- Summer Death is a Modern Emo Masterpiece
-----------------------------------------------------
What is going on my mates, hope you have all been doing well. Today we'll be talking about Summer Death, the incredible debut from Marietta, an emo/indie rock/pop punk outfit from Philadelphia.
Marietta hasn't been together for the better part of five years now, but their contributions to modern emo live on. Summer Death and As It Were are some of the most fun, expansive, and emotionally-compelling works that the emo revival had to offer.
I hope you enjoy this video about one of my favorite albums of all time, I really tried to slow it down with this one and attempt to give this band the justice they truly deserve.
Fav tracks: deck wine, cinco de mayo, you've got the map backwards, matt
Least tracks: they all rule, chief

What band should I do a vid on next?
Nate The Mate if you haven’t done PUP yet I’d love a video on them or their new album. Jeff Rosenstock would be great too!
@@i2HClan truth! both are fantastic artists
SYLVIA.
I'm surprised you havent done something on Lil Peep yet. He perpetuated and reinvigorared the emo genre in a completely new way. His story of being homelesd to making it pretty big is also incredible on its own.
Prince Daddy is one band I'm really into
“And like any good emo band, they’re no longer together” ☹️
it's true tho :/
Fucking truth
at least nobody was accused of sexual harrasment like other emo bands
i came here to make sure this comment was here
Hurts
no nate, *you’re* a modern emo masterpiece
you're gonna make me cry and I'm crying already

For the kids who will see this video in ten years: I had the privilege of seeing them with The World Is... and You Blew It in 2014. Peak emo revival! & I got to interview them for my college radio station. They trolled all of my questions hard.
Marc Blanc whenever, if ever is a masterpiece!!! I did a top 10 emo Albums of the Decade vid, and that was my #1 pick for 2013. Much love Marc, hope you have a great one!
@@NateTheMateForever Thanks Nate! Keep up the good work.
Well I’m about 3 years late to this video lol. Only recently got into Revival stuff and emo in general.
do u have the interview saved? it would be so awesome to hear it!
I thank couples therapy for my introduction and I thank summer death for my stay.
good way to put it
Same
And I thank "As It Were" for helping me learn to let go.
God bless Eric Taylor literally makes me not want to drink after listening to it. Anyone else feel that way?
Really? Every time I listen to it I just wanna get drunk af with my friends and get that sour feeling of the hangover.
@@nikone96 same lol
can I just say this channel has introduced me to a world of emo I never knew existed and regret missing out on it when it was all fresh and new
Kafei Mewtwo really? That’s awesome thank you my mate
@@NateTheMateForever I mean right now I'm listening to Dikembe for the first time because of one of your vids and its just amazing how much music you know about and can find.
@@kafeimewtwo2410 better to find it now then never find em.
I am 33 years old. And I still listen a lot this album every year. It's a life savior and a celebration of life.
grohl51 that’s outstanding
marietta solidified their spot as one of my favorite emo bands whenever i noticed the sound of a car idling during the bridge of cinco de mayo shitshow. such a small detail, but is super effective in putting you in the shoes of the narrator and evoking the emotions associated with late night car conversations. so fucking cool.
wack jagner small details >
I'm not sure if I'm remembering it right, but I'm pretty sure it's actually a washing machine bc I remember reading somewhere that some of either the vocals or guitars or possibly both were recorded in a laundry room
@@lolmapscone interesting, if that’s the case i respect them just as much but in a much more diy or die type of way
i was obsessed with this band/album for wayyy too long. i can remember telling people about them & feeling uncomfortably upset when they didnt love them as well
*SO, HOW LONG IS FOUR YEARS? IT'S AN ETERNITY I SUPPOSE.* Holy shite never crossed my mind that anybody on earth would make a video on my favourite album of my favourite band ever. A zillion respects for you Nate!
seeing this 4 years in the future hope you’re doing well random commenter
just got back from the discomfort - I'm alright is a modern emo masterpiece
It's so unique and strangely perfect. It's the conclusion and culmination of emo as a genre
The Philly/philly suburb emo scene was so amazing from 2011-2017 man
Marietta is the band that got me into emo music and this album is such a banger imo
I have cystic fibrosis! I have a huge new found respect for Marietta, and I'm gonna go listen to summer death in its full
cheers, Patrick! stay strong mate, I hope you have a great rest of your night
Hey man I have it too! Just had a lung transplant a few months ago. These guys are great
i never knew they donated to the cystic fibrosis foundation. that's so awesome! sadly my cousin passed away from cystic fibrosis after a double lung transplant. best the luck to you Brad!
I read the title of the video and I was like "100% correct". Anyways, great vid as usual mate. Gotta love Marietta.
thank you mate, have a dang great night
Aww finally someone talking about Marietta!! Love them so much🥺💖
Monica Nokes they make me cry
Nate The Mate I felt that. Awesome video man keep up the great work!
You didn't have to remind me that my favorite band ever isn't together anymore. But for anyone that isn't aware our Marietta boys are still making tunes in a band called Narra.
And then they stopped also Narra just isn't as good as marietta imo
Yeah, Narra was not good.
@@ElJules33 trippin. 22 goes
I know them from that "songs for a girl who forgot I exist" mix but I think I should probably dig in on Marietta... wish me luck mates ✌️
you got this mate
I was never given a name Best emo playlist on my opinion
this is one of my favourite youtube videos ever. thank you
Philly native here. I was always late to the party for everything, this band included. I found them like 6 months ago and i feel everything you described, it was all very well worded. Anxiety is a bitch, but screaming Marietta's lyrics helps a bit :) great vid mate !
Kaonashi much love mate, anxiety sucks, but people can always make it bearable ❤️
ANDYYYYYYYYY THE HIGHWAY LOOKED SO DARK WHEN THE BLACK TOOK CONTROL OF MY EYES. good Lord I found like 6 copies of the split at Waterloo and snagged em

@@NateTheMateForever yessir!
The test press of this album I somehow got my hands on is legit one of my most prized possessions.
hey, nate. as another human with (sometimes) crippling anxiety, i completely understand how you feel. we'll be okay, though
carolinelizabeth thank you, Caroline. This made me very happy to see, I hope you have a great Friday!
A couple of the members are in a band called "Narra" if anyones interested
Eric .Doering pretty sure they defunct now :/
@@NateTheMateForever ah bummer
Narra made one album, but my God is it good
I’ve watched a few of your videos over the last few days and realized that I’m in the background of a ton clips you use when covering all these philly bands
2013-2014 I found them; and they honestly changed my life.
There’s not a band I find myself coming back to more than a decade later.
I love them and I always will.
Thanks for recognizing this record with a dedicated video. Listen to Shag Lab on February 7th. Its gonna blow up
thank you caleb
@@NateTheMateForever no problem guy. DIY needs more people like you exposing the scene and helping others to understand its nostalgia and relevance.
Yes, the first time I heard Cinco de mayo shit show, Im bawling trying to remember shit on my past. But the song alone is a total nostalgia. God I hope they reunite
One of my favorite albums ever! I can remember when this came out one of t(my best friends) the first person I met when I moved to Philly was friends with them showed me them. Sadly, many people didn't find their music till the stopped playing and the friend past away in March this year. So this album will always hold a place close to my heart.
Listened to all of Summer Death for the first time tonight, and damn...after dealing with most painful heartbreak and being traumatized by the worst summer of my entire life it was something I needed. I found them on complete accident on some Midwest emo mixtape and I don’t regret it. In the few months of my worst mental health of my entire life, they really connected with me. They really did something I needed. I’ve been in so much pain lately and they just spoke to me the way nothing else had all summer. God bless Marietta, and even if the things I’ve been through have caused me to no longer believe there is a god anymore.
FINALLY A VID ABT MY FAV BAND
The Smell Of Pine Trees very happy that you’re happy my mate!
@@NateTheMateForever really appreciate the vids you put out. they introduced me to a ton of bands, and helped me understand a few better. keep it up mate!
i have a deep appreciation for this band. listening their music is like writing a love letter to my best friends.
i like this analogy
this just randomly stumbled in my recommended and I couldn't be more satisfied. Liked & subscribed!
Daymien Bourrie this made me so happy! Thank you
my favorite band of all time watching this literally made me cry and i havent cried in years just the thought of someone loving this project as much as i do
God I’ve been looking for a vid like this for so long
thank you for putting me on yet another great band nate 💛
Nate your videos mean a lot to me, they're well done and inspirational. They remind me to find beauty in music, life, and even the daily drudgery of work and study. I hope one day I can love something as much as you seem to love the music you listen to.
Spencer Sundstrom this has me all torn up, thank you so much Spencer
So blessed to have met and befriend Ben from Marietta! One of the greatest guys you could ever meet
I juuuuust became a huge fan. Same I knew it was familiar cuz of the modern baseball split and now I am obsessed. These went from a few guys I never knew existed.. to feeling like they've been my best friends my whole life. Favorite band now. Great video man, thank you, I was craving more content on them!!
Honestly Nate...you been killing it lately
Ryan Mendoza I love you Ryan, thank you so much 😭 this seriously made my day
Thank you so much for this video. I've been loving this album for years now but never took a step back to understand it for myself. This video made me think about it and now I think I really know why I was so attached to the album. I wrote the following about this album.
Growing up I dealt so much with the searching for purpose and meaning to my life. The fear of mortality and the thought that in the end none of this will have mattered. Never to get an answer to the question of why we exist except for in a few moments. The times where we said fuck it and lived in the moment. The times we didn't think about what would happens in the future or what happened in the past but instead lived only in the now. When consequence held no wait and baggage didn't bring precedent we felt alive. And that's what this album is about to me. Forget the stresses of living by being alive.
As a close friend once told me at 2 am trying to convince me to get into a car to just drive around "you don't remember the nights you stayed in". We live this life to make memories and most of those memories lie in the finer details of our commitments to just be alive.
Your discovery of Marietta was basically the same way I discovered them. This band got me into modern emo music and it still probably my favorite emo album
Marietta... Discovered them thanks to MoBo (which I discovered thanks to Shark?, because GTA V) and it was so shocking. Good God, the lyrics! They are so deep, like if they said the things you don't want (or can't) to say.
I also have anxiety issues and I remember wandering around the neighborhood riding my bike listening to the full album on and on and on... Sometimes, when anxiety was at the highest points, I used to go to a nearby church and pray. And I felt like "Fuck, Dantooine..." when they say "Get to the church light, I need to reaffirm with God that I'm non of his concern..." And when I attended a psychologist "leave me in therapy, maybe someday I'll be okay..." Marietta makes me remember all the things (and ways) I've felt in my life in a painful yet tender way, as if they remind me that, yeah, I'm not alone, I'm a human being and I'm allowed to feel bad and weird and that this will pass and I'll feel good again, fit for release...
Marietta has been part of my life and I am so happy it was that way.
Many thanks and lots of love from Lima, Peru.
Great video, really appreciate your complex analysis on Marietta and their whole Style, this band really kept me alive in a moment of despair and loneliness i had to deal with, hopefully i came across this band by watching those midwest emo mixtape videos and all off a sudden i was singing in the loudest way that " COME WITH ME, I PROMISE THE WATER IS FINE, I NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO CONVINCE ME I WON'T DIE" and from then on my interest and addiction for midwest emo kept growing
Youre amazing on digging so deep on these bands, marietta is a really good Band!
pony up! in the background works so well
ive been watching your videos for a while, specifically ones on the bands i love and the way you explain things makes me think that all of emo rock is connnected
I want to thank you for reminding me that Marietta exists. I saw the post about this video incoming and I couldn't believe I had forgotten about a group that easily ranks in my top 5 bands. The way you said nostalgia doesn't come close to describing it fit perfectly. Keep up the good work and give Mom jeans some love soon please
Glad I got to see MoBo, Marietta, and Spraynard in the same show :-)
Nolan now THAT’S a show!
Nate The Mate yeah yeah, I get that luxury living near Philadelphia
i have been waiting for this for so long
Been listening to summer death nonstop this month, so glad to see this.
This is a really really great video, thank you so much for this very relatable and detailed analysis that this album deserves
the first couple times I listened to this album I would sneak outside and smoke a bowl on the porch swing at my parents house
Cringe
why is it cringe to have a memory surrounding music? that's a huge part of the fun for me. Whether it's remembering where I heard a song for the first time, where I bought a record, or where I was at in my life when an album came out.
I think Nate you should make all the midwest bands a video. They deserve recognition and some of them are rare. Some of them really don't care about money, but they broke up shortly after releasing an album.
incredible idea, Dean. I really like covering bands that clearly weren't in it for the money. To be clear, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to earn a living from music, but there's just something about an individual/group doing something purely out of love/expression.
I am to cover any/all types on music on here, but those artists that purely do it out of love will always be my favorite to talk about.
Still waiting on the sequel to this video that covers As It Were
this is my favorite channel on youtube
also i want a Marietta frizbee
oh marietta i discovered them like 2 or 3 weeks ago listening to american football in shuffle and i liked em (modern baseball tigers jaw and midwest pen pals also was in that shuffle playlist) and for my age (13 years old) music like pop punk, emo-pop, emo revival, midwest emo, 80s emocore, skramz, metalcore and post hardcore and that music is so good to a kid that has my age instead of that rap sex shit
THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO YET!!
I love Marietta. But my favorite song by them is actually Yeah Yeah Utah off of their spilt with MoBo.
i was listening to that song earlier today, so good haha
YES YES IT IS IS SO FUCKING IS THANK YOU SO MUCH IVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER BIG MUSIC UA-camR TALK ABOUT THEM THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hey man great video, just listened to this album on the way home from work and I liked it!
If you’re thinking of a band for your next video you should consider Spanish Love Songs. I listened to their new singles and they were hella catchy. But good lord do their lyrics give me the same anxiety about death. Just in emo anthem form.
My favorite band. They got me through the strangest time of my life, and I will love them forever for that
My good friend Ben Johnson was the bassist for them!
@@erikcapozzi2760 tell him I said thank you
OMG you uploaded this at the perfect time.

Thanks for this video !!
This is the first time I ever heard of this band , but I’m glad you introduced them to me !
After my first listen I am really enjoying this record !
They sound more math rock to me then emo , but that doesn’t matter .
I hear some Americans Football influences in there but either way it’s great stuff !!
Thank you !!!
I’ve found so many bands from you, including Marietta, and I can’t thank you enough. Do you think you’d wanna make a video on You, Fear, and Me by Souvenirs?
whoa... that's actually one of my favorite albums ever. I'm inherently biased though, bc I grew up going to the beach on linden ave that they sing about during my summer break with my family. If you ever get a chance to go to Carpinteria, California, you gotta check it out! Very small and quaint beach town.
Nate The Mate I definitely will man. I just got back from NAMM so I wasn’t able to go this time but next time I’m in Cali I’ll go. But I only heard about that album because of you and now it’s one of my favorites.
Oh boy you got me into mobo late last year here i go new band obsession
Nate dude i love your videos. Im old school emo i grew up on Brand New TBS, Thursday you know anyway thanks to your videos i get opened up to a lot of new bands. Bands that embody the spirit that all those previously listed bands once had. Just raw do it for the music emotions. Hope your anxiety gets better its a bitch. I hate the pharmaceuticals so i medicate more natural ways. Anyway thanks for the new bands.
i did the same thing. i wrote out all the lyrics to pink floyd's animals, in my high school days. that's was cool, brother.
Hell yea. I love this album.

Fuck, Dantooine Is Big has made me sob on multiple occasions just because of the fucking subject matter of the lyrics. Safe to say that this album has been the best record I’ve ever listened to.
I was at their last show. It was one of janks first shows.
THIS ALBUM WAS THERE FOR ME WHEN NOBODY WAS THANK YOU NATE
Yo don’t sleep on As It Were either. That album is equally as good as Summer Death but doesn’t get anywhere near the love it deserves.
