Big Thank you to Rich. He has the patience of Job. His emails to me were of great value.
I finally got WSJT fully functioning.
Here is what I found for anyone having similar issues to me.
    1) The internet time clock standard is a poor reference. (i.e) It is not accurate enough unless one wants to zero it every time you start the computer.
    I downloaded "Dimension 4"...Does a great job.
    2) Windows 7 has a oddity in that if one downloads the WSJT software to it's default location (C:/user/programs)...certain permissions and restrictions come into play; partially crippling the WSJT software.
One has to simply create a folder; (I called mine WSJT, and down load the executable file there before running the program.
Now, if someone can tell me how to run AClog and WSJT at the same time, I'd be tickled as they share the same com port on my computer.
I run just USB, no CiV.
    Thanks again to Rich.

      Hi Pete,
That is super you got it running. I did not know that about windows 7, so thank you for posting that tidbit of valuable information. It will certainly help someone.
Thanks again and best 73! I hope to hear you on the air!

I'm using a MacBook Pro and WSJT-X. All I have is a USB cable going from the computer to the 7300. I'm using MacLoggerDX that works Great! I did all the updating via the terminal on the computer as you show in your video. Is there something I need to do in the 7300's menu to get RF out? I can RX with no problems but I just can't get any RF out from the radio. Once I figure that out I'll be up and running on FT-8. Any idea's you can give me will be much appreciated so I can get on the AIR...
    Thanks - Tom

Hi, I have 2 questions, the Ci-v cable, what port is it plugged into on the back of the ic7300? And why do you operate the 7300 in split mode? Cheers Trevor ZL1UTH

    • @HamRadioAdventures
      @HamRadioAdventures  6 років тому +1

Hi Trevor, nice to hear from you and thanks for posting your question here. The CI-V plugs into the remote port on the back of the radio. It looks like a computer mic or speaker jack on the rear of the 7300. There's a long explanation why guys use split but the simple answer is that it keeps your tx signal in the sweet spot. Depending on the situation it'll make your signal better.
The long answer from WSJT-X User Guide: Split Operation: Significant advantages result from using Split
mode (separate VFOs for Rx and Tx) if your radio supports it. If it
does not, WSJT-X can emulate such behavior. Either method will
result in a cleaner transmitted signal, by keeping the Tx audio always
in the range 1500 to 2000 Hz so that audio harmonics cannot pass
through the Tx sideband filter. Select Rig to use the radio’s Split
mode, or Fake It to have WSJT-X adjust the VFO frequency as
needed, when T/R switching occurs. Choose None if you do not
      wish to use split operation.
Thanks again for commenting and best 73! de K0PIR.us

    Thanks for the video!
    A few questions:
I have all my settings duplicating yours using both cables. I do not show the 7300 option under configurations. Is this a matter of renaming after completing the settings? Using USB option I got an error msg upon rig test. It read: Hamlib error IO error while opening comm to rig. Changing to Comm 3 solved that.
How do you get the rig screen view to appear?
My Std Msgs has 2 signal reports, how do I delete one?
I downloaded and installed JT Alert and the associated files, attached it to WSJT but don't see it on the screen. What setting am i missing?

      @HamRadioAdventures  7 років тому

Hi and thank you for commenting. Those are good questions. Yes just rename the configuration.
I think the rig screen you are referring too is the Ham Radio Deluxe window. Are you using HRD?
For the std message, do you have two reports that you are sending? That is unusual. Or are you referring to the one sent and the one received? If that's the case those are correct.
Oh, when I dock JTAlert to the WSJT-X window it hides at the bottom or the top. I lose it if it's at the bottom. I have to move the WSJT-X window up on the screen.
I hope this helps, let m,e know. Best 73 and hope to hear you on. - Rich, K0PIR

      Yes HRD.
I see from the video how you have the HRD rig screen displayed. I thought it was docked to WSJT-X.
Found the JT Alert too! Now to get it setup.
My Generate Std Messages box shows two sig reports, one as -20 (for example) and the other as R -20, both send during a QSO.
I lost my audio voice which was working fine yesterday! Soundcard check is OK though.
Lastly I can not get auto logging to HRD. Any thoughts.?
      73 and Thanks!

Well, first of all, you don't need to use a CI-V cable with the 7300. You can both control the rig and work digital over the USB cable. The USB cable is all you need. Also, those having trouble with Hamlib...make sure you've downloaded and properly installed Hamlib. If you're using HRD, you don't need Hamlib...simply select "Ham Radio Deluxe" in WSJT-X.... de W4NNF.

      Hi Rod,
It's nice to hear from you. Thank you for commenting and I know just what you mean about the CI-V. I have a few videos using just a USB and also a couple on VSPE. My thought on CI-V, if it's there I want to use it. Later I may decide to disconnect it, but I don't think so.
Thank you for mentioning the info on Hamlib and HRD, well put. Have a great day and best 73 - Rich, K0PIR

You can edit the frequency that windows uses to update the internet time in regedit. I set mine to once a day (86400 seconds)from the default once a week. I found the instructions can be found on the Microsoft Windows community website. Be sure to read about how often you should update your time. You don't want to ping the time servers too often or you could get blocked.

Guess I have a lot more playing to do. Giving it up for tonight. I saw some decodes and now nothing? I'm assuming one positions the "U" shape over the signal to lock onto freq?
Also, any way to get rid of the annoying horizontal bars in the waterfall?

    • @HamRadioAdventures
      @HamRadioAdventures  7 років тому

Hi Pete, we don't have to use the "U" shape unless looking for a open spot in the waterfall to start transmitting or calling CQ. Your pane on the left will decode everything that shows up in your waterfall (about 200Hz to 2400Hz in the clip above)l, just stay on the correct FT8 freq. WSJT-X will do that for you. 14.074 is the default for 20 meters.
Yeah I don't think those horizontal time lines are an option, but I could be wrong :-)
You're close, just some fine tuning needed. I watched other guys operate on UA-cam before I jumped in. It'll come together. Thanks for commenting and adding value to this UA-cam channel. Best 73 and I hope to hear you on. - Rich, K0PIR

Well, guess I will need new help.
All of a sudden I can not get AC Log to work after playing with the WSJT software. I am getting all sorts of "no com port available" etc....Completely unable to QSY when clicking on spots. My com 3 is available and functioning and the one I use for the 7300. I set all the Icom's setings back to where they were before playing with the new WSJT software. I may have to go see a computer repair person..and I'm generally pretty good with computers. DM 780 won't work either..some sort of comm problem I guess that is beyond me.wow.

    • @HamRadioAdventures
      @HamRadioAdventures  7 років тому

Hi Pete, thanks for coming back. If you are using two cables, sometimes it's an error caused by getting those two mixed up in the software. I've done it before :-) The USB cable is the Silicon Labs and the CI-V is the Prolific (sometimes FTDI) located in device manager. Can you pull up device manager and verify those and the COM port number?
If you are just using one cable (USB) and you have ACLog, DM780 and also WSJT-X configured to use it, only one of those programs at a time can can be open and using that COM port.
Try restarting your computer and then open ACLog. Sometimes that's all it takes. My settings in the radio stay the same and I use a bunch of different software, so rarely is it a problem with the 7300 settings. Just follow what I have in the videos.
My e-mail is good on QRZ.com, so shoot me an e-mail if you need too.
Did you see this? You can start up HRD and use HRD as "Rig" in WSJT-X. I have used it that way and then I use "Fake it" for split. I wrote a post on it. This should help, see the video: www.k0pir.us/wsjt-x-jt-alert/

      Hi Rich and thanks again.
I sent you a email from your qrz address.
      Arrgh. LOL
I'll copy and past what I sent in the email.
      Had this software working intermittently.
      Rig: IC 7300
      Settings on Rig:
      Data Off Mod USB
      Data Mod USB
      CiV Address 94h
      CiV Transceive Off
      CiV Baud Rate 9600
CiV USB Port Link to Remote
      CiV USB Baud Rate Auto
      CiV USB Echo Back ON
      USB Send Off
I am seeing signals on the waterfall for JT65 but no decode?
Oddly, earlier in the day I was decoding and even made a contact but I noticed the waterfall was blank at that time. Lots of decoded signals were coming in.
I wrote all settings down for the Icom and WSJT software.
I shut down the computer; when I came back later and launched WSJT and w/o making changes to the Icom, Bam...NO DECODE.
Another oddity, I was using Data Bits 8, Stop bits 2 at the time when it was decoding? I’ve also tried Stop bits 1 w/o success.
USB audio codecs appear OK and I do see signal strength on the bar graph and in the record sound levels.
Using CAT control, MODE None, (also tried Data pkt)
I’m wondering what's up after I reset all Icom 7300 menu items to what worked earlier, and now no go? Hmmm.
      Any help appreciated.

Mel Ming Nice to hear from you. Yeah the thing is that it seems to work either way a lot of the time. I found it doing this in Linux, my Mac and in my windows PC. Hi Fred, nice to hear from you and great question. I've heard that one a few times.
Usually, yes it's a connection error. Check the settings in the radio. Can you connect with another Ham application using the same cable? If so, then check the settings in WSJT-X. The baud rate, COM port, etc.

    • @HamRadioAdventures

Yeah hi Peter, it sounds like Hamlib is at fault, maybe corrupted. I had the same problem with my iMac and WSJT-X. Have you tried going to a older version of WSJT-X? Maybe version 1.7 and try to get it working. If that works go to version 1.8 rc1. I could not get version 1.8 rc2 to work. They have a Yahoo group and a Facebook page. I suggest the YaHoo group first. It is listed as wsjtgroup. Okay? 73-Rich, K0PIR

      Thanks Richard.
I still don't have it all worked out, but am getting closer.
      1) I was getting no power out. (mic/acc) does not work; I had to use SSB.
      2) I am getting audio clipping. Looked at the rig's outputs, all ok and turned down the USB codec level to almost zero with no result. Also tried reducing the RF gain on the radio; no joy there either. I am decoding FT8, but with the audio over load, I fear I am missing many of the stronger sigs.
      3) The JT modes seem to work all ok..Hmm?
Looks like more research is in my future.
Hamlib still shows a error about every 2 mins or so.

    • @HamRadioAdventures
      @HamRadioAdventures  7 років тому

For digital modes, check to see that you are in USB-D, otherwise no output. My DATA MOD is set to USB and my DATA OFF MOD is set to MIC,ACC. Those settings are under Connectors in the 7300 menu.
The FT8 signals I see in my waterfall are usually stronger than the JT65 signals. I believe most of that is due to high power stations. Some FT8 stations run a kilowatt or more. However, it doesn't create a problem usually. I would check out the YaHoo group and search some of their conversations.
