Considering how much these things cost, and the likely lack of profits that come from them, it makes sense. It makes sense to Cover that 3D lives should have multiple members so the audience is wider. I mean, if they paid for them, and every member wanted one in a month, then that would mean millions of dollars for no profit.

Outside of that there probably is an absurd amount of work that goes into a 3DLive from the logistics, the staff, and the talent.

From a business perspective the concerts exist to gain a short window of high level visibility and community engagement, which is then directed towards merchandise releases, which is what pays for the concert and more. You set up a 3D live for your birthday, and during that you plug your new birthday merch.

    Some advice to overseas fans:
    1) sales from merch promoted during the 3D stream help immensely, don't skip on the merch if you couldn't get the limited set
    2) Distribute information about best ways to order things from the available options.

3D is a celebration and more like the way you paid off your fans support. Indies are also doing it and not for profit. Fans supported you whole year, sending superchats, memberships, buying your merchs, watching you often, interacting with you on chat or twitter, etc.
It is a big commitment too. If you followed indies, you will notice some of them even went break for 1 month just to prepare their 3D. Cover got their own studio, staff, and support network so preparing it might be faster and cheaper but it still costs a lot.

That being said I don't believe they would do these for the purpose of money directly as if they wanted more money there are many MANY easier was to do that (sponsors, merch, personal events without the need of paying support staff, etc); the event, MVs, and 3D lives are indeed passion projects most of the time and if there is any financial benefit it's purely from them being loss leaders or a happy side effect of them doing well~

How much is this minor fee is up to debate, but Lamy in another clip pointed up that they gets way more from merch than from Superchats.
Since is common knowledge that Cover takes half of the net gain from SC (= the donos - 30% taken from UA-cam), it means that the fee on the merch is inferior to half of the net gain, by a lot. Again, net figures can't be given (since they are under contract I guess it would be an NDA), but you can piece parts together.

@@budiisnadi I don't know if it's necessarily that Cover takes a smaller amount from merch sales compared to other stuff, so much as it is that it's just a more efficient stream of revenue for the individual talents. Merch sales don't need to be split with companies outside of Cover, and in general are more consistent. You never know how many superchats you'll get over any given period of time or how much money those supers will contain, but you can reasonably expect merch drops to get sales with every sale being at the same flat price.

I'm glad to see so many calm people in the comment section here.
When it comes to money, there are baseless opinions that companies should pay their talent more, but Cover does.
Last year's average talent compensation was approximately 530,000 USD.
The average is higher for JP members who have a lot of corporate projects and super chats.
Since the expenses for their activities start from here, the talent themselves are not that rich, but they do not have to worry about living.
She probably has better things to do than spend money on 3D streaming.
    It should be respected.

When I argue against this practice, its not about the company giving enough to the talents. Ofc Holo talents make a lot of money. To me it's about ownership. Kronii just spent a lot of money on this, but Cover owns it. How many 3D lives did Mel pay for over the years and now they're gone because of her termination? That's where the problem lies for me.

@@guilguis4820I think that's just the cost of time. I love watching Kaela, but I never watch a single VOD from before 2023. Two years worth of content. While yes, they'll be deleted, realistically there's few people that'll rewatch it. Moreover, there is an actual archive for all vtuber content.

    • @user-nr7jv7vx2l
      @user-nr7jv7vx2l 6 місяців тому +7

I can understand some of what you say.
Mel's dismissal was unavoidable and was resolved between the company and herself, but from a fan's point of view, I wanted an archive of her memories to remain.
When it comes to money, Mel pays for the content she creates, but the company also pays for promotions, managers, modeling, etc.
If she fights for her rights, she will be responsible for the loss.
Since the company prepared a vtuber called Mel Yozora for her activities, there is no way she could continue her activities as she is.
These are the advantages and disadvantages of being an individual vtuber.
She signed the contract after understanding the disadvantages.
She is no longer Mel, but she is still streaming. I'm watching it too, and it's popular. That's what she got.
Mel's channel disappeared because if it was made public, the rights not only to her but also to the illustrators, music, games, etc. would be acquired.
Who will pay for it, manage it, and maintain it? Emotions don't solve the problem.

I dunno how does tax work in Japan, but I read somewhere that 3d live is a good way to burn money so the talent's income does not get over certain thresholds and get into certain tax bracket.
Let's say if your income is 29.999.999 yen annually, your tax is 35%. When it got to 30mil, it got into 50% tax bracket.
So it makes sense if the talent wants to keep their income within certain threshold annually.

In short individual talent who wants their personal project needs to pay it themselves company projects needs to be paid by Cover.

And whats the point of owning it anyways other than nostalgic reason for fans and even if Kronii graduated she definitely dont want her fans to be clinging to her old avatar that she cant use anymore and will want them to move on with her new model.

They don't force her to pay for it - they offer their connections and administrative help for an event she initiated.
If she had to organize everything from top to bottom, it might have effectively ended up several times as expensive. Stuff like finding a venue, planning a schedule, commissioning or licensing all the small assets, finding a team for every aspect, coordinating everyone involved, promoting the whole thing... Even if we assume she paid "retail" price on everything (probably got significantly better deals through association with Cover), the additional work hours that would have required would be time you can't put into other tasks - so you'd effectively miss out on any earnings you would have otherwise made in that time.

And its not the same as Niji as for starters, Hololive talents get more input on merch and an infinitely better cut than 2%. That and Cover has their 3d act together even with EN as their 3d EN concert happened unlike NijiEN's which was canceled for iffy reasons.

Well, it doesn't really... 3D concert streams are expensive and they are likely to just lose money - Kronii herself said it, did you not watch it? If they went and foot the bill for the Birthday concert of 87 talents, they would be losing millions of dollars. Cover may be worth 1 billion dollars on the stock market, but that doesn't mean that it makes anywhere close to as much in revenue or profits. They make 135 million dollars in revenue, but only a little over 16 million dollars is actual profit. So they have pretty low profit margins.
In 2019-2022, the girls would get tens of thousands of dollars in SC's on their birthday stream. That was more than enough to cover the costs, and made it a very profitable event. But those days peoples don't have that much disposable income to throw. So even JP talents have a hard time breaking the 10k line. Is just not worth it anymore.
