I saw your Ludwig comparison videos a few days ago, you are the most killer UA-cam drummer (especially for a drum store channel) I've ever seen. Gosh this channel is amazing!

Ryan, I have been waiting for this video for a year or so since I saw your Ludwig comparison video. Even the other snare videos you’ve done for 2112 sound fantastic.
You tune pretty much like me and other drummers I’ve seen on UA-cam.
Honestly I was expecting some kind of “special sauce “ or trick because all your drums seem to have a special bark that I love. Oh well I’m sure your year’s of tuning enables you to get the best sound out of any drum. Keep up the great work and video’s as again they all have that special sound you give them regardless of the manufacturer.

Years of experimenting with tuning definitely helps, but there's also something to be said about how you actually hit the drum - I hit just north of dead center to get that bark out of the drum.

Great video! Exactly how I tune. The only thing I could and is, making sure your rack tom isn't at the same pitch as the snare, which will produce sympathetic snare buzz when playing the tom. Anyway, love the channel and keep up the great work!!!

You are right! Ludwig guys just put the heads on and tune it up. I bought a Black Beauty and a Acrolite and the heads on both did not sit on the shell properly. First I thouhgt the shells were unround. There is room for improvment at Ludwig Drums. I expect quality work for the price I pay for. Simple as that.

Hey one more question for ya! You mentioned the higher overtones all being in tune when the head is about right, which obviously makes sense, but sometimes I'm in a spot where the low tones sound about the same, but the high overtones sound radically different. Do you ever ignore the higher overtones and just focus on the low notes? Also if one of the overtones is higher pitched than another, would you tune the lower one up? Sometimes I feel like it plays tricks on me and I'm not always sure which tone to focus on. Typically I go for the lower note and usually the drum sounds fine, but there is something magical when all the overtones are playing nice as well and I'd love to be able to get there consistently. Great work as always dude!

You can't really get away with ignoring any of it if you want the head to be perfectly in tune. Situations like what you've mentioned are when I will detune that tension rod and bring it up to pitch slowly. And of course, sometimes heads just don't want to get in tune with themselves, and shells go out of round, so it's a little bit different each time.

I spent a Dollar on a tuning App and my Supraphonic sounds perfect ever since. I think of it as tuning a guitar by ear, you can get it close if you’re good, but it’s never gona be perfect. I use a mallet and all lugs are at ~280 Hz, top and bottom. Takes 5 minutes and it’s perfect every time. Why not take advantage of the technology?

Why do I need technology when I can tune a drum to my standards in five minutes using my ear? Just because it takes a long time for me to describe the whole process doesn't mean that it takes me this long every time. Not all drums tune up the same, and it's important to get to know your gear. And besides, the better your ear gets, the more able you are to assess *why* a drum is or is not giving you the sound you want. Arbitrarily tuning to some pitch will not help in that regard.

@@2112percussion_ No no, it actually helped me understand my drums in a way that my ear couldn’t. When the lugs sound similar to me, the true pitch is sometimes surprisingly different. I didn’t want to disagree with the way you do it, maybe just add something complementary from my own experience. Your Snares always sound absolutely fantastic!
Because of your comparison video (my favorite) I bought a Supraphonic and a Supralite. I needed to know how close the Supralite really gets to the Supraphonic. Same heads, wires and lugs tuned the same. It’s close.
      Thanks for the great work!
