Pro tip, don't use deadpan humor at your workplace with coworkers that don't know you very well.
Got asked how I could stay positive in a stressful situation and I said "oh you know, a ray of sunshine, the smile of a colleague and a line of coke and I'm all good" in a deadpan-ish tone.
Well some people sucking at humor arranged my first meeting with HR

More the type of joke there than the deadpan. HR HAVE to check on some kinds of statements. It’s like being in an airport and claiming you have a bomb, expect “the gloves” to be put on as you are asked to step into a side room.

Sarcasm, _as a form of humor_ or deadpan commentary, is _very much not_ a universal thing. And you may have very damaging miscommunications if you don't keep that in mind.
While "saying the opposite to emphasize the point" is a theme found in many cultures, using it as a form of humor, especially deadpan humor, is not.
Especially the form of it as seen in much of the northern Americas.
There is also the use of sarcasm as a form of insult and denigration, but that falls under being rude generally by being insulting.

@@Norxet You reminded me of a video I saw once where a man filmed his check-up with his doctor; after listening to his heart for a moment the doctor asks him "has anyone told you that you have a heart murmur?", the man noticeably surprised and concerned says "No..." to which the doctor follows up with "that's because you don't have one" with the most deadpan delivery I've ever seen.

I'm all for Kronii being her truest self but I also get why people may misinterpret her humor. I think deadpan is harder to grasp in this context, her using an avatar, which by default isn't as expressive as a normal human face, the contrast between usual expressiveness and flat face, isn't as noticeable. There are many non-verbal cues that can't be shared through this medium. I think we should also take into consideration that in a multilingual and multicultural setting as Hololive, and Hololive fandom, nuances can easily be lost. As an ESL, especially at first, you can't pay attention to tone and delivery when you are completely focused on the words and their meanings.

Full agree, a friend from high school does exactly this as her default for almost everything then she just stares at you till her mouth slowly curls up and sometimes when you are on the receiving end just wants to smack them. Deadpan humor relies on either
      1. Them knowing you really well
      2. You saying something so crazy that you can't be serious even if you sound serious
Obviously someone who doesn't know you well isn't going to understand you're joking if you just say something seriously.

I really do poorly with 'false' humour like that, it's always felt mean to me making a joke out of someone else's honest reaction or concern.
I think it teaches people to be emotionally closed off for fear of mockery.

Deadpan humor relies on the double take of the listener, most humor has a punchline which is a change from what you expected
The appeal with Deadpan humor is the fact the tone is consistent the whole time forces the listener to figure out which part of the sentence was the punchline since the punchline isn't delivered differently so it doesn't call attention to itself
Basically the appeal is it forces you the viewer to pay more active attention to figure out whats going on
It's inherinently less obvious what part is serious or a joke and having to figure it out is part of the fun

As someone who uses deadpan humor a lot the joke is ideally never meant to be on the people who react with concern or something, the thing is if someone isn't familiar or a fan of that kind of joke the joke often won't go off well and it may seem like I'm trying to make a joke out of the other person, but really the joke is meant to be on the situation, I don't like to direct jokes at people but at the situation

The problem with deadpan humor is that it doesn't work with sensitive and slow people. 😅 Deadpan one-liners are great when you have the right audience though.

I like deadpan humor too. This is always funny to see how peopel react to your "joke". It's too bad now that lot of people will just become angry and can make tantrum on social network just for that until the person who made the joke is fired of his job before being satisfied. At least, in my country... But still funny, I will prefer losing my job than my deadpan humor, honestly.😏

Deadpan gallows humour doesn't mesh well with americans who are constantly on the look out for something to get mad about. Its all built on sarcasm and satire and there are just so many people that constantly fall for it because they were never taught to look for it.
Let's take Kuro for example. He's always worn his british humour on his sleeve. He's constantly cancelled over it because a large majority of his non-british audience don't get the joke. Or simply put people that want to farm him for clout, intentionally ignore the joke and read it at face value and take words out of context to cancel him.
Kronii is inviting trouble if she wants to do this. I personally encourage it. Because its a good way to cleanse the community of people who were never there for Kronii in the first place. Everyone just needs to be ready to be more intelligent about slander against Kronii and do proper research on the context.
