Pfttt, why did the police officers back away when he started to sing again? Its like: "HA, WE HAVE YOU NOW, MURDERER! YOU HAVE NO WAY TO ESCAPE, AND NO WAY OF TRICKING US! SURRENDER!" *starts singing* "Oh dang it, okay, we need to let him finish the song to the girl we are trying to save. Stand down, Mark. Lets give it a minute or so. We are fair policemen here in Paris!" *chandelier falls and kills one of them* "well...shoot."
You clearly don't know the laws of physics and reality are totes diff in musical life/theater. It's sacrilege to interrupt a solo! Those who do.... IMPLODE. IT SIMPLY ISN'T DONE!!!
I came up with a plausible explanation. According to the 2nd "Notes" song, the officers are supposed to contain the Phantom by barring all the exits and capture him at the end of the play - "The curtain falls. His reign will end!" They were probably instructed not to disrupt "Don Juan" unless Christine was in immediate danger. The look that "Officer Left" gives before backing up indicates an "Oh shit the audience can see me" vibe.
@@AndrewMacLaine Nah because Raoul tells the policemen to aim to kill and shoot if they have the shot, during "Seal my fate tonight." They weren't gonna arrest the Phantom: they were going to kill if they had the shot.
I like the phantom removing his gloves to touch Christine. That’s the most interesting part of the choreography of this scene - what I found to be a clever change. I saw this cast live in LA and Mann was phantastic and Katie was very good.
I’ve never understood…why would he hop up onto the table while he’s trying to run away? What’s with the hand thing? What the heck is Christine’s table choreography? I hAvE sO mAnY qUeStIoNs?!?
I still can't get over this blocking. I just... wow. Haha. I don't know who approved this and how they've gotten away with it 😂 My personal favourite is the dreadful dance moves during "the sleeping bud burst into bloom". Whyyyy?
Dalek Supreme Haha I did! I saw this cast, too! The whole production made me so uncomfortable. I've seen the original production in NYC, London, and Toronto and hated the new and unneeded changes. I would've been fine with it if the changes made sense...but they really didn't 😂
I loved Chris Mann in the role. It was well past time a tenor played the role. Elements of Crawford in his delivery. Good Christine too. Everything else about the tour sucks sadly.
Shockingly, here is a quote referring to Mann: “His voice, which he describes as a kind of high baritone, is a good fit for the role of the Phantom.” - Daily Press
I love the awkward moments. 2:58 "WTF are you doing? This wasn't in the choreography." 4:28 "Don't touch me." 6:00-6:30 "I know you're engaged, but marry me instead." Did she slap him at 4:48?
Miss Travis has a lovely voice, and Mr. Mann is a decent Erik vocally, but the blocking (however strange it may be) was pretty bad with these two. It could be just because they felt awkward with the routine, but I can't tell because I have not seen either of them in these roles before. Anyway, thank you for posting this.
Whatever Christine it is, I love her. There really isn't a Christine I don't like. Each has something I like about her. Plus, my favourite Phantom character.
Shockingly, no, because there's a 2016 Cooper Grodin / Grace Morgan performance floating around with exactly the same choreography. They do it a bit better, though.
Well, this vid changed my mind about Chris. Saw him in Louisville, and he really had a bad night. All performers have them, i know, but it's hard to get over when you experience them live. But wow, this is exactly the kind of delivery I like to see! Pretty reprise. Thanks for sharing :)
Alright so it seems like a lot of people don’t like this updated show at all. So I am going to give example for how amazing this show and whole scene is. You can feel the emotion coming off the characters and honestly these actors work very hard and it’s all amazing what they are doing and this scene is very intense which is another reason why adults are less likely to like the scene from it being a sexual song. Well often if it’s a sexual song it’s going to have non graphic depictions of sex. This scene was not weird for me because I have seen Spring Awakening 32 times due to being on spot lights so I saw everything. This show is over all amazing and i think a lot of you currently see taking this for granite of how breathtaking and awe inspiring this whole show is. Just because it’s not the old way doesn’t mean it’s not amazing. People are scared to change but this is truly a great change and this tour and new way of doing this show brought in more fans and more audience members I mean from this tours production my little sister whom is 11 and I both love the show. Just people remember how amazing this show is and how hard the actors are working.
I respect your opinion. However, 1) actors working hard won't salvage poor blocking and direction, it just makes me sad that they can't be in a better show. 2) Less is more. The reason many liked the old PONR is BECAUSE it is more subtle - more sensual, not sexual. Oftentimes, there was more tension because the Phantom was deliberately NOT touching Christine, just like how sometimes covering something up will bring more suspense than showing it in the open. 3) Comparing it to Spring Awakening is apples to oranges. Spring Awakening is about the lack of communication and the repression of feelings in teenagers who are growing up has harmful effects. The stark, open sex scene is NEEDED to contrast the way adults absolutely refuse to speak about sex. This is not the case in Phantom. 4) Just for me personally, I love non-replicas and I'm very open to changes being made. What I don't like are BAD changes, and the new tour for me consisted of a whole lot of bad changes, with PONR being near the top of the list (it's beaten by MOTN, the first unmasking, and of course the Final Lair). 5) Part of what made the show amazing was the thought put into it by the director, designer, and choreographer. When that changes, it can and does make the show less amazing. Anyway, I appreciate and respect your opinion, but this is mine and I know many share it.
I'm not going to go into the blocking because well, I don't like it and I'll just leave it at that. Katie sounds rather nice here and her "dreams of love" was straight up eargasmic! Her voice has a quality to it that I haven't really warmed to but that is not her fault, she's a good singer and a fine actress (well as much as that stupid blocking allows). She however still seems like a child, like all the character development that's supposed to happen in Wishing reversed but I still enjoy her. As for Chris oh boy, his voice is rather light which is not a bad thing but it lacks power and I don't like that. Other than that he's a quite standard restaged tour phantom from what I've seen, nothing special. Especially not in this scene.
I just saw this restaged version live. POTO hadn't toured in my part of the world in 15 years, which means that many people saw the show for the first time. They probably only had seen the 2004 movie and I hope that how PONR is performed on stage blew their mind as much as it did with me. In short, no matter how bad the staging is, it is infinitely better than in the movie.
Chris Mann’s portrayal of the phantom was more sexy than creepy! Loved it! Saw phantom three times and his portrayal was the best. Better than the New York one. This blocking was way better than the one in New York.
Wait, there is one thing that is kind of bugging me throughout this. How did Christine find out it was the Phantom under the veil? In the original she kind of bumps into the mask and then you can tell she flinches and kind of jumps away from him. In this version? Is it when the Phantom takes off his gloves and Christine sees his hands and then she tries to get away? Is it his bare hands? What?
I believe it is when the Phantom attempts to cover her eyes; it reminds her of when he blindfolds her in MOTN, hence her horrified reaction and fighting against it.
Thank you Glass Prism for this. I have something to say to Chris. I love you man. You were a fellow section leader with me in the St. George's choir in Nashville when I was 17. I loved hearing your beautiful voice behind me every Wednesday night and Sunday morning for rehearsal and church. Everyone loved you. We all knew you were going places, but this I'm sad to say isn't so good. A lot of it isn't your fault. The staging is absolutely horrible in the entire show. Wow. I know how much you love Phantom and wanted to do his justice, but you really were too young for this role. Your voice doesn't suit it I'm sorry to say. I know it was an amazing experience for you, but I'm glad I didn't see it, as I would have been very disappointed. Also, it just makes zero sense that they don't just shoot him.
Great thank you for uploading, and Christine's dance is very graceful! At 5:02, Mr Chris Mann steps on the hem of his costume? It could be difficult for the phantoms to dance in the costume, and I wonder why the costume was adopted. As I know, when Mr JOJ performed 'Point of No Return', his costume was slightly different.
Could you please upload a song from Kaitlyn Davis? Preferably The point of no return or Wishing you were some how here again. There is only one video of her that I have been able to find, and it's Think of me. Thanks
This applies more to the replica production than restaged, but my theory is always that Christine is too close to the Phantom for them to try to "shoot to kill". Why they don't just arrest him is another question, but it is possible Raoul warned them not to, either because he's dangerous or because they're aware of his various "magic tricks", which could be distracting or dangerous and cause them to miss their chance at taking him down.
This is one of those blocking choices that I can actually see working, it is seductive majority of the time…. but i feel like the cast felt a little awkward performing it. It definitely needed to be workshopped more.
Yes, it needed more workshopping! The thing is, the actors are clearly instructed that they MUST execute these movements without any reinterpretation. This is done so no matter who is performing, it will be an identical show. I don't really agree with this practice, though I see it's merits.
I actually enjoyed the dancing and some of the new things they did to show the sensuality between the two characters. Though I do agree when she gets to standing on the table and there isn’t much interaction bwt them it’s a bit awkward Otherwise I like that it was inventive and something different
You usually just start by finding free gifts posted online or by asking people (politely, and do not ask for too many things - one or two audios or videos is usually the limit).
I feel none of the passion that should be present in this scene, of course I am partial to Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess in the 25th Anniversary performance. I find neither of these performers to be right for these roles and the blocking, well I think that speaks for itself. Lloyd Webber’s score is incredibly demanding vocally and this number is full of pitfalls . These two voices are flat almost all the way through. I like Chris’s studio work and I can see why he was cast as the Phantom. His tenor is reminiscent of Michael Crawford’s … when he’s on pitch. Michael was not the strongest singer to ever do this role, but he was the consummate performer of it. He never pushed his voice past its limits as Chris does here. These parts are incredibly demanding… The original Christine, Sarah Brightman, for whom the part was written was forced to drop out of the show after a few months because vocally she couldn’t cope. She came from the world of pop and did not have sufficient training and her voice couldn’t hold out. Michael knew exactly where the sweet spot was for his voice, enough but not too much and he stayed within it. No one has surpassed him as Phantom because the part requires as much showmanship and personality as it does vocal power. He was a true original, and all his successors are pale imitators.
Idk why they thought Chris Mann was a good idea for phantom. Can he sing? I'll give him that. But he turned the phantom into such a timid character. That isn't how the phantom is portrayed at all.
Guys idc what you think most of this blocking actually shows his desire clearly and I think it is made more smexy for the reason this is the phantoms fantasy so why wouldn’t she be dancing on a table all sexy like for him?
Was delighted by the vocal performances, but did the director DELIBERATELY block this to make it seem there was a complete lack of chemistry? Also, furimg some of the most difficult musical pmassages, they’re navigating this ridiculous table 🧐
This is one huge 'WTF' moment for me right now cause wtf?? Why are they singing with really weird inflections. It's like an overdone, syrupy Spanish accent. I get that Don Juan is Spanish, but... I don't know. ICK.
