I still love the ending line between Chihiro and her dad. In the Japanese cut there is no final dialogue between them but i love when the dad asks her if she'll be ok and she responds "I think I can handle it." Makes me smile every time, she went through so much for a little girl and came out stronger then ever and she carries her friends with her in memory and her hair tie. Beautiful ending.
@@a.g.demada5263so sad. Should promote it again and hype it up in theatres for those who have not seen it before and fans will definitely come to see it anyway. And include that line in every language ❤
@@a.g.demada5263 many lines were changed from the Japanese. Heck. Even Naruto Shippuden hits deeper with many nuances especially between Sasuke and Naruto at the end which hugely suggested they actually had a thing for eachother but they decided to cheapen it by giving some weak quote for the end… what he said originally as Sasuke vanished again was a lot more meaningful and full of nuances as most of the Japanese living language is in itself.
I believe, canonically Lin is a Weasel spirit. All the staff are animal spirits. Except for Sen. Sen's name literally means "one thousand", and Chihiro means "One who asks a thousand questions". Yubaba steals her name by taking away all the parts of her name except the number, literally dehumanizing her to just a number. Curiously after that, until Haku gives sen her name back she stops questioning everything she sees. So, Yubaba even took that part of her.
I actually had a theory that Lin was a human too but she was lost in the spirit world when she was too young to remember. Notice how she tells Chihiro that one day she's gonna get on that train, she probably knows on some level that that train will take her back home. Plus eeryone treats her like dirt all the time and she's the only spirit who looks remotely human. For all we know her name could've been Linda
Language note about how the name “Chihiro” becomes “Sen”: In Japanese, kanji have multiple pronunciations depending on which other kanji they’re paired with or if they’re standing alone. (Kind of like how “ough” in English has different pronunciations for though, tough, thought, etc.) Chihiro’s name in Japanese is 千尋, “chi” and “hiro.” But the kanji 千 (which means “thousand”) is pronounced “sen” when standing alone. So, when Yubaba takes off the “hiro” part of Chihiro’s name, the remaining kanji 千 is now standing alone and becomes “sen.” (And I looked up just now Haku’s name in Japanese: Nigihayamikohakunushi, which is SO MUCH LONGER than Haku. 😂 )

in a commentary Miazaki said he was part of a group to clean a gunked up stream, they found a bike stuck like in it and when they used a rope to pull out out it took a lot of trash with it, the water was able to flow again. that was the inspiration for the river spirit scene.
I am a 25-year-old Japanese. I watched this movie when I was 4 years old. I remembered how I felt then. The movies made by Ghibli Studio are my favorites.
Such a beautiful film. Every frame is a work of art! I think this is the first Japanese animation ever that really appealed to everybody, even people that don’t like anime. It really shows how impactful this film was.
Spirited away is one of the greatest studio Gibley films, The little girl is voiced by the actress who played Lilo from Lilo and stitch and The boy that she meets is voice by the actor who voiced goofy son Max
Yo this the first anime to win the Oscar for Animated Feature and tbh I’m not surprised at all! This is literally one of my favorite animes of all time, but not just that. The style in this is insanely beautiful!
Giant Baby is named Boh, it’s a boy's name meaning “child of joy” which is fitting for those who see their child as their own little bundle of happiness. Another similar name for the same meaning is Sachiko I believe. ❤
Spirited Away is a true work of art, no question to that, and it beat out Disney, DreamWorks, and Blue Sky in the 2001 Oscar for Best Animated Picture. The scene with the River Spirit was inspired by real life. Miyazaki had joined in to help clean up the banks of a local river and was saddened at the trashy state it was in. The clean up team actually did find a bicycle buried deep in the mud there. Environmental and anti war messages are littered throughout all of Miyazaki's movies.
The stink spirit is a polluted river spirit. In Shintoism - a major religion in Japan, everything has a spirit. The radish has a spirit, the trees, the rocks, the soot, the bowl, the wind, children's toys, the forest animals, all has a spirit. Haku is also a river spirit that has nowhere else to go but the bath house cause his area was filled-up and was replaced by apartments.
Which is why even every object as a fork or chopsticks are treated with care for if they aren't they become negative versions of Yōkai. Same as how a beloved family dog becomes a guardian of that family forever. And at times even gets a statue outside and even inside the house and at times even gets a place by the family ancestral shrines within the home itself!
3:08 The small stone house is usually dedicated to a god who protects children. The god protecting the child was absent, and the father began driving the car erratically after passing the place where the house had been abandoned.
I feel like if you guys enjoyed this, the next best Ghibli movie for you to check out is Castle in the Sky. It's got the same blend of adventure and fantasy, and fun side characters that bring all the laughs.
All of Miyazaki movies are full of ancient knowledge. He was heavily involved in the creation of demon souls. dark souls and bloodborne and elden ring. ❤️
chance randomly showing what he knows of japanese culture made me proud for some reason lol good job! never saw the English dub of this, glad to have seen it here first
One of the things I like? Chihiro squished the spellslug that gave Yubaba full control of Kohaku. So she can't control him absolutely like she used to anymore. Chihiro also caused Kohaku to remember his name. Which means his contract under her has no power to control him either now... and WORSE, means that Yubaba can't just send him away and guarantees him a home at the Bathouse because she meant for his to be ETERNAL due to liking the idea of a dragon servant. So she can't just tear it up even if it's now no longer giving her what she wanted out of the deal. Their dynamic is really, REALLY going to change from this point on, because Kohaku is going to stay at the bathhouse due to no longer having a place outside it... but Yubaba is actually much weaker, just more skilled, than him, and got the better of him the first time by betraying his trust and tricking him. He's not gonna fall for her tricks or trust her again. This means that KOHAKU is basically going to be the boss now, even if it's Yubaba's Bathhouse, because she is gonna want to avoid pissing Kohaku off due to being totall unable to overpower him, make him leave, or control him. The bathhouse is gonna be a MUCH BETTER place with Kohaku there to keep Yubaba in check when needed. Any time she starts going too far, Kohaku is gonna shoot her a glare, and she is gonna back down again grumpily. So Yubaba gets defeated and humbled, even if we don't see it happen we KNOW it does, and Kohaku gets to help all the other contract-holders at the Bathhouse, too and essentially ends her greedy tyrannical reign himself. Truly a happy ending for all.
Let me explain more about Lin - Byakko are kitsune with pure white fur. They can have anywhere from one to nine tails depending on their age. Behavior: Byakko are the most common of the tribes of zenko, or good kitsune. They are associated with Shintō and devote their lives to the service of the deity Inari
The first time Jihiro clinger to her mom it was because she was scared, at the end, it was because she missed her so much. It’s animated very similarly but with context, it means something different.
This Movie is special to me and many of us! I remembered watching this the first time in the old Cartoon Network. This movie opened up to me watching anime like Naruto, bleach, one piece, etc.. And after 10 years im now in my twenties and I saw this movie being displayed in a dvd shop. I thought it was a crime that nobody bought it so I decided to buy it and it brought memories back. I wish I can go back to my childhood days. To the young audience reading this comment make the most of your childhood and teen days. Adulthood isn't as glamorous as you may have envisioned.
Spirited Away is definitely the best, but all the Studio Ghibli films are masterpieces. You really need to watch them all. The top 5, IMO, are Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, and Castle In The Sky.
I found a site with informations about Ghibli movies (it's in french) where it's confirmed that the women aren't humans but nothing about that possibility for Lin
@@a.g.demada5263it's stated that she's not a slug spirit. Wasn't thst like a fansite or something though? There is more about her though. Just hard to find.
Yubaba-the villain in Spirited Away-is said to have been inspired by Yamauba or Onibaba, which is a Yōkai that usually appears in Japanese folklore. Yamauba is a type of kijo (female demon) or a mountain witch who was originally a human but became corrupted and turned into a Yōkai (Japanese ghost such as Yuurei or spirit (Sei). This may be a bit wrong but it’s such a vast set of subject to tell the truth! There are good versions of these sort of entities too with another name that I can’t recall and that’s sometimes hard to find the exact name for the exact thing since there are hundreds of Yōkai! 😂❤
I wouldn't say she's a villain, she's more like an antagonist, she may have turned Chihiro's parents into pigs, but in Eastern cultures it's really common to not eat the food that you use for offering to spirits and ghosts in the past, and it's clear that the world of the spirits had a very traditional way of doing things. And that led to punishing the ones that disobey the traditional rules. There is some good in Yubaba though, she's not completely evil but she's also driven by greed, Miyazaki's characters didn't have clear "good" or "evil" they are human in their core and they may all be messed up to some degree even though they're trying to do the right and good things, they feel real in a way.
@@clairelin0216 it’s as I described… many videos that explain about these types of beings that become like Yubaba when before they used to be alot wiser and were often healers and sages of the area. Both human and non human could become like Yubaba and others that may or not have been shown in the films. But the films definitely showed a heck of alot of Yōkai and other beings which was amazing enough❤️
SO Haku is a dragon - the dragon spirit of Kohaku River. In much of Asian folklore and Mythology, Dragons are incredibly different than the Western concept of dragons. For one, they are more snake like. And two, they are water spirits who represent wisdom and offer guidance to humanity. Unlike Western style dragons that are more like giant fire breathing lizards with the mind of an animal. The collection of spirits were drawn to Sen/Chihiro because she was kind and open - something that does not appear too common in their world. No Face wanted her attention because she was probably the first to acknowledge them and treat them with kindness. Same with the baby and the bird - they began to appreciate Sen's honesty and kindness.
My first ever studio Ghibli movie and what a great introduction for me. The animation, the characters and the music. The icing on the spiritual cake. I’m happy you guys reacted to this phenomenal movie. I also subscribed to you guys a few months ago. I completely recommend Grave of the fireflies, Princess Mononoke or Kiki’s Delivery Service next 🙂
Spirited away was such a beautiful anime, I really enjoy its peaceful animation and storytelling how it reminds me of the good old times as a kid and glad I got to react to it alongside you for my first time. i am truly thankful to have been apart of this experience alongside you may you all have the best dreams and spirit away to eternal peace and happiness
Pay attention to the lyrics of both the English and the original Japanese version of the opening and ending of each GHIBLI film. They connect. Even within the words spoken or even sung at parts of other movies. So pay attention! Especially when you watch Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbour Totoro and then Ponyo right after it.
I’m glad you know what a Yōkai is. Interestingly there are many good kind too and often can depend ion how we treat others around us as well as objects in our daily lives ❤
Princess Mononoke is def more action packed. Idk if you’d want to check it out but it’s my fav tho like all movies there is a criticism or two that I do have.
Sen is also a very sacred number in all the worlds numerology, they being 1000. So its also giving her a spiritual name as Chihiro. is part of the spirit world. Haku is a Japanese name Haku and Gawa being river. So Hakugawa when being more formal. But for mountains you don't say yama like Fujiyama, you say fuji-zan like San at the end of a name depending in what respect level you're using but you speak with respect when addressing or speaking about a mountain. 37:50 well, Chihiro has the kanji for 1000 in it, (I think it’s 1000 questions or something like that) the way it is written. And Sen is 1000 when written stand alone. Yubaba stole the rest of chihiros name to bind her and entrap her.
I've never been an anime fan but I still remember when I was 8 and saw this movie for the very first time on Cartoon Network and damn near traumatizing me 😂
None of the gibli films are related story wise. They just have similar if not the exact same art style. Kinda like brands. Maybe a brand produces clothes, but it also deals in other things like healthcare produce or just produce. Kinda like that. Or if fashion its like a brand has purses, shoes or clothes in general. Think of it like that. Gibli is the studio so it’s something like it branding its own artstyle, and story.
Wow, this was absolutely amazing! Ghibli's movies is way ahead of its time, and it'll ways be remembered! I think that you guys will like Princess Mononoke! Trust me, it's also a blast!
16:15 something. I never thought of tell years and many watches later. Maybe everything is super fragile and aged because spirits don’t put force or weight on things unless they want too. So those steps yeah probably would break the first “person” to walk in it.
Makes alot of sense. Also about the name Sen is the same feature! Here is why - Sen is also a very sacred number in all the worlds numerology. So its also giving her a spiritual name as Chihiro. is part of the spirit world. Haku is also Japanese name Haku, and Gawa being river instead of Kawa so Hakugawa, he has another name but its much longer. So Hakugawa when being more formal. This is one of my favorite Ghibli movies, I fell in love with it when my music teacher showed it in class when I was 12, and now I show it to my little sister who is 10, it's just crazy how I can recall the entire movie even when I know I'm doing a rewatch after 9 years. And I enjoyed it even more as an adult, I'm always interested in those supernatural genre stories and this is just perfect for me. My little sister got scared when I showed this to her, but a huge part of my mind was occupied by how handsome Haku looked, especially with his eyes sparkling and smiling like that, I still remember how when I was 12, my classmates would say that Haku was bound to make the girls who watch the movie fall in love with him, I didn't care much about that comment back then, but now here I am, telling my little sister how handsome Haku is in the movie when she's way too scared to watch it lol.

Same as how a beloved family dog becomes a guardian of that family forever. The "familiar song" is composed by Joe Hisaishi for this movie. He made the music for almost all if not all Ghibli movies and they are all classics. I would love to see you react to other Ghibli movies. Maybe either The Castle in the Sky or Howl's Moving Castle next. Both are wonderful.

@@gtaslayer504 I think it depends on the reaction channel and the content they react (although that is subjective and another story). The only other reaction channels besides 3 Katanas (who so far only did Spirited Away) to react to the films of Studio Ghibli are LIPPSSMACKER, WorkingTitleReacts, Reel-Time and Suzy Lu as those channels especially the latter still having the reactions up and not copyright claimed by Studio Ghibli. I remember Stephanie Best reacted to Some Studio Ghibli films such as _Princess Mononoke_ and _Spirited Away_ two years ago unfortunately they were taken down a year or two later after being uploaded. The obvious reason as to why they’re not as many reactors doing reactions to the films of Studio Ghibli is because of international Copyright by Studio Ghibli, who have been notorious on taking down clips, videos, music and reactions of anything related to Ghibli hence why the majority of the reaction channels (despite loving the films of Studio Ghibli) hardly do the reactions of Studio Ghibli and the films by Hayao Miyazaki, as they are cautious that those video reactions they did would be copyrighted claimed by Studio Ghibli themselves.

yep studio ghibli is full of irresponsible parents or reckless driving parents most people this these movies are beautiful and happy but i find them terrifying, like horror for children. i love them! dont get me wrong but they terrify me!
20:44 I might be mistaken but I think all the female servants, Lin included, are slugs/snails just as all the male servants are frogs/toads or something like that
The more I watch this movie the more I can not understand how in the heck the parents weren't the ones expected to learn a lesson. They drive irresponsibly, don't have their child wearing a seat belt, and decide to take a stroll through a creepy tunnel with the mother willingly to leave their kid waiting in the car. Next they see a buffet of fresh food with absolutely nobody anywhere close to it, and decide to eat an ungodly amount like a stereotypical American at a Vegas buffet (I'm an American, so I would know). Meanwhile, Chirhiro, the actual child. shows the most rational judgment and appropriate caution. Then after all that, they get turned into pigs with their daughter being forced to undergo stressful, life threatening effects, to try and save them as well as herself. She works hard labor, is almost drowned, watches a friend nearly die, gets chased by a spirit trying to get her to slip up and be eaten, then goes on a train ride keeping her companions in check, to bargain a witch for her friends life. Finally she has to figure out her parents aren't among a bunch of identical pigs (idk how she knew) and after all her hardwork, her parents are still annoying and idiotic, while she went through so much to save their hides. I know it's meant to be a wholesome story of growth as a child matures, based on the creator and this could just be my western centric mindset culturally speaking, but those parents actions would warrant a CPS visit at minimum here in the US lmao😂, at least nowadays. The movie did come out a while back and maybe Japanese children are given more trust and responsibility at younger ages than we are, but idk it just was kinda off putting to see them treat her like that. People say before her adventure, she was a bratty child but wtf could anyone mean by that?! Where does she act bratty? Anxious maybe, but moving is a major change for kids regardless of what her silly mother said, and Chihiro only exhibited age appropriate behavior in my opinion. Plus, I would be upset and anxious if my parents were so irresponsible and idiotic. She is a child, and children are not the constantly pleasant, passive, obedient little creatures if that's what people expect. Personally, I love fanfics and fandmade projects that depict Chihiro returning to the spirit world permanently as she finds she no longer belongs in the human realm and misses the spirit world. Or better yet, she decides to stay after her parents are returned because she gets tired of being the only one in her family with a shred of common sense.
I agree with everything you wrote! There’s a show on Netflix called Old Enough that shows little kids (some as young as 3 or 4 years old!) running simple errands for their parents. Like picking up noodles at a grocery store. They go alone and everything! Completely different than parenting in the US. Although, Chihiro’s parents were just laughably gullible. 😂 I certainly don’t see Chihiro as bratty either. Literally everything around her is changing in the blink of an eye! Sigh, I haven’t consumed any fics in so long, but now in the mood to read some lovely ones about Chihiro and Haku reuniting. The movie never fails to make me cry a little, and long for a home I can never return to. Are there any stories you’d recommend?
Okay. This is shocking reaction! One of the best Studio Ghilbi films of all time! Ponyo, Kiki' Delivery Service, Grave of the Fireflies or Howl's Moving Castle next...?
I think a few weeks have passed. There are a lot of plant growth. The parents will be shocked to see the date on a newspaper and probably a missing persons report.
Love Spirited Away. Hayao Miyazaki is the Best. Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind to name a few. Ronja the Robber's Daughter is made by his son.
Haku is Chihiro's older brother, who died rescuing Chihiro from drowning in a river when they were young, and he became a river spirit known as the Kohaku River. Additionally, this movie depicts the sex industry as an underlying storyline. It's a movie with very profound themes.
I've seen every Ghibli film, I love them... But I got this funny story. I’ve tried to watch Nausica of the wind about eight times and everytime I would fall asleep 5 to 10 mins in. It was like hypnosis or something because I am not one to fall alseep during films. There's something about that one that knocks me out everytime 😂 I did finally get a chance to finish it after my 9th try, but it was hilarious trying to watch it so many times and saying "this time I will finish it....zzzzzzzz"😂
21:14 This woman is a fox spirit. She is an animal spirit, except for Chihiro. The reason they take on human form is because human form is easier and more convenient for them to move about in their work.
All Studio Ghibli movies are good. But if you want to compare and contrast, Princess Mononoke has to be next. Then you'll have a good grasp of how different their movies can be. After that, go nuts. Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, they're all wonderful.

in a commentary Miazaki said he was part of a group to clean a gunked up stream, they found a bike stuck like in it and when they used a rope to pull out out it took a lot of trash with it, the water was able to flow again. that was the inspiration for the river spirit scene.
Buddy, every hand animated art is a masterpiece, not many ppl will agree or enjoy, but this film, this was the first film that got me into anime
Absolutely! As someone who doesn't particularly care for anime, I love this movie.

Lin is also the same VA as Meg from Hercules.
Oh, and she also played Samara in the Ring movies! 😮 Just found that out this morning!

3:08
The small stone house is usually dedicated to a god who protects children.

Damn, Spongebob, Ed Edd n Eddy, Walking Dead, and Ghibli movies? Now that's what I call variety
Also The Spectacular Spiderman, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and the One Piece live action all in one react.

Oh Lin isn't human. She's a spirit like Haku. I don't know if it's been confirmed or not but many believe she's a Fox Spirit disguised as a human.
I found a site with informations about Ghibli movies (it's in french) where it's confirmed that the women aren't humans but nothing about that possibility for Lin

@@Makkaru112 it didn't look like a fan site
The spirits are not dead people but nature spirits. There’s a traditional belief in Japan called Shinto .
@@clairelin0216I agree. Im just giving the basics with some added folklore to help the reactors realize just how deep this stuff is haha ❤️

Lin is a transformed fox spirit, not a human - Just like how Haku has a human form and a dragon form.
I remember used to watch spirited away on Cartoon Network
Yeah more than a decade ago Cartoon Network had a Hayao Miyazaki week. That played most of his movies. They started at 8pm.
Especially one with a name.
Everything here is full of Japanese culture and mythology & also connected to the Japanese mentality and sensibilities.
Might I recommend “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Ponyo”
And Princess Mononoke

16:15 something. I never thought of tell years and many watches later. Maybe everything is super fragile and aged because spirits don’t put force or weight on things unless they want too. So those steps yeah probably would break the first “person” to walk in it.

Which is why even every object as a fork or chopsticks are treated with care and respect, for if they aren't they become negative versions of Yōkai which also puts bad luck upon the familt or the specific family member, thr opposite happens if treated well.

According to Miyazaki-sensei, Chihiro and Haku will reunite.... in the afterlife.
He reunited with her when she was older in highschool. There are some epic inuyasha level quality art where she’s at a sort of shrine type of thing and he’s older and taller as well and wearing some type of kimono similar to a priest and he’s hovering down towards her from overtop of of a few feet away from her.
