Who cares.
and it was goddamn hilarious lol

man i'm black and i don't know a single black person who was offended by his role in tropic thunder, me and my siblings all laughed our asses off lol
Black people don't need to be offended by it as there's armies of white liberals falling over themselves to take offense on their behalf.
That is because as in everything context matters. They were not trying to demean black people but make fun of the absurdity of Hollywood.
@@CRAZYHORSE19682003 correct.
And as a white guy on the other side, Dave Chappelle doing whiteface is funny as hell too
Exactly!! To be honest I hav5 heard from more white people who ask if I'm offended 🤦🏽♂️😁😁
Jamie’s got a point here: there’s people who want to harm. But when you joke without hate, just doing or saying nonsense stuff or being satirical… why would you be offended? I’m Italian and I’m not offended if some actor does a caricature of italians… I know many people hate Italians, but Im able to understand when somebody jokes to offend or not
If someone were to call you a greaseball, is that offensive or right on the line?
Italian or not, they coulda found a better voice actor for Mario :(
America has a tabbo wity black face because it was used in the days of slavery to dehumanize black peoppe.
Some peoppe cant move on from that. And many peoppe who do use blackface are trying to dehumanize someone. But those cases dont go on tv.
Because the word racist gives power
Wait i am Italian also? I’ve heard of dislike of people Italians but I don’t understand why? I’ve never experienced discrimination, hate or dislike.
When Jamie Foxx said he knows sign language, it didn't even surprise me. Foxx is so friggin talented in so many areas.
That shit had me shook. I've watched this interview a handful of times and somehow forgot about that.

@@jeffdk3837 yeah the only people who seemed to have a problem with it were the ones that didn't see the movie. It's not condoning black face in any way shape or form, it's trying to point out Hollywood's hypocrisy when it comes to race as well as open a dialogue for where exactly the line is for what's considered "offensive".
RDJ's character was just one part of an overarching theme throughout the whole movie. The Simple Jack "never go full retard" ties directly into this too. At what point does an actor appropriating someone else's life stop being art and start being offensive? What is off limits and "too far" and what makes them that way? The movie did an incredible job tackling these questions and most people I've met who have seen it understand that it's deeper than just "haha we made Tony Stark black lmao".

RDJ did such a good job with the character. The makeup department also did an amazing job. 2 months before the movie came out I was mad because his name was on the poster but I never once saw him on the poster or in the trailer. Then one day I looked at it long enough and my jaw was on the floor. This whole time I was wondering who this random black dude was, so I was not ready for the reveal/lore behind his character. Also he portrayed a black character without needing to rely on stereotypes, while ironically the actual black character was more of a stereotype. Tropic Thunder, great writing, great acting.
I honestly can't believe people couldn't recognize RDJ from the start. That's just wild to me. XD
The black character was a faker who was exploiting a black stereotype for money. The white character was doing exactly the same thing, and that was the irony between the two guys. It was poking fun at people's conception of what it means to be "black" in America.
@@Vespyr_ I didn't recognize Tom Cruise until the end of the movie. Perfect makeup, perfect acting.
Casting really should come down to who is best for the role, no matter of colour/ gender/ race. RDJ was brilliant!
LOL RDJ did rely on a stereotype, and he did it on purpose, he plays EVERY black sargeant in every military movie ever made.
Robert Downey Jr was NOT doing blackface, his character in the movie was doing blackface. It was meant to be inappropriate because it was part of the story.
Preach
A distinction which will be waved aside with a simple, "That doesn't make it better."
People see the words, "RDJ in blackface" and immediately throw out any semblance of context. Pointing it out to them is essentially calling them ignorant (by the literal definition of the word) and they're not, in a million, trillion years, going to agree and say you're right.
@@buca117 i mean does the context make it better? Like its a white man playing a white man in heavy makeup to be black, sure in the story it is seen as extremely wrong but still is the action of putting that in the movies plot racist? Would it have been funnier if they casted a black actor? Or did they need to put a white actor through heavy makeup to look black?
@@ianbrown1810 Yeah, because the former is racist, the latter is a joke at racism's expense.
He's wearing blackface despite the fact that there's a perfectly good black "actor" as part of the cast. They (Tom Cruise's character) did it because they wanted to have a black man on the team while also killing off the black guy first, but didn't trust an actual black man to fill the role.
We the audience are supposed to look at that and laugh, because it's a satirical jab at Hollywood racist hypocrisy.
Basically, it's mocking racism by highlighting it. Or by "starting a conversation," to use the overly sensitive crowd's vernacular.
@@buca117 interesting i still dont know how i totally feel about it, the character i remember being very funny. And i feel not really knowing how to feel about it is part of it

Had Tropic Thunder not had a black actor as part of the main cast then I could see some people getting angry over RDJ’s character, even though his character was funny. But they had an actual black actor in the main cast and their interactions together were absolutely hysterical. Brandon Jackson played his character’s outrage at the best black role in the war film being played by a white actor so, so well. It was great.
IIRC RDJ was kinda scared and aired the film with the NAACP and they were fine with the character.
Tropic Thunder is one of the few actually funny movies of the past twenty years.
Edit: people seem to forget that the film was a comedy poking fun at actors, producers, talent agents, method acting, the whole nine yards. And damn it was true to life too.
He didn’t do blackface. He played an actor that did blackface.
It's weird how people missed that considering his final scene which was the Oscars where RDJ's character was not in blackface, it's clear that he was just playing an Australian actor who's doing a blackface.
That's the genius of it and it just works
I’m African-American/Black. This was NOT offensive to me. Mind you, this was also well before everyone was fake “woke”. It’s a difference in being malicious. He killed the role.

Facts. And he’s literally playing a white movie actor, who in the movie is playing the role of a black army sergeant. And they have the actual black actor in the movie roast him multiple times. Every joke has its comedic timing. The Office is a perfect example of a show. It wouldn't work today if it just came out, but it also wouldn't have worked if it came out ten years before it actually did come out. All great comedy is meant for its current audience, and we really can't be looking backwards or forwards at the repercussions it may have. Some people are ahead of their time, some people are behind, and the most (current) popular ones are thriving in the current times
Why its not completely wrong its overthinking, a good joke is a good joke and can be as intemporal as a good music or so

As a representative of the white delegation, we cannot accept this deal. You’ll need a Deshaun Watson type deal for RDJ.
Nah you keep your lemons we have iron man. No deal lol
No thank you hahaha
Comments like this is why the internet was invented!!
Robert wasn't playing a black guy, he was playing a dude disguised as a dude playing another dude
Nico _ dude.
actually he was playing a dude playing another dude disguised as another dude
Wait I thought he was playing a dude, playing a dude, disguised as a dude, playing another dude?
i was bout to say, that first dude had it all wrong
he was playing a dude disguised as a dude, in the role of a dude.
Jamie foxx’s impressions are lowkey fire
people who got offended missed the point of the movie. They were poking fun at extreme method actors but ALSO making fun of the fact that a lot of good roles go to white people. They joke about this in the movie with Brandon Jackson's character when he points out that the role of the best black character was given to a white guy
I'm actually black, and RDJ channeled more than one of my uncles literally perfectly, mannerisms, gesticulation, gait, it made me respect him more as an actor, also it was hilarious!
I believe any actor can do any part, as long as they can act the part, they dont have to look it!
Neither of those words are specifically part of "African American vernacular". Gesticulation refers to gestures; often dramatic or animated ones, while gait refers to how one walks and carries themselves physically.

Margaret Thatcher has been dead for five years... In other news you actually watch Madam Secretary
@@leeroberts4850 Are...you trolling? Use a dictionary, man.
lee Roberts Because those aren't "pop" words, they are actual vocabulary. This isn't slang or anything made up.
RDJ’s role in tropic thunder was a critique of method actors
And it was scathingly accurate
This is The Joe Rogan EXPERIENCE. It's meant to be an escape from reality, accuracy, and context
@@dylanbrocks You just described almost all forms of social media, not just joe rogan.
As a teen I had no idea he wasn't actually a black man playing this role lol. I also didnt know who RDJ was either. And when it sunk in, I still didn't care. It was an epic performance.
It also feels like an ahead of it's time critique of whitewashing movie roles.
@@nightmarefanatic1819 it really was
Tropic Thunder is a masterpiece.
What he said starting from 4:12, its currently been changing for the past few years something i'm so happy to witness
I’m black and the only reason I wasn’t offended by his black face was because when I first watched it, I didn’t realize the black dude was Robert downy jr until about half way through the movie. He did it so well that you can’t even be mad 😂
did u even watch the movie? why would anyone get offended by that? u guys are so sensitive is pathetic
😂same here. Just the other day I saw it again and noticed nick Nolte was In it. Lol
how do you know if it explains he’s a white dude in the beginning
@@jaredbrinkman3343 read the comment again, he never said he didn't realize the actor was white, he didn't realize the actor was rdj
Named Dylan? Okay
Jamie's got it 100% right. Most of us Black people weren't offended by the character. Robert D did a good job in that movie. Now, it's a different question if a film uses a White actor to play a Black character when there are millions of available Black actors. But, that wasn't the case here. The role called for a White actor who gets so deep into his role that he lives the part of his Black character. Downey killed it. And the reactions from the Black actor in the movie, Brandon Jackson, made it even better.
But wait.... How can you say it's not right to have a white actor play a black character, but its ok to have a black actor play a white character? As we've seen lately with these adaptations of old movies and such. There is a severe disconnect with the whole "equality" thing because it's only considered moving towards equality when you're giving one certain race or gender more opportunities and complaining when another race or gender gets those same opportunities. We don't live in the 40s, 50s, 60s or even 70s anymore. The notion that we're still "so behind" is just absolutely ridiculous. Jamie said it best, people are just constantly looking for things to bitch about, they search out things to be "offended" by. But the fact is, if you get offended by something thats YOUR fault, because you allowed it to affect you.
@@Want2SurfNow yo… I think when it comes to culture appropriation, you don’t understand the difference between a black man playing some shit like a marvel super hero who’s usually white , compared to a film

Well said Mr.Foxx, An excellent actor and gracious human being
This topic always makes me laugh as I relate to watching old old westerns from like the 50s, 60s, 70s and almost all the time us Natives were portrayed by caucasians. My pops and I just laughed it off at how dumb they viewed/portrayed us and our way of life and some religion practices/beliefs. Hilarious indeed and we joke about it a lot since we from time to time binge western shows and movies.
Have you read the book Hanta Yo? Do you have any opinions on it?
@Mr. Fingers If you can only play the roles that fit the life you lived, are you even an actor anymore?
@Mr. Fingers I more mean it philosophically, the way people do when they ask the same thing about method actors. If you have to spend a year(or whatever the extended length of timeis) becoming this person and it's a whole process to go back to the person you used to be, are you even acting as them anymore or did you become the character?
At what point does it stop being acting and turn into scripted reality tv? I don't actually have an answer for this, just my opinion.
Same too with East Asians being played by white men in Kong Fu movies.
I was visiting my grandparents and they had a Western on (that was the only thing my grandfather watched anymore) and I was sort of hearing it in the background as we talked and then I looked at it and was shocked. I wanted to know why Geronimo had blue eyes! And my grandfather said that was John Wayne. And I laughed at the ridiculousness of it.
Robert Downey needs an Oscar just for that role alone.
Chuck Taylor Yeah he was nominated for one for best supporting actor in 2009 I think but Heath Ledger got it for The Dark Knight which deserved it a lot.
yeah lol a white dude plays an austrialian actor who plays a black dude who pretends to be a Vietnamese farmer, that shit should have been way bigger than it was lol
And Tom Cruise. He killed it at the end.
Tugg Speedman beat him to it unfortunately
I suppose in the meantime he will have to settle for a twig-man.
His Robert Downey Jr is so good 😂
ya It was pretty spot on
Alex Oliveira no it wasn't, it was Robert Downey Junior and it was great
Rick Sanchez nah it wasn't, it sounded more like an Obama impression
*belch*
just ignore them lol
People need to recognize malicious intent.
It's a basic survival skill.
Robert Downey Jr was so freaking good that at first I didn't know it was him......tom Cruise never knew it was him until the dance at the end with his name...funny movie

Yup
Foxx's explanation of fighting the easy fight against people who mean no harm is profound. We dodge the real, meaningful fights that are dangerous. It explains so much of the world, especially social media.
Yes I totally agree !
Imo, the "woke" movement is either a money grab (where that BLM money go?) or a perverse tactic to divide and conquer, based on misguided feelings.. either way, I dont believe a second the leaders care about black ppl. They may be tackling real issues (on the surface), but in the end, ppl who riot to blackmail a president that is actually trying to help "minorities" even if he doesnt even get 10% of their vote can't really be looking for their best interests
Politicians and corporations actually kill people and people love them.

Correct. SJWs claim to be warriors but go after people who make the OK sign or mis-pronoun.
