What is going on my dang mates, I hope you have all been well. Today we'll be talking about Citizen a rock band from Toldeo, OH signed to Run For Cover Records | Citizen released Youth in 2013 via Run For Cover Records before embarking on their first Warped Tour. For me, Youth by Citizen is a perfect album but I know that no piece of music is able to be absolutely perfect as all art is subjective.
Mat Kerekes has an incredible voice that really shines through on Youth. I enjoy his passionate delivery and occasional yelled vocals.
Citizen has also released some other great works via Run For Cover Records such as: Young States, Everybody Is Going To Heaven, and As You Please.
I can't wait to see what they do next.

The transition from the end of Sleep into How Does It Feel? is one of my favorite moments ever in music. If I could describe how the dark days of my Junior and Senior years of high school felt, it would be the end of Sleep.
The Night I Drove Alone was the song that defined that Summer for me. Amazing songs made up an amazing album.

“Figure You Out” has always been my favorite track on this record however I would daresay that “Everybody Is Going To Heaven” is their best record
I love EIGTH, but I feel like that was the record they made when they were trying to find themselves, then founf themselves on As You Please

About time this sort of video came out - Youth was an artistic achievement that knew exactly what it wanted to be; right up there with Colourmeinkindness and Floral Green.
The whole early 2010s Grunge-revival ‘subscene’ was so promising.
Jay Mazella I agree so heavy. Also, Daylight/Superheaven was lit
Loooove Floral Green. That album is hella underrated.
Discovered the album last year. 9 years later, and it is still a staple in people discovering new sounds.
“Citizen isn’t a band you grow out of. They’re a band that grows with you”- heard that somewhere and man is it true.
Mat Kerekes could so easily be one of the biggest artists today. His new solo songs cross so many genres and they hit so well. His album "Luna and the wild blue everything" is a perfect solo album
Youth is perfect. Peripheral Vision is also a perfect album!
YOUTH will always be the anthem of my 2013 summer. The best of Citizen.
Ive only known citizen for about a year but they are 1 of my favourite bands. For me though as you please is almost as good as youth so many good songs on both albums though. Once again great vid nate

One of the greatest records written, atleast within the realm of emo/grunge/hardcore of the last 2 decades. Solid throughout, seamless listening experience. Every song fits so well and has their own energy. It hits different 10 years later
Citizen is definetly my favourite band and Youth is my favourite album. So much love, passion and energy put into it. Thank you for doing this vid. Keep it up man

The Things We Think We're Missing came out the same year and took a lot of the shine off this album because it sounded like the album Youth was trying to be, but was way more successful at it. I still love Youth though and glad to be reminded of it whenever it gets brought up

I got my first tattoo when I was 21. Youth recently came out, and my tattoo artist was jamming out to the record while tattooing me. I asked him who the band was, and he, by telling me, changed my life. This memory will always reside in my brain pleasantly.
I like youth but personally I feel Citizen is a band that has improved on every album since, As you please is the their masterpiece in my opinion.

im so glad you mentioned the thing about pop punk that it’s not much of a genre, because citizen and seahaven are two of my favorite bands but i was never able to find any band that’s even similar to them in the pop punk genre

i remember i found Citizen just exactly when Youth dropped, i was heading to my freshman year of hs and all throughout hs (just graduated last month), i listened to Youth and the rest of their music everyday lol
I've been listening to The Night I Drove Alone almost constantly for the past week so finding this is pretty dope
I think one of the things that helped Citizen is that they had a very similar trajectory and maturity as Brand New. Their early demos are very Pop-Punk and immature (not necessarily in a bad way at all) and when they started maturing and expanding their sounds - they only got better. Youth is Citizen’s The Devil and God and EIGTH is like their Daisy in a way. Both records are phenomenal.
RIP Balance and Composure. Their last album deserved more credit
They're back
Man when you said citizen at warped tour 2013 that literally bought chills down my spine. I remember seeing them that same warped tour (my first one in fact). It was the end of the day and surprisingly a lot of people left the grounds but everyone who was still there was there to catch citizen’s set. The bands playing and crew and volunteers came to watch citizen. Literally everyone was vibing. After jumping with kids we were just swaying as a crowd in the noise gaze of citizen. And then we go hard for the summer and the night I drove alone. Man Overboard was my favorite band at the time but god damn even after watching ManO’s set for that tour, citizen left us with something we wouldn’t forget. Never felt more welcomed than with crowd. Thank you citizen (and will yip of course for producing a lot of my favorite artists) for giving us unforgettable records, looking forward to the new one.
it's crazy how different mat's stage presence used to be
Its funny that you coupled Seahaven and Balance & Composure. Me and my buddy spoke with Kyle Soto in 2016 after a show and spoke about balance and how they're in a similar genre. He and the band said they'd never heard of them.
Seahaven went on tour with Balance in like 2013....bunch of liars.

Dude… I remember when this album dropped, I used to bike to work late at night blasting this on full volume. Then I got my first car, had an incredible summer with my friends and I fully remember moving past the girl that kept turning me down. Memories.
Youth is something Matt wrote during his teens, where most of the things that most teens worry about are heartbreaks, getting out of a gloomy and mundane town, etc. As You Please is comparable to Youth in the sense that it is a step above in terms of nuance in their lyrics and depth of the band's and members' personality. Their recent songs are softer imo but if you follow even one of the band members, specifically Mat, you can see their music change along with their personal life. In Youth, I saw it as Mat being in a bad place in his life. As You Please is still in a similar but is viewed through a more mature lens and thinks beyond the now and goes further into the what-ifs of life. Their new
Everybody is Going to Heaven is just as good as Youth if not even better. Change my mind.

When anyone asks me what I think a perfect album is ‘Youth’ is always the first album that comes to mind. ‘Speaking with a Ghost’ is just my anthem.

I still remember the night I heard Roam The Room for the first time ever I was literally shook at how simple yet fucking amazing this band was. Youths definitely an album for the books. One of , if not the best album from its
time.
I listened to this album for the first time back in 2015, same year I was going through a really, really bad break up, dealing with my grandad's passing, being diagnosed with an eating disorder and dropping out of college for a semester because I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Needless to say, I was extremely deppressed. This album was everything I wanted to listen to every single day, and it was honestly the one thing that somehow kept me together when everything else seemed to be falling apart. 4 years later and each song still hits me the same way. It will forever be one of my all time favorite albums for sure. Also, I was the same age Mat was when it came out, so it just makes it extra special to me.
I am so excited with the direction your channel is going. These videos are so cool, it's not as much a review or why someone should listen to it, but why they are special and why they matter to you, which is so much more interesting. The editing and clips you use are so well put together!

This is one of the most criminally under rated albums of all time. My fiance fell in love with them at the same time as i did, so this is kinda like our album. And having her sing every word with me in my car was when i started falling in love with her.
Why aren't there people around me who listen to music like this??? Listend to then since YOUTH 5 years ago. Such a masterpiece. Can you talk (or do you even listen?) about band like Touche amore, la dispute and counterparts? They are amazing too!

I was listening to this album 2 years ago when my abusive dad kicked my door in and then proceeded to smash my acoustic guitar in front of me. Life is a fucking trip. I can never get sick of this album doe. Thank god for Citizen.

I’ve always had similar thoughts about these bands. I knew all of them but even though they were divergent in many ways, they also were all associated acts and often friends with each other. Great bands and great album. I love their later albums too.
I saw them live in Saint Louis almost a year ago. I talked with the guitarist about what gear what he was using, he was super chill and down to earth. Awesome video as usual 👌🔥

I always viewed citizen and movements like the same genre, they both have very unique sounds and keep you on the toes, a lot of people think both are pop punk.
This album is absolutely incredible and so is the band. I even got the album title tatted on me.

Also mat was going to quit the band after youths release the only thing that made him want to stay was the crowd at warped tour singing the words to ( I dont remember the single the album wasnt out at that point yet)
