  • One of my viewers sent me a W2ENY microphone to try out. It is an affordable, and space saving desk microphone. He was especially interested in finding equalizer settings for the FTdx10 that will create good 2-way radio quality transmit audio, and he wanted to help others who might also be interested in this microphone. In this video, I show the process I used to set up, analyze, and test this microphone with the FTdx10.
Hint: The microphone is very light and doesn’t come with rubber feet. I added a stick-on tire weigh inside the mic and I added 4 stick-on rubber feet that I purchased at a Hamfest.

I read that the SD card in the dx10 only records the received audio, but I heard someone as they seemed to imply that if you have monitoring on, it'll record both sides of the audio (received and you on your mic). I'm a video production guy and I don't understand why radio manufacturers don't record both sides AND record each side to one side of a stereo audio file. That way, you can convert the stereo audio file to a dual mono and match the audio levels between the received audio and your mic audio easily.

The FTdx10 can record both sides of a QSO if you enable the Monitor. You will need to wear headphones to avoid audio feedback.
Ironically, the FTdx101D or MP cannot record the audio of a QSO. You can use external software, such as Audacity, and record the audio via the transceiver’s USB port. But the transceiver itself only allows you to record voice or CW messages that you can transmit, such as for calling CQ.

I bought one (just came in today's mail) as a sort of stopgap until I can repair the broken base of my Icom SM-20 that I got with my "new" IC-718. I found that I need to turn the compression on and the mic gain all the way up to get 30-40 watt peaks on my SWR/power meter with the radio set on full power. Maybe I just don't talk loudly enough. I know the radio puts out full power when I do a "whistle test" into a dummy load. I did get a good signal report earlier today so the mic DOES work.

There is something wrong if you had to turn the mic gain to full. The W2ENY mic is super sensitive. As you see in the video, I had to turn it way down. I never run the processor above 15%. Any higher and your audio can become nasty. I see that you are using an ICOM transceiver. They are different than Yaesu. Is your W2ENY a dynamic mic or an electret condenser type? In this video I’m using a Yaesu.

AF-FFT in these radios stands for Audio Frequency Fast Fourier Transform.

@kirkukserver watch my FTdx10 series. I explain all of that in the series. There are 94 videos.

Is the mic a dynamic or amplified? You mentioned a lot of room noise leading me to think it's not dynamic.

It has an electret element. The audio reports were good but people who have heard me with the PR-781 told me the PR-781 sounds better.

@@n4hnhradio Hard to tell without having it in my hands...but it looks like it would feel flimsy (or be delicate). I realize it's for saving space but I'd rather have something more substantial.

@allenpamscofield Yes, it’s so light that I opened it up and stuck lead weights in it to keep it from falling over so easily. It is a space-saving mic that sounds good. But it will not replace my PR-781.
