I bought a cheap driveshaft from EBay and it lasted about 2 months. The metal clips that held the rubber boots on had a slight protrusion, and the clip literally sheared right off as it rubbed against the gearbox housing. This allowed all the grease to spin out all over the sub frame. So one bad design cost me £££. Good video thanks for sharing.
Just checked my local Autozone for pricing. So far the cost of the cv axle and the wheel bearing hub kit is around $130.00. Not too bad a price as far as I'm concerned...and yes, I know that Autozone isn't the greatest place to go for parts, but I don't think we will be keeping the car very much longer so I'm not too worried about it. Thanks for the video. I appreciated how you took the time to replace some surrounding parts along the way. It's just good ethics.
I certainly hope the “talk to much” haters don’t dissuade you from making more videos. The info shared is relevant to the task, concise, and can be herd clearly. I’m a BMW guy also and had to cut three of four axel nuts off to replace the wheel bearings on my 09, 335 Xdrive. However, that’s still not enough to make me want to drive a Ford Focus. And... I’m pretty sure you’re alone in thinking a Focus is sexy! One suggestion is to simply pull the caliper and bracket as one unit. The bracket also provides more flexibility on hanging the unit. Obviously if the piston binds or there’s some other indication of a malfunction then proceed accordingly.
Great video. I watched several CV axle videos before yours and could not find anyone to say a bad inner CV joint would cause the vibration when accelerating as you did. They only mentioned the clicking noise as you said on the outer CV joint. My 2002 Camry 3.0 V6 vibrates badly now upon acceleration. My question to you is how did you determine which CV axle needed to be replaced? The boots on both axles are not leaking grease and are not torn.
If you have ruled out wheel bearings and other suspension parts. Here is my advice from experience. Drive 60mph on curve right up hill or flat, if it vibrates, it's your left CV axle. Curve left up hill or flat, and vibrates, it's your right one. Uphill is best because more weight is shifted to rear and you get more noticeable vibration from your front.
@@davidlewis2297 my car would vibrate going straight but especially going uphill. I found out it was the right CV axle and we replaced it. No more vibration.
My 2013 focus I can move the cv shaft up and down by hand, but the inner socket on the transmission side moves too. Is it common for the splines to wear and become loose, or is it more likely I have a worn transmission bearing?

Not always. I thought same as you. Had issues with two cars. Changed rims, few set of tyres, all suspension rebuild, alingment, Hunter road force balancer - nothing. Steering wheels vibrations after 70 mph while cruising, not so mutch when accelerating + car shake in floor near gas pedal. Caused by worn out inner cv joint.

Hi, I was hoping to change the CV axle on my Vauxhall Astra (GM). The assembly looks very similar. How did you remove the CV axle from the gearbox? Wasn't it held in by the split ring on the end of the splined shaft? Did this require a lot of pulling? How easy is it to insert the new one? Thanks.
thankyou so much for this informative video. You showed me how to take apart everything I ever wanted to know. And thanks for the tidbit about torquing the axle nut
From a stop, floor the gas pedal. You should feel vibration on the bad side. If the outer joint is bad, you will hear noise during cornering on the same side of the bad joint. If the inner joint is bad, you will hear clunking noise during cornering on the other side. Your steering will vibrate like crazy when driving on highway at high speed during long drive, it feels like your wheels are coming off - but this does not always happens. Upon visual inspection, you can see that the rubber boots are damaged or there's grease near the joint.

Can the inner cause clicking or knocking while decelerating? My car is fine under acceleration but clicks and pops when I let off the gas until I get on the brakes, then it stops. Seems like it only happens when there's no load on the drivetrain.
For example the alternator and the cv are the same. In order to test some vehicle parts they have to be disassembled. But, the manufacturer is just made to make the vehicle assembly.

hi. I'm having a similar problem started with a clicking noise every time you pull off from stop. it got to the point that now doesn't make the noise but I feel like something is hitting on the right side wheel and it goes away after the car is giving more gas. the mechanic seem to think is the transmission when I explained that there was some metal shavings on the front differential when I got the oil replaced.
With our focus we're having the same sound but only at lower speeds when we're about to stop or take off I'm thinking its the enter CV Joint as well. I just had to replace the power steering rack and the noise started right after doing that.

to replace a bolt or whatever you can either take the old one in somewhere or look it up online, the hard part is finding the exact name for some of these obscure parts
You can buy a screw/bolt gauge to determine the thread and diameter of the fastener, you can also go to a hardware store, which usually has such gages in the fastener section to determine the fastener sizing. Best to buy an OE bolt, the hardware store stuff is of questionable quality from china.
I'm curious about this too - i've got a 2013 jetta - with an airlift performance suspension in it and recently I've been hearing what sounds like a a cv joint knocking when I am coasting - if I step on the gas or the brake it stops immediately - it seems to happen more frequently at lower ride heights - absolutely no noise when turning, braking normal or even hard acceleration - so I'm sorta stumped, I'd expect under load it would resonate the vibration but none is felt or heard... was in hwy with my 97 volvo and felt wrong vibration then when i went to turn sounded like a metal grinding sound like something broke and when I put it in drive I heard it were but don't hear it in park is it my cv joint
When you pull on the shaft (between the inner and outer boots), are they suppose to move a bit? one side seem to move more than the other side. When I brake the steering wheel shaking, the rotor look fine on both side. so why the steering wheel I brake?
You're in NY? I'm in RI with an 04 Focus. Your whole front wheel assembly looks GREAT! Mine is all rusty. Even my 6-month-old rotors are rusty. What's your secret, don't drive it in winter?
i replaced cv axles on both sides and 6 months later it is happening again. The "shudder" never went away fully. I'm going to buy OEM Motorcraft parts this time around.
Mine did the same after a clutch job.. had to replace transmission which solved it for a few days then the passenger drive shaft gave out so was probably the shaft causing damage which i left too long..

I have a chevy malibu fwd. When I accelerate the car shudders on the left front tire and when I turn right hand down and accelerating from a stop it vibrates. Do you think it is the CV axle ?
Not sure to be honest. The lady who works at the shop that rebuilds them is really anti social, so when I asked her if the axle was in bad shape she just said it needed rebuilding and that is it
Hi, one question, is it posible, that a bad cv can damage the transmission internally?, recently I took my car to the mecanic to give maintance to the cv axles, and after two weeks of driving I notice a noise like a cloc, just after acelerate and release the pedal, , also the reverse gear is not working fine, some times it locks and some times it works like butter, I hope it is not related with the transmission or something. I crawled under the car and I can see that the cv axle, driver side, si a little noisy and a little loose.
Just replaced mine on my murano. For me I had a bit of a shudder mostly felt in the steering wheel which made it hard to diagnose. I really only figured it out when the cv boot (which wasn’t torn and actually in pretty good shape) started throwing grease all over the place.
Thomas Eppetson it was a 2003 I ended up trading it in But before I did it look like a lot of the different ball joints needed to be replaced. Replacing the CV axle helped but it was not an end all fix for me anyways
dont need to bother taking all the brake components off, can be done with them still on, hub nut off pinch bolt off control arm out thats it, maybe take stabiliser off.
I drove myself crazy trying to figure out why my car kept shaking while acceleration. I replace a lot of parts including axles and kept shaking. now I'm thinking I got a bad one from RockAuto
Focuses have a serious issue with terrible OEM motor mounts. It may be that. The parts themselves are pretty easy and cheap to replace. The rear mount is the only pain in the ass. I had a perfectly smooth car for two days when I got them replaced two weeks ago until I got a terrible shake/wobble feel which mechanics have reported to be the driver-side axle. :|
I haven't bought from RockAuto since they sent a bad PCV valve. DIYers who don't know how to test the PCV value could damage the engine if the valve won't close with backpressure from a backfire.
Ive watched a couple vids about replacing CV joints, your the first which also does the lower control arm at the same time. Not sure why?! It looked much better compared to other parts in that wheel casing.
PS why did the older CV joint a bit longer, was that because it was pulled out from the inner part? first thought they had different lenght. EDIT aha i noticed later. the booth on the newer was compressed. Thats why the original one looked longer
Nothing better than seeing someone enjoy what they do good info thanks!

nasze wspaniałe autka , i bezpieczna jazda dla siebie i innych
was in hwy with my 97 volvo and felt wrong vibration then when i went to turn sounded like a metal grinding sound like something broke and when I put it in drive I heard it were but don't hear it in park is it my cv joint
You are fantastic
When you pull on the shaft (between the inner and outer boots), are they suppose to move a bit? one side seem to move more than the other side. When I brake the steering wheel shaking, the rotor look fine on both side. so why the steering wheel I brake?
I have the exact same question
You're in NY? I'm in RI with an 04 Focus. Your whole front wheel assembly looks GREAT! Mine is all rusty. Even my 6-month-old rotors are rusty. What's your secret, don't drive it in winter?
Where in ri are you from?,
Mine just has play on inner is that normal I can shake it with one hand
at 13:44 minutes you're shaking the cv joint but we cannot see whats happening due to position of your camera 🙂
when I accelerate I hear a cracking sound and when I release the clutch. it shifts gears and drives perfectly and its mostly on driver side
Procedures about the same for a RWD vehicle correct?
i replaced cv axles on both sides and 6 months later it is happening again. The "shudder" never went away fully. I'm going to buy OEM Motorcraft parts this time around.
Update? Did it feel like bad engine mounts or chatter?
@@pfsantos007 I believe so but I haven't driven the car much.
"a vibration" doesn't do it justice, its more like a violent shuddering...least with my car it is
thats what im looking for there
same problem
What was it? Thanks
Mine did the same after a clutch job.. had to replace transmission which solved it for a few days then the passenger drive shaft gave out so was probably the shaft causing damage which i left too long..
Enjoyed your video, very informative. After reassembly must wheel alignment be recalibrate ?.
i guess im asking randomly but does someone know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the password. I love any tips you can offer me
@Dorian Conor instablaster ;)
@Maximiliano Rey Thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Maximiliano Rey it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
@Dorian Conor You are welcome xD
I have a chevy malibu fwd. When I accelerate the car shudders on the left front tire and when I turn right hand down and accelerating from a stop it vibrates. Do you think it is the CV axle ?
yep
Same problem with Impala 2003. And Cutlass Supreme 1995.
I'm sure it's inner CV joint. Or maybe outer.
Yeah I had mine rebuilt by a local shop and the vibration went away.
Good! It was the inner? Or the outer CV joint? Both sides?
Not sure to be honest. The lady who works at the shop that rebuilds them is really anti social, so when I asked her if the axle was in bad shape she just said it needed rebuilding and that is it
Hi, one question, is it posible, that a bad cv can damage the transmission internally?, recently I took my car to the mecanic to give maintance to the cv axles, and after two weeks of driving I notice a noise like a cloc, just after acelerate and release the pedal, , also the reverse gear is not working fine, some times it locks and some times it works like butter, I hope it is not related with the transmission or something. I crawled under the car and I can see that the cv axle, driver side, si a little noisy and a little loose.
i have the same problem. did you get it solved? was it transmission?
@@rcoliver2014 i have the same problem. did you ever figure it out / repair?
was the axle the issue???? why no follow up video????
Is it ideal to get a cv axle from Ebay?
Just replaced mine on my murano. For me I had a bit of a shudder mostly felt in the steering wheel which made it hard to diagnose. I really only figured it out when the cv boot (which wasn’t torn and actually in pretty good shape) started throwing grease all over the place.
Jacob Adams What year I'm having a vibrating problem when accelerating.
Thomas Eppetson it was a 2003 I ended up trading it in But before I did it look like a lot of the different ball joints needed to be replaced. Replacing the CV axle helped but it was not an end all fix for me anyways
thanks man big help gonna do the other side too pretty soon.
dont need to bother taking all the brake components off, can be done with them still on, hub nut off pinch bolt off control arm out thats it, maybe take stabiliser off.
I drove myself crazy trying to figure out why my car kept shaking while acceleration. I replace a lot of parts including axles and kept shaking. now I'm thinking I got a bad one from RockAuto
rickyreyes48 You solved the problem?
That original CV joint looked quite new from the outside. I mean the booths where clean, not much rust on the axle. Didnt look that old right?
PS why did the older CV joint a bit longer, was that because it was pulled out from the inner part? first thought they had different lenght. EDIT aha i noticed later. the booth on the newer was compressed. Thats why the original one looked longer
When your whole car is shaking at low speeds or high speeds what does that mean
Bump on your wheel..
