At work it is Glock Model 22 .40 S&W. From Gen II, skipped III, to Gen IV, and now Gen V. I loved the Gen II and our Gen V. IV had issues, which the V resolved. Great handling, hardly any recoil. User friendly.

The .40"S&W-180gr JHP has been my EDC of choice since 1990 and to this day out of a Glock 23, and I can't think of a single reason to change anything either... I've shot A TON of .40"S&W-180gr FMJFN in local IPSC and IDPA matches, to the point that in fact my G23gen2 is the handgun I shoot best and trust the most. Of course I changed springs, extractors and such over the years but even with a broken locking block it never craped on me (accuracy when to hell for sure, but it kept on ticking until the end of the match... took me a minute to changed the locking block and when back to play without a hitch). So yeah. You can safely say I'm a fanboy for both the G23 and the .40... I finally came off the fence and finally replaced it lately as my EDC, by a slide milled RMR mounted G23gen3, after a ton of work/practice to "relearn how to shoot" so to speak with the RMR, kicking and screeming if you will but never the less had to face the fact that my eyes are not and won't ever be what they used to be. So yeah. Happy to see there's still people out there who are willing to call it like it is. Thanks for sharing.

History repeats. The FBI and S&W basically re-invented the .38-40WCF. Both shoot .401 jacketed S.P./H.P. 180gr bullets @ 975fps. One uses a slightly bottle necked, rimmed cartridge. The other a straight walled rimless cartridge. But the ballistics are identical. The .38-40 was popular in the border regions of the southwest and respected as a reliable fight stopper. The. 40S&W is proving itself as an equally effective round in the hands of many police departments.

My first EDC handgun was chambered in .40 S&W, everyone gave me wierd looks for it. I did my research on it and I settled on if it's a good defensive round for LEOs and their hand guns it's a good round if you need to protect yourself.
I may switch it up to carry another caliber but .40 S&W was my first love as a round. And I proudly be that wierdo at your local gun club and shop who will swear by them and tell folks to consider this round in your EDC handgun you want (especially as a first time gunowner)
But let's be honest let them shit on .40, while everyone is panicking over 9mm shortages here I am stocked up on .40

It's a shame it's kind of fading out but I don't think it will completely go away any time in the near future. I don't really favor one caliber over another, I like them all. I am a 10mm guy. In fact I bought a S&W 1006 in the early 1990s. I am quite aware most ammo manufacturers make their 10mm load so low and light, they are basically .40 S&W strength. Couple that with Beretta introducing the model 96 and I was hooked on the .40. I no longer have my original .40; However, I do own a newer Beretta model 96A1. A .40 S&W will always be in my collection.

I've been a fan of the .40 since my first gun, a G23 back in around 2002. I like to shoot all cartridges but to me the .40 S&W is the perfect option, you get 9mm platform size and capacity, with bigger bullets but without the bigger frame of the .45/10mm guns. It's also a cartridge that has a lot of potential still left in it, being a solid option not only for self defense but for woods use as well. Back in the '70's there was also a cartridge called the .40 B&S, it was proprietary and never existed much beyond testing, but in essence was an early .40 S&W. The 10mm Auto made it a lot easier for .40 to exist since it was already in production and all they had to do was shorten the 10mm case and use a small pistol primer. People like to hate on the .40 but there's really no sense in it, it's a shame that really only a few gun makers still offer a .40 S&W (The Gen5 Glock .40's are incredible by the way, very accurate and easy to shoot).

I own a glock 23 and its my basic carry weapon in the the winter months, basically because it will have to punch through heavy winter clothing. And the recent study of actual armed incidents has some interesting information. But the most shocking was just how effective was the 40 caliber was just as effective as the 45acp. And the difference was the 45acp was basically not a major effective round over the 40 40cal. And was basically a statistical tie. And I'm sure this caused a major dustup with the 45 crowd. And I highly doubt if this will stem the debate. And I suspect it will only increase it. And I owm a colt 1911 and occasionally I'll take out to the range. But my glock 19 and 23 are my primary carry weapons on a daily basis. And a sig320c is my backup to my primary home defensive ar9 carbine. And my ar15 carbine is my primary all around defensive weapon. And.my four shotguns are my backup defensive weapons. And there is no one perfect defensive weapon basically. It's the best weapon for what your needs are at that particular time or incident. And there has never been and probably never be one one perfect weapon for every defensive situation. And basically it takes a lot of practice to become effective and efficient with a handgun, due to it's short sight radius and it's two points of contact with the weapon. And with a rifle or carbine or shotgun you have three points of contact with the weapon and a longer site radius, which means greater accuracy. And the saying that only a fool brings a handgun to a gunfight, has more truth than most individuals may want to admit to. I guess you could compare to a tool box. And you pick the best tool for the task at that moment.

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb (more like a tree trunk) and say that the 40 caliber will never replace the 9 mm because women in law enforcement have a hard time handling it. In our politically correct world, we can't even say that is a viable reason, but it is so true.

  • @boostimalaka1

The FBI shootout was discussed in my Defensive Tactics class. Maddox was hit immediately by a buckshot pellet and did not shoot after that . Platt was hit through his right bicep the Silvertip 115 grain bullet was stopped by the heart. It was a fatal hit. Platt was determined to continue fighting and determined to kill. The 9mm Silvertip did exactly as designed. The FBI had additional units with Agents armed with AR-15 carbines in the area. The primary unit failed to realize how dangerous these two men were. Agent Grogan had the resources and failed to notify the local police in the area. It was a debacle. The 10mm is one of my favorite calibers. It is a very versatile caliber. The .40 S&W 165 grain load seems to have better results in actual Police shootings compared to the 180 grain loads.

.40 s&w is the ideal cartridge caliber, but 180gr was always too heavy for the .40 s&w, great for the 10mm auto though, between 135gr minimum and 165gr maximum parameters is best, with 155gr/150gr bullet weight being ideal!

I'm kinda bummed Ruger chased a law enforcement or military contract and dropped their SR line for the American, which is only offered in .45 ACP or 9x19. I love my SR40c, and want a full sized SR40 with it. They dropped .40 S&W completely from their line it looks like, and I want a PC Charger, too XD
It's a shame Law Enforcement dropped the .40 S&W, and imo I bet cost was a factor >_> 9mm is just cheaper and like so many things in today's economy it's probably considered "good enough but also cheaper" even after I watch video after video of .40 S&W shining against 9mm and .45 ACP >_> Hopefully I never have to find out personally...
Tbh I "lucked into" .40 S&W - I was new and went "well, it's probably a good balance between 9mm and .45 so let's do that" XD Oh well. If .40 does die, it's cheap and easy to convert my little SRc between the two (for now anyway...)

9mm is used in MP5 as a standard CQB for military applications for years. Now MCK has come out with a chassis. Add a Glock 22 in 40 into that who do you think will win? For best results. 40 died expensive but my thoughts are of buying a conversion kit a 9 to 40 barrel conversion kit swap it whenever necessary and if ammo price jumps up just do a switch. Smart huh

Only way 9mm can approach .40SW is to go +P, so it's an apples and oranges comparison at that point. Best way to see which is the better round is to take a 9mm and a .40 and shoot them side by side at a steel plate rack. There is a decided difference between how they fall down with a 9 compared to how they are totally knocked down by the .40SW. More capacity than a .45, energy in the .357 range, does its business with fewer rounds needed than a 9. What's not to like?

I have an old propane tank handing in my back yard at my shooting range, Shooting 380acp, 9mm, 45acp, and 40cal at it. The 40cal makes the tank swing much more, making bigger dents, and cracking the metal tank.

until glock fixes the unsupported chamber in the .40 s&w handguns it is not good for the .40 s&w, as any unsupported chamber would be for any cartridge caliber
    personally i like the m&p 2.0, i have 2, both chambered in .40 s&w

Buy a custom barrel. Sucks to have to invest more but if you already have a Glock, it's a good investment. As well as a 357 sig barrel. Unfortunately I've sold most of my Glock to go primarily hammer fired. Kept the 19 and 20.

I disagree. My Glock 40sw handles everything factory produced.

@@wooddawg4868 loaded/reloaded ammo in an unsupported barrel chamber is very dangerous because of overloaded powder charges or accidental double powder charges(a very common mistake), if the 9mm glock barrel chambers were unsupported you would see just as many 9mm glock kabooms, same goes for the .45 acp, 10mm auto, .357 sig and even the .380 auto!

Have shoot a ton of .40"S&W 180gr in a Glock 23 over the last 30+ years. Still do every other weekend too. Never had an issue. When I did compete somewhat seriously in local IDPA/IPSC matches and shot reloads (to save some money...), I used a regularly grooved aftermarket barrel so my EDC one would not get fouled by the lead. Again, gazillion rounds out of G23, G27 and G35. Not a hitch. Go figure...
Now I've seen a few KABOOMs over the years out of different pistols, shotguns and rifles, even a S&W K37 revolver once and a Bereta 92FS. In all instances it was traced to negligent quality control reloads with double or more powder charges on way to many recycled cases, as well as obstructed barrels...
So yeah, if you play stupid games, sooner or later you might end up wining stupid prized, regardless of the caliber, make and model used. Just saying...

9mm or .45 ACP. .40 is a political caliber and is inferior. I've shot it many times but I own 9mm and .45 mostly. Definitely no .40 cals

The 40 is trash. Most inaccurate round ever. And it is a dying caliber. No one carries it or uses it. No law enforcement uses it. 40 smith and breaker is the name for a reason. Only people that still use are the gun ho die hards who think it’s superior but it’s not. Let’s be real. It’s a garbage round. Good luck trying to hit anything with it. Plenty of test that show how inaccurate the round is.
