So interesting because I’m from Beijing and trying to explain to my American husband the difference between “standard Mandarin accent” and the “Beijing accent” this video made me realize the habits I never noticed I had

All the videos on the Beijing accent are so helpful! That's all my in-laws speak, and it threw me off for so long I didn't even realize there was this accent that was so different than standard Mandarin. Until I found this channel and wow, it all makes sense now, thanks Fan Laoshi!

Yeah, this is literally the most helpful Chinese video I’ve ever seen on UA-cam (and I’ve watched.....a lot). Bookmarking this and I will rewatch over and over. Thank you!!
I’ve watched so many movies or tv shows where the sound is very clearly changed from standard Mandarin, and there are very few resources explaining this, especially the thing about removing the initial of the second syllable. Having a teacher just say “yeah, we do this” is so helpful.
    比如,在这个电影《少年的你》有个人叫 Hu Xiaodie。但是呢,周冬雨说的时候她听起来像 ”Hu Yiaodie”之类的。我在看的时候好困惑!现在明白了。
    谢谢老师!

    • @RitaChinese

Wow you have really good ears, Robert! Yeah definitely, Chinese teachers also need to listen to how we REALLY speak more carefully haha. I also explained more sound change like j/q/x-i in the other Beijing accent video: ua-cam.com/video/4xcZAIGr77s/v-deo.html Enjoy😄🙌

Love it! Find dialects so fascinating! I didn't have many friends from Beijing in Sichuan, but had a few and it was always a quite challenging! But not so bad either, especially when one is already used to not so standard putonghua.I feel that Sichuanhua has quite a lot of erhua too... (I guess it makes sense since it belongs to the northern dialects...)

THANK You for helping explain to my Mandarin-speaking Cantonese friend what the hell I was talking about! She's mostly ABC, but actually born in GuongDong, so the Mandarin she knows was learned in (Chinatown) Boston, MA, USA. While at home, Guongdong Hua (like your husband/bf) She can't hear the difference in Mandarin and doesn't even know what a tone is even though she uses them correctly in Cantonese (6 tones, 9 sounds) and Mandarin all the time, perfectly.

Hey, your videos are awesome, I've been liking them all, lots of valuable content about 北方话和北京话。 I'm wondering if you can settle an item of confusion for me, when adding 儿化 to a word ending in -ng, such as 明儿 or 瓶儿, is the R-colouring slightly nasalized? I swear I sometimes hear it and other times don't, depending on the speaker. Perhaps it's a regional thing, as I hear even within different parts of Beijing, 儿化 usage varies. Anyway, thank you for the great content!
