Sarah's beloved boy Haku was voiced by Haikyuu's Suga when he was young.
    Spoiler alert
The scene where Chihiro is crying and eating rice balls is the same animator who was in charge of the scene in Haikyuu where everyone cried and ate in the cafeteria when Karasuno lost in the battle against Aoba Josai.

In Japan, there is an old tradition that if you eat food from another world, you will not be able to return to this world, so Chihiro's parents broke this taboo.

I heard that it was also a thing in Angola, but it was that you shouldn't eat food if offered to you in a dream. That's also the tea of forgetfulness that you have to drink to pass on the next life in all my Chineses fantasy dramas haha It's such a repeated thing in so many different cultures that I am starting to believe in it lol

Predicting that the "stink spirit" was cursed by "someone" is very ironic once you realize that the "someone" is us. That is, modern industrial society that dumps junk in rivers, as this stinky blob is a river spirit that we have polluted with all that garbage. (Note a similar garbage scene in the ocean in another Ghibli movie, "Ponyo"). Remember, Miyazaki is very concerned about two things: flying and environmentalism. Here we see his concern for environmentalism on full display. I won't mention any more spoilers, but there is at one more commentary on our harm to the natural resources and the environment in the big reveal near the end of the movie where we learn why Haku remembers Chihiro's name and who Haku really is. Can't wait to see your reaction to it.

Late to this reaction but the spirited away characters show up all over the place out of context, it's kind of like recognising ghibli's totoro even if you've never seen my neighbour totoro! so considering how well traveled you guys are and that sarah likes anime to begin with, it's totally expected for you to recognise a lot of the characters here 😂❤

Aaah such a lovely video to wake up to!! Spirited Away is a masterpiece and one of my all-time favorite movies from childhood. The music alone is absolutely incredible. Thank you guys lots for reacting to it!
A small thing, but the subtitles where Haku tells Chihiro to demand a job from Kamaji are wrong; he was talking about getting a job from Yubaba from the start (and Kamaji himself said that everyone needs to sign a contract with her anyway).

    Fun facts from Japan🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
When crossing the bridge with Haku at night, most people notice that "They looks like a frog," to the astonishment of the employees. Most Japanese people noticed that when Haku crosses the bridge at night with a human, the employees are astonished and startled, and they make a commotion. When Lin and the newt are fighting in front of the elevator, most Japanese people think, "Oh, yes, I knew it. They are frogs incarnate. Even small children are not so surprised that they eat humans.
Because frogs often eat their lizard friends.
From a Japanese point of view, the reactions in this video are very fresh and unusual.
Children are familiar with typical Japanese monsters from Japanese folktales told by their parents, grandparents, and nursery school teachers at nursery schools, kindergartens, and at home.
Therefore, Japanese children don't feel much discomfort and accept their existence very naturally, saying, "If they grow up to be the same size as humans, they will probably eat humans, who are a mass of fat, because they are carnivores and omnivores. They are carnivores and omnivores, so they will probably eat humans.
At the same time, the Japanese people realize that this is a "hot spring resort where all the spirits of Japan gather" when they see the passengers of the boat coming across the river from the lighted station and the guests gathered at this hot spring resort.
Japan is a polytheistic country, so there are spirits of various foods and creatures.
There is also the spirit of commodities.
For example, the one who entered the elevator with Chihiro is Oshira sama (white god), who has been worshipped in the northeastern region of Japan for a long time.
He is the spirit of radish, a vegetable, and protects agriculture, horses, people's houses and eyes. He is also a kind of grandfather-like spirit who loves children, playing with them and babysitting them while the family concentrates on farm work, and is very trusted by people because of his calm and serene personality.
Looking at the behavior of this child-loving and gentle sprit, it is clear that he immediately realizes that Chihiro is lost when she sees a child who should be in the human world, alone and separated from her parents, being accompanied by an employee who is a frog incarnate, walking around the inn.
This sprit thought, "I am not the owner of this place, so as a guest I will respect and follow the policies and rules of this inn. But I want to help her to the best of my ability." He was so concerned about Chihiro that he followed her.
The group of guests that the frog-incarnated employee was showing to the room are not spirits but a kind of monsters that visit human villages during New Year's, called Namahage (Those who peel off the skin of a living person.).
Although the name sounds noisy, it is actually a monster that comes on New Year's Eve to celebrate the health and growth of children during the year.
On New Year's Eve, they come to the farm with their friends, sickles and hoes in their hands, dressed in winter clothes, and loudly ask, "Are there any children who have cried a lot, or who have done something bad during the year (teasing, lying, etc.)? and "Any adults neglecting their jobs, chores, or childcare?" and "Are there any adults who are neglecting their work, housework, or childcare?
If there's a bad kid who likes to be lazy, or a liar, or a tease, or violent, we'll peel their skin off.
    Namahage exclaims.
The children are often startled by their sudden arrival and begin to cry, but the Japanese parents stand firmly in front of them and say, "I have been a good boy or girl for a year. They are urged by their Japanese parents to say, "I have been a good boy or girl for a year.
Namahage then stops screaming, praises the children for their courage and politeness, pats them on the head, and gives them a hug.
And to this monster who watches over the health of families and the growth of their children, The adults in the house said, "As a parent, I am happy to see proof that my child is growing up to be an honest and courageous child. Until now, this child was very young and cried because you looked scary to her, but she answered your questions by herself and now she knows what kind of feelings you really have and what creatures you are thinking about.
It was a very lovely and wonderful sight. Thank you for visiting our home this year. I hope we can be friends again in the New Year." The first tea party of the New Year will be held.
Then, after tea and snacks at each home, they greet the residents with New Year's greetings and say, "We will come back next year to check on you, children, and all of you be good. Children, be good. Do not worry or annoy your parents, grandparents, or teachers. Be careful not to get into fights with your friends and siblings, and be careful not to get hurt. Your children are like treasures to their parents. This is our request from Namahage to you.I hope the new year will be honest and healthy, both physically and emotionally.
Namahage says so calmly to the human children.
And then they leave for the mountains or the sea.
This is a well-known monster in Japan that has such a role.
In Japan, since ancient times, the employees of the inn and the sprits and monsters who appear as guests have all had their own lives and roles, and are considered to be neighbors who live together with us Japanese in this island nation.
The Japanese believe that not only human beings, but all living creatures have their own feelings, thoughts, and reasons for living.
1:21:53 In Japan, this is a daily routine as school students traditionally clean their classes after the end of the day's classes, from kindergarten to high school.
In fact, Japanese children smile and say, "It's a race in each area to see who can wipe the floor, clean the windows, and sweep the garbage the fastest today!" or "I learned from my father, mother, and grandparents that there are many ways to make the cleaning process even cleaner. They enjoy daily cleaning while chatting with each other.
This is not a job for teachers or cleaners, but an important time for children to practice in the hope that they will be able to clean their own rooms and work desks in the future, no matter what life brings.
The university is too big, so cleaners clean everywhere, but the overwhelming majority of students are basically careful not to drop trash, stain desks and walls, or break anything, and during athletic events, cultural festivals, and performances, students clean up all the trash themselves instead of having cleaners work, and they still wipe the floors and They also wipe the floors and windows.
If a child leaves it to a teacher, parent, or janitor to clean a place they have rented to enjoy an event or a classroom they share, they would be considered very unmannerly in Japan and would be surprised that this poor child was not taught any manners by the adults around him or her when he or she was a child. They would be surprised.
In Japan, it is believed that children who are reluctant to practice cleaning from a young age lack self-control and a spirit of service, and will become adults who are poor at communicating with others and have very little patience.
In Japan, this level of cleaning is normal not only in inns but also in companies and homes.
This is one of the scenes that tells the audience that Chihiro is a child who grew up quite spoiled by her parents, including the scene in which she is repeatedly warned by Lin about various things.

Was brought here after watching your Haikyuu reactions! Love that you two are doing a reaction to Spirited Away for Halloween. It's one of my favourite Studio Ghibli films.
It's not surprising if you recognize the characters in this movie. The movie itself is critically acclaimed and has won academy awards for best animated film when it came out. A lot of the characters have memorabilia, merch and references in pop culture, so it isn't surprising if you've seen them lying around somewhere.
I'm not sure if you've figured it out yet, but the 'stink spirit' is actually the spirit of a really old, large river (assumed by the fact that Yubaba treats him with lots of respect as a paying customer) and its gotten dirty/'cursed' by the amount of filth and garbage that gets dumped into it. In Japanese folklore a lot of the gods and spirits are generally personifications of something - like the white radish spirit that helped Chihiro at the beginning. Also, while Lin looks very human, she's not, though I can't remember what specific kind of spirit she is.

Sarah, Ghibli movies are extremely popular, you could have seen some of the very iconic characters even at your mall or supermarket sometimes, like a limited time event something, or on the internet, especially, that you are more and more involved with animes. The guy in the black with the facemask is one of the most iconic figure from this film, and you probably would know some others as well from other Ghibli movies, because they are indeed everywhere, even if you did not hear where are they from! I cannot wait for the part two, ALSO ALSO ALSO, Sarah, Adam, if you are enjoying watching anime movies time to time, like for Halloween, or for Christmas maybe, or something like that, I would recommend you to watch YOUR NAME next time, which is a fairly new anime movie, but just as good as this one! Also, there is a movie called Silent Voice or Wanna Eat your Pancreas, that are also very good. I'm sure others will recommend other Ghibli movies as well. I hope we can see it sometime, as the both of you enjoying something like this. (Especially if it is this lenghty, I love long videos. :P)

In Japanese Shintoism, each beautiful and majestic natural feature such as rivers, waterfalls, mountains, oceans, large rocks, and large trees are believed to be inhabited by gods.
The spirit that Sen saved took the form of an old man's mask. Used in the traditional ancient Japanese performance of Noh, it is often a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, dignity, and compassion.
The identity of the stinky spirit is that of an ancient and majestic deity, and also that of a part of nature that has been polluted with trash by people who have forgotten to respect it.

18:28 hey I’m from china and feel responsible for correcting that Zhejiang province is actually coastal(well the city you were staying in may not, province is quite a large district and Zhejiang is approximately the size of South Korea ), and Zhejiang is south to Shanghai (very close tho). I’m a huge fan of your channel ❤❤can’t wait to see more

This movie is based on the mythology of Tokoyo, which is on the same plane as our world and the gods/spirits that govern nature go to this place to take a break, because with the spirits they explained how it worked.
It is very complex and many things are based on the director's own experience, for example, when he was young he went with his community to clean a river and among other things he took a bicycle out of the mud, from people's garbage or maybe it was later of a flood, I don't remember the anecdote well but it reflects the scene in the movie

This movie IS iconic so there's gifsets and merchandise and references alllllll over the place. Even in western animation but especially in anime. Not to mention that these characters themselves are also based off of Japanese mythology so even if you hadn't seen these ones in particular, you've probably seen the things they're based off of, and/or seen other things based off those same things lol.

It's one of my favorite anime also i love My neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and When Marnie was here.
People throw their trash in the forest and that's why forest spirit become so dirty and stinky. Those ducks and other personages are from Japan's ghost (yokai) folklore, so you can see them everywhere. Ghibli created many beautiful anime, music is beautiful too

Yes, in Pinocchio all the boys on Pleasure Island turn into donkeys eventually after they've spent enough time acting like greedy asses and then they get sold to do labor. Pinocchio escapes with just his ears having turned.
