Actually it's really easy for an excellent singer to sing bad on purpose! All they have to do is impersonate themselves from when in their youth they didn't sing as well as they currently do.
It would be hard to do as you're trained to do it correctly. Psychologically alone, it would make a great vocalist cringe. Luckily for Chris, he can act and did a good job of it here.
So... you're just gonna pretend you can't sing the national anthem?!? We will all be here waiting for the 10 part Chris Mann harmony version. : )

When they chose the national anthem they never expected us to sing it as a solo full voice. If we ever develope a time machine, we'll send some one back and explained how problematic it has become. They can pick something nice like, "Oh, Canada. " Easy on the vocal cords with no tough high note.

I'm really glad you did this. Its a spoof but many aren't getting it. This is the sacred American cow that needs some ass kicking. Even Whitney was forced to SHOUT IT OUT, detonating the anthem like a bomb. This is a beautiful song, with voice modulation but when it is sung at the Super Bowl, the gladiatorial instincts take over and the singer BUTCHERS the song, belting it out like a drill sergeant - absolutely awful. You caricatured this audition perfectly. Bravo for airing my pet peeve! Every single super bowl anthem sounds like a Tom cat mauling!

The US national anthem is probably one of the hardest songs to sing because of the huge jumps in pitch and range of the notes in the song. So, if you can hit that note after just drinking water....you're doing good. :)
