  • From the large to the seasonal and everything in between, San Diego County has a number of great waterfalls that are easily accessible during the winter and spring months. For those that are willing to hike a little, these top five destinations, Oak Canyon, Los Penasquitos, Kitchen Creek, Cedar Creek and Three Sisters do not disappoint. Fair warning, if you wait too long, many of these waterfalls will not be present during the hot summer months.

One of the highest falls is what we called Mildred Falls when I was a rescue pilot for the Sheriff's Dept. "ASTREA" unit. It's at the head waters of the El Capitan reservoir. It's seasonal but beautiful site in winter.

Great job on the video! I like three sisters the best, and I can confirm that Cedar Creek is dry during the wrong time of year haha

If you have small kids, Green Valley Falls is a great little watering hole, and a short hike (.4 miles). It is also seasonal. Three Sisters was dry in June, and someone had been life flighted the day before we went out. Bring plenty of water.

Three Sisters is really hit or miss, depending on the winter and time of year. Yet, it’s popularity will always live on. ;) Green Valley is a great hike and very family friendly!

My young neighbor died in the devils punch bowl. Be careful. We almost got heat stroke climbing out of there but it was our fault. Do not hike on a heat advisory day. Many dogs die at cedar creek. Caution.

Thanks for the PSA! If you've seen any of the other videos I make, including my CCF video, I always warn people of the risks of hiking in heat, among other things. At the time of your comment - August - it is not a good time to do many of these hikes in SD as there is no water in these falls and it is dangerously hot. Good looking out for people!

To get to the spectacular portion of the Kitchen Creek Falls you need to go about 50 feet south from the top of the falls to a chute. Drop about 200 feet down the chute to the stream and cross it. Then walk upstream to a spectacular view of this cascade. You need a very wet year for the full effect.

There is a nice waterfall on the aqueduct that feeds lake Wohlford. Right by a small trailer court on Indian land. About 30 feet tall and runs year round.

I like Green Valley, great spot. Problem was for about two years it was closed; other more practical problem is that depending on the year, there will be no or limited flow. There's also great seasonal falls that are semi-hidden in Harper's Creek too near that spot.

@@johnwhitney366 it's not really a hike to get to the falls. You walk down a trail and you get to the falls like in 2 minutes. But there is a hike right next to it I've just never followed it.

August in San Diego is really tough for rivers, seasonal streams, and waterfalls. This year (2021) is a drought year, and from my understanding, none of the falls are flowing currently. There is water at the Old Mission Dam - but that is only because the river flows through there.

I have a question for you. I lived in San Diego as a kid. Moved to Virginia in 1994. When I was about age 7 to 9 I used to hike to a waterfall near my old elementary school. I just recently visited San Diego for the first time in years but couldn't find any online info about a waterfall near my old school. I remember it had some old indian paintings on some rocks and a spot where there was holes in the ground from Indians milling corn. The water flow was a small stream that had carved out rock and ran down in a small gorge until it came out to the waterfall. It prob wasn't very big but can't really say sense I was so small. I went to Westwood elementary school in rancho Bernardo San Diego. If you have any ideas on what I'm talking about I would be grateful. Thanks and appreciate the video good work!!

    • @TheLastAdventurer

Probably Three Sisters, having said that, if there's no water in any of these, there's no swimming - which is a real risk depending on the year and time of year.

Buena Vista Falls is extremely easy to find, and visible from a shopping center off the 78, in Oceanside. Unfortunately, there is no good way to appreciate it because it is an urban location.

Carlsbad has two serious waterfalls... Between between the awkwardly stupid LAW called attractive nuisance law. which allows anyone with a beautiful waterfall or something like that .to be sued like crazy. By any trespasser are idiot that screws them self up there.!!!so with that said Bank of whatever doesn't know what the hell to do with
( box canyon) right below sewage water treatment plant...We used to swim and jump there for years no one ever got sick... Neighboring City of Oceanside. Has no idea what to do with their own waterfall. Next to Walmart that was a sacred Indian site... So the thing about this nuisance law. or sequestering any of these things off. Is it becomes a place for lawbreakers to go... And they trash it out

Depends. If you are talking about San Diego city, then no. It is coastal. But, past the mountains you get some desert. San Diego county is big.
