It's not condoning black face in any way shape or form, it's trying to point out Hollywood's hypocrisy when it comes to race as well as open a dialogue for where exactly the line is for what's considered "offensive".
      RDJ's character was just one part of an overarching theme throughout the whole movie. The Simple Jack "never go full retard" ties directly into this too. At what point does an actor appropriating someone else's life stop being art and start being offensive? What is off limits and "too far" and what makes them that way? The movie did an incredible job tackling these questions and most people I've met who have seen it understand that it's deeper than just "haha we made Tony Stark black lmao".

    RDJ did such a good job with the character. The makeup department also did an amazing job. 2 months before the movie came out I was mad because his name was on the poster but I never once saw him on the poster or in the trailer. Then one day I looked at it long enough and my jaw was on the floor. This whole time I was wondering who this random black dude was, so I was not ready for the reveal/lore behind his character. Also he portrayed a black character without needing to rely on stereotypes, while ironically the actual black character was more of a stereotype. Tropic Thunder, great writing, great acting.

    Had Tropic Thunder not had a black actor as part of the main cast then I could see some people getting angry over RDJ’s character, even though his character was funny. But they had an actual black actor in the main cast and their interactions together were absolutely hysterical. Brandon Jackson played his character’s outrage at the best black role in the war film being played by a white actor so, so well. It was great.
    IIRC RDJ was kinda scared and aired the film with the NAACP and they were fine with the character.
    Tropic Thunder is one of the few actually funny movies of the past twenty years.
    Edit: people seem to forget that the film was a comedy poking fun at actors, producers, talent agents, method acting, the whole nine yards. And damn it was true to life too.

    • @ssaylor

      underrated comment. Hot take, I don't think it would have worked, and the backlash would have been real if not for Brandon's character. He was the voice of reason. He voiced all of the criticisms about the situation out loud and was pissed at RDJ's character for the entirety of the movie. For all the wtf moments where we as the audience are like hell no, Brandon's character called it out and we are like hell yeah.

    Jamie's got it 100% right. Most of us Black people weren't offended by the character. Robert D did a good job in that movie. Now, it's a different question if a film uses a White actor to play a Black character when there are millions of available Black actors. But, that wasn't the case here. The role called for a White actor who gets so deep into his role that he lives the part of his Black character. Downey killed it. And the reactions from the Black actor in the movie, Brandon Jackson, made it even better.

    • @Want2SurfNow
      @Want2SurfNow 2 роки тому +161

      But wait.... How can you say it's not right to have a white actor play a black character, but its ok to have a black actor play a white character? As we've seen lately with these adaptations of old movies and such. There is a severe disconnect with the whole "equality" thing because it's only considered moving towards equality when you're giving one certain race or gender more opportunities and complaining when another race or gender gets those same opportunities. We don't live in the 40s, 50s, 60s or even 70s anymore. The notion that we're still "so behind" is just absolutely ridiculous. Jamie said it best, people are just constantly looking for things to bitch about, they search out things to be "offended" by. But the fact is, if you get offended by something thats YOUR fault, because you allowed it to affect you.

A bad break up doesn’t ruin someone’s life, only their feelings. If your poor and do nothing to change your own life, yes you’ll be poor. If you work your ass off you’ll be successful. Nobody is there to make you successful. If you fail out of school that’s your fault. If you don’t have a dad at home that’s your fathers fault. Or lack their of a father. Everyone can change their future. My future wasn’t set by anyone when I was a child or even before I was born. Each person alive can change their own lives. Thinking society is set before your even alive is lunacy and that makes you arrogant. History will not change. If you want a better future you have to work your ass off. So explain how my parents successes make them mine. Their careers have nothing to do with me. If you are lazy and think people just owe you things. You deserve to have nothing. I work my ass off for what I have. I was NOT born into it. You must be talking about the minority who’s parents own companies and are wealthy. They tout an empathetic approach but their inability to understand the target of 99% of "offensive humor" today only highlights either their inability to empathize with other humans and cannot process the joke beyond a single layer, a stunted worldview caused by a below average analytical capacity despite the fact that any average person has the capacity for multidimensional humor, or both...Those angry with "offensive humor", people who spew hate filled, petulant rhetoric while hypocritically calling for egalitarianism, and those who critique the past with today's information all fit under either or both of those categories.
      Someone with real critically applied empathetic tendencies doesn't join the cacophony of screeching petulance that comes with any ostensibly controversial joke or statement, and they don't instantly choose sides of a moral issue due because of race/religion/sexuality/cultural context. Lots of the vocally opinionated today just want to feel included, saying whatever will contribute to the masturbatory echo chamber of static dialogues, intolerance and regressive ideology (despite having stolen the term progressive from people who desire progress). It's an identity thing, seeing as the demonstratively offended just repeat what they think will socially ingratiate them. They do a disservice to very important causes (LGBTQ rights, racial equality, feminism, etc) by being the most vocal and extreme proponents and alienating mostly reasonable, critically analytic people with absurd conclusions, intolerance, hypocracy, and petulant cowardice masked by zealous fervor...sucks scrotals.
      They are to social causes what PETA is to animal rights, I can say as someone who's been a vegetarian since 6 in a meat family that I hate PETA and vegans(who use it as a chance to tell everyone...not for the animals) more than most. Just like the demonstrative offense crowd, they damage the cause by acting like embarrassing morons instead of intelligently changing minds...you know, the thing that would allow for change? lol
