo & James Monroe, bass. Also notice "Gibson" gouged out of the peghead of Bill's mando. Some of Bill's work after Gibson "refurbished" his mando and he was peeved about it.

      jdexposure You're welcome, jdexposure. Not alot written about Jimmy Elrod and I only really know from reading Neil Rosenberg's great books about bluegrass/Monroe. Elrod played banjo, gtr and bass w/ Monroe and recorded on banjo in '57 on the great "Sally-Jo", "Brand New Shoes" and "A Lonesome Road to Travel". Then he replaced Jimmy Maynard on gtr sometime in '64 and recorded "Long Black Veil", "I Live in the Past" and "Old, Old House", plus being in this movie clip. I read that Elrod died at age 70 on 10/15/09. Definitely a strong, but under appreciated Bluegrass Boy.

    the divot in Bill's peghead was made by him when he sent it to Gibson to have it refretted but when it came to back to him the job was not done so Bill cut out the name Gibson and broke off the curly que from the peghead.

    I would also point out that Elrod is playing "old-school bluegrass" rhythm gtr with a thumb pick like Flatt, Carter Stanley, etc and I'll bet anything he's using Monroe's pre-War Martin Herringbone 28, which many of Monroe's gtr players used before it was stolen. Elrod is doing some fine runs here and I think he was actually on the recording of this (which, of course, is sync'd here). He does look a little nervous on camera!

    OK - at 38 seconds into this clip you can see what looks like a large divot in Bills mandolin headstock. I wonder if anyone knows the story about that.

    • @michaelgonzalez7304
      @michaelgonzalez7304 Рік тому

      Bill was not happy about Gibson over spraying his Mandolin and he basically said that at that time that he was done advertising for Gibson. As a result of this, he took a knife and gutted out the Gibson logo. He then took a piece of glass and scrapped off the finish and finally broke off the bottom scroll piece of the headstock which gave it the classic Monroe Mandolin look. Then unexpectedly, someone broke into his house and smashed his number one Mandolin into dozens of pieces. Gibson asked Bill if they could rebuild it for him and he said yes. So, Gibson took a couple months in which they put the Gibson logo back on the headstock as well as the scroll piece on the bottom of the headstock and then sent it back to Bill and he was thankful for Gibson fixing his Mandolin and his Mandolin is now at the Country Music Hall Of Fame in Nashville.

    Funny his being "forced" to play it faster in the reprise, almost as if to pay his due to the Elvis rendition (which, apart from being better, brought the author a lot of money).

    • @mistertaterbug
      @mistertaterbug 6 років тому

      Monroe's arrangement of "Blue Moon" changed to take in some of the flavor of Presley's version. Apparently Bill was making a lot of money off of Elvis' recording. He was enough of a businessman to know what was good for his business.
