Kilkerran 16 year-Old 2020 Vs 2021

- Today we review the first two batches for the Kilkerran 16 year old. The 2022 being an expression with 70% ex bourbon and 30% ex sherry cask matured and then 2020 being 98% bourbon and 2% Madeira. There does seem to have also been a 2020 that was 75% bourbon 25% sherry.

There’s a lot of fanfare for Kilkerran bourbon matured 46%ers. I find them ok but nothing spectacular. But have to tell ya this ..That water bottle is fancy looking, man. Love ya work boys. The more you meet, the better for us. Thank you.
Lol, Dustin finally bought a proper Glencairen Pipette. One day we will get this right. :)
@@topshelfwhisky guess we need a proper water glass now lol
Thanks for the honest review without all that hype around Kilkerran 16. 👍
Lot of hype. Average and forgettable whisky.
It’s impossible to find any kilkerran near me. Been looking for months in 2 separate counties. Next time I travel out of jersey I gotta find any bottling of it!
Availability can be very seasonal as they seem to come out once maybe twice a year only in the states.
I really liked the 2020. 87-88 for me.
Good timing. Just walked into my local shop and picked up SB15, 18 and 21, Longrow 18 and the latest KK12 and 16 all at retail price. I know I am very lucky to be able to do this. I think the 16 is not worth the extra cost over the 12 but both are a little overrated for me.
I thought they were overrated as well.
Agreed they are overrated and I agree you are lucky to have that selection locally... what's the local Lagavulin stock looking like?
well that's an unbelievable find!
I just stick to Kk12 and heavily peated expressions … no regrets so far 😋
I grabbed one of the heavily peated...I can't say I'm a fan, at all. Hoping they get better though.
We have the 12 year and will review at some point.
@@topshelfwhisky Hi Mike and Dustin
The 12year old is a little bit better, but I have a bottle of the 2020 and I think you are completely right on the 16 year old, you may be a little generous with your reviews on this whiskey, cheers guy's 🍻 !!!
@@topshelfdustin3060 Not sure about the recent expression but initial couple of expressions were amazing. You gotta give it time though … few months at least … it becomes very funky cheesy briny peat… I like that … maybe not your jam.
@@silverlochwhiskyreviews6157 i have batch 2 or 3, been open years now. I just can't get past the youth and the harsh natural malt. The peat is there and really the one thing working for it. I hope with more age it comes together better.
Thanks for the review guys. A lot of people seem not think these are not worth the step up from the 12. Also been hearing that the more recent 12's are not as good as the previous ones? Last one I had was a 19 or 20 ? Have one of the new Springbank like shorter bottles unopened so guess I will find out at some point. The older ones had a lot of subtle complexity that was so good. Cheers
I'm less impressed with the newest 12 than my previous ones but springbank gonna springbank. Review coming on that 12. But I wouldn't start to worry or think the sky is falling with KK.
I really loved the 2020 KK 16 and thought it sufficiently different to the 12. Love them both but the 16 was an older character. I used to buy KK all day long but it's gone to Springbank difficulty now.
@@welshtoro3256 thankfully here Kilkerran isn't anything like springbank, outside of those KK8's (which I don't like). But when Kilkerran sells out here, it's gone for a while.
Massive Springbank fan here....But I've tasted a couple of Kilkerran's other expressions (one of the ex-bourbon WIP's and the 8 Cask Strength). Your review echo's my thoughts exactly, I have yet to see the appeal with this distillery. Maybe something with (a lot) more sherry maturation?
I remember the 15 year-old single cask that was heavily cask influenced, Fino maybe... Nothing like Springbank, IMO.
it's dirtier than springbank. a good alternative when you consider the price point and availability of SB today. kilkerran is good but SB is damn good
with you man!
I'm still working my way through the Kilkerran 12 and its been up and down. Sometimes I'm convinced its motor oil mixed with whisky then other times its fruity and delicious...I dunno it may be the new bottling
Lol, next time to get that good spot, let me know the conditions.... please
Would you say that if you enjoyed the 2020 version that you'd also enjoy the 2021? I like the 2020 version well enough where I'm curious on the 2021. Cheers!
Yes, absolutely.
@@topshelfwhisky appreciated!
Very little difference and if we weren't doing them side by side, the notes and reviews would be even more pounced with us saying similar things.
@@topshelfdustin3060 I've heard that as well. I'll pass at the current price. Thanks!
The 2022 KK 16 I've just bought is a step up for sure!
