This project is perfect for so many reasons. I plan to make several. Thank you, from a just finished homeschoolers. 🙏 I started when it wasn't popular or really legal. Child number six graduated this past May, 😂 total close to 30 years!
I remember watching this tutorial and thought I can't make this. Well, time has passed and I've made many of Erica's projects. So I think it's time to give this a shot.! Thanks Erica😉 and Happy Mother's Day to all!💐
Had this playing in the background while I cleaned my work area ❤ OF STRING! I spaced off and then thought- (like I'm talking to the video) 'What is this? What are you telling me lady? What am I supposed to be learning?' and I remembered I needed something to catch all this STRING! 🤪😜 so excellent job! Love listening to tutorials and really relate to needing them lol. Thanks for the lesson lady - whose channel I've always been subscribed too 😍
Thank you for sharing. Like the stiffener you used to hold it open. Made one similar and used bird grit (pet supplies) for the filler. Added a plastic food container to hold threads and such. Makes it much easier to empty. Depending on size needed to fit inside the bag, insert a Solo plastic party cup style plastic container. Maybe a cut down fruit juice container. Mine fit a quart sized round container that originally held brunswick stew from a church fundraiser.
Thank you so much Erica, for this wonderful tutorial and written instructions for making the thread catchers. You are an awesome teacher. I followed the cut sizes mentioned in your written description area and everything is on point, I used some Pellon Fusible Interfacing *ultra lightweight* and some nylon webbing to help use up some of the materials I had in my stash. The catcher looks great, thank you
I love how bright and cheery your fabrics are . I realize that I do not have a single fabric style. So I like Bonnie and Camille, and I also like1930’s and 1860’s. I am all over the place. Watching your videos is so much fun!
I just finished my 4th thread catcher, and this one is for me. My daughter in law, and two granddaughters are the happy recipients of the previous ones. Thank you once again Erica for creating a video that’s easy to follow, and a fun project to sew. ❤️
Just discovered your fabulous video tutorials, Erica! Made myself an interchageable needle case and a thread catcher over the last 2 days and I LOVE them!! Thanks for putting all the time into creating the PDF's and the videos - they're great and very appreciated! God bless your homeschool journey - we homeschooled 3 boys who are now grown, and they are so grateful we did it!
Good morning Erica, I really enjoy making these, have made several for gifts and it is always one of those things that you give and the receiver has loved them always saying how useful it is. A little tip, I use walnut shells in alot of my crafting and to avoid the shells from possibly getting under the needle...eek..I put a small strip of batting or small piece of stuffing to close them in then sew. Outcome is no frustrating shells in the throat plate.
Love this thread catcher. Fabric is awesome. I made a fabric bin for my scraps and it works perfect. Just turn it inside out to empty and get all the loose threads. I need to make one of these too. Thanks. 🌷🐰🐥 Happy Easter 🐥🐰🌷
I had so much fun making this thread catcher bag, just one thing in pattern supplies, just make sure to add one lining fusible and one fabric for fusible fleece. Very cute when completed. Thank you
Thanks Erica for a fun project ... made one for my sewing table and made a 2nd one that I swapped out glass gems instead of walnut shells for added weight to hold my rotary cutter and scissors at my cutting table.
When I've made these I only sew each long side of the strap. This way I don't have to worry about pointy corners that nobody is going to see. Love your videos.
Hi Erica, I know this video is 5 years old, so you may not read this comment , but, I just made this thread catcher/pin cushion, and mine keeps slipping off my table. I have a suggestion where you sew a piece of rubber shelf liner to the bottom of the pin cushion so it doesn’t slip. Otherwise, it’s perfect and I love it. You are a very good teacher.
I'm making this tonight and I'm sooo excited! Also going to do one of your notions organizers. I love your projects sooo much. Keep making them, please!!!! Especially with winter coming. I'm going to need fun projects to keep me busy!
Outside fabric I changed it to 3.5x10 not 6.....turned out really good, ty for video, I have also followed your sewing machine mat, thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍
Thanks Erica for this tutorial ❤🎉. U are the Best Sewing Guide❤.I'll make this for Sure 😊. This is such a fun project. My Thanks from India Erica🎉. Keep sharing.
I loved your video and being new to sewing, your tutorial was amazing! I made this in an evening and I'm so pleased with it! Love all your sewing videos 😍😍
Super LIKE! Will be making some Christmas gifts for my sewing and knitting/Crocheting friends and family members. It's never to early to start making gifts :D:D. Thanks so much for this.
I love that this is one of those projects that has a big "reveal" at the end, but no clue on how you did the boxing as the video did not show how you achieved the flat diamond shape (PDF doesn't have that process either). I went old school and boxed my corners by cutting out ac square. I really enjoyed making it, thank you
Erica , you have got to expand out on how to fold the end of the bag with the turning opening in it with a few more shots of how you are able to get the fabric placed to form the diamond. It took me 2 hours of flipping and twisting before I finally got that end in the position you need to make the corners!!!!! and I am mechanically inclined too !!!!!! if there were just a few more shots showing slowly how to shape that end of the bag tube , it would have been very helpful. The other end I had no trouble shaping into a box for the outer fabric.
Hi, I'm sorry that was confusing. It's called boxing the bottoms and I do it on all of my bag projects, so I may have done it faster on this one. Sorry!
Amalia Lopes My quilting store made a bunch of these and put a piece of plastic inside to keep the pins from going through and possibly scratching your furniture. They also put something rubbery on the outside bottom to make it so it didn’t move. I think stripes of hot glue would work. They used boning for the top of the bag. I’ve saved some of the flat strapping from boxes that I will use. I can’t wait to make one of these with a matching sewing machine mat.
Erica...I am beginning to search for a new sewing machine. I've been looking at the Juki...2000. How do you like yours? If I want to buy American....but buy similar to the Juki....what might you recommend? Love my thread catcher! Making one for a friend who just bought her first machine. Thanks again! You have the BEST tutorials out there!
Love this! I just made it! Could you please check the length of the strap? The PDF says 6" .. I thought that was too short so I redid mine to 10 inches and it worked fine. Thanks again for a great tutorial!!
But it’s longer in your video than the pillow is wide. And your instructions would make that 3 inches. And width of pillow is 4.5. I think your measurement is incorrect.
I have a question? Where did you get the tape ruler that is on your sewing machine ? I loved making this pattern. Your instructions are always so clear. Thank you 😊
Love it! Have a question on the length of the strap...I’m watching the video as I’m assembling it. My strap is WAY shorter than what yours looks like. At 2:09 I paused the video to notice the length of your strap is the same length as the length of your pillow. So just double checking because my strap has turned out a little ‘stumpy’ - is this correct?
Linda Holder nothin yet - but I remade the strap same length as the pillow and honestly the size she’s listed in the instructions works as well. The longer strap that I credited hangs the ‘bag’ a little longer off the table than I’d like. But either way, I still love the outcome. Will definitely make more with some of my own modifications. It’s inspired me 👍🏼
So now I’ve made two, one with the strap cut at 10” (or at least what it looks like on the video) & a second with the strap as written in the instructions at 6”...either way you can’t go wrong! Just depends on your personal preference on how far you want it to hang. The only thing I’ve done differently is sewn most of the pillow’s final seam, filled with shells, then finish that last edge. I must fill it too full because I just can’t get the shells to move around enough to finish the last two sides...just not enough room. So I’ve made it how it works for me - just love the end result! Thanks again for the pattern and instructions!!
Hi Erica, lovely project but noticed from your video that the size of your strap was bigger. I have ended up with a small square 3inches by 3 and half inches. I stared with a piece of fabric 3 .5 x 6 inches as your instructions next to your video. please could you say if I have made a mistake. many thanks
I am making this thread catcher and the dimension for the strap in the description seems to be wrong. When I look at yours compared to the pillow, they look to be the same length. I’ve recut mine to 3.5” x 9.5”. I adjusted the fusible fleece too.
That’s what I’m saying...it’s walnut shells....ground...in kitty litter. I didn’t realize that....but they’re the same thing.....crushed walnut shells ARE what kitty litter is made of.....ask in a pet store. They sharpen pins/needles
For much cheaper walnut shells, visit a pet store and buy "kitty litter" - compare to bag of "walnut shells" - they are identical! Tenth of the price....you can make dozens of pin cushions for much less money than purchasing "walnut shells" from quilting supply stores!
Most people use walnut shells because they're said to "sharpen" your pins when you use it. I'm not sure kitty litter would do the same thing? Or if you don't care, then I suppose you can use whatever you want. I've also used rice before! :)
Hi Erica. Thank you for a great video. I have been sewing along with you, having previously downloaded the pattern and cut out all the pieces. Unfortunately, your measurements in the pattern don't seem to match your video - the strap is much shorter in the downloaded pattern. I will continue with what I have cut out but wondered if you were aware of this?
The strap is correct on the pattern, I made mine a little too long, so I adjusted it on the pattern. When you fold it in half it should only be 3" long.
@@erica_arndt Thank you for clarifying . I have sewn and ripped, read and reread trying to figure out what i did wrong. LOL Thank you for the video. It means a lot for a professional to help us new comers. Thanks again....
Love this video except I think you accidentally wrote the strap measurements in the pattern incorrect. Mine can out so small then I saw in your video when you laid the strap by the pillow it was the same length so I remade it. Thanks!
Ok, thanks! Mine came out great! The only thing I did differently was I added a small square of rubbery shelf liner to the back of the pin cushion so it wouldn’t slide on the table top. Thanks for the tutorial!
My cut pieces do not come out the size you show. Is 3.5" cut as 3 1/2? I don't know how to read 3.5. I'm just a beginner and these instructions are so frustrating I give up.

Great video! Clear fusible vinyl on the lining piece will keep threads from "sticking" and make it much easier to empty.
What a nice tip, wonder if PUL would do the same.
I enjoyed this video very much! I usually don't make craft items but now I will be making this along with the mat I watched earlier.

Dear Erica , you are simply wonderful. I need to make this right away.🤗
made one and I love it. Can't wait for more sewing project. Thanks, Faith
Thanks. Your instructions are clear and concise. Will be making one! Thanks for sharing!
I like to use ripstop nylon as the lining fabric because threads fall right out and it is cheaper than PUL. Great video👍
Great gift idea for my sewing friends.
Thank you so much I love your technique, specially how you put the support on the edge to make it more firm. Blessings
Thanks for an easy thread chatcher I 've made one going to make another for my sister .
sweet! Happy Valentine's day

Another great tutorial ! I always love the fabric you choose.. Tfs jennifer
I love this tutorial and will be making one for myself. Thanks for sharing!
You can use extra fine steel wool or emery sand and it will keep you pins sharp.
What I did, I did a top stitch on the inside to catch the webbing before I sewed it closed. No need for pins then.
Love it! Can’t wait to make it.... off to get walnut shells! Thank you!
This is so cute and practical! Thank you
I just made this and I love it!!
Thank you for the measurements and directions, it made it so much easier to understand. 🌸💖💕

A friend suggested going to the pet supply store for walnut shells. Much cheaper. They use them for reptile cages
YES! That's a great place to get them!
Your link to the batting is for BATTING. Not the fusible fleece. :) Glad I caught that before I ordered. Love your stuff!
Oh thanks I’ll update the link, also you can use quilt batting too
What a great and cute idea.

Hi! Love it! fantastic!!!!!!!!
How does the catcher stays in place, not slipping to the floor?
The weight of the pin cushion keeps it on the table.
@@erica_arndt I see! So I really have to use heavy stuff to fill. I was considering to use cotton... Not possible..

I was thinking or I’d do on my project , tack down the white tape , just so it stays in place !

Yes, you can also use sand or rice, though I think rice may dull pins over time :)

There are links for everything under the video and on my blog :)
Is it me doing something wrong or should I have cut my strap longer than the 6" per instructions ?

Hey Erica.. Thanks for sharing the details. I couldn't locate the pdf. Could u pls guide me to find the pdf.
It's linked right below the video, if you don't see it click the 'show more' link. :)
My cut pieces do not come out the size you show. Is 3.5" cut as 3 1/2? I don't know how to read 3.5. I'm just a beginner and these instructions are so frustrating I give up.
Hi, yes 3.5" = 3 and 1/2 inches
Can you use boning instead of the webbing
I don't see why not?
Hope so as our shops are closed as in Ontario Canada and I just have boning. I will let you know, thank you 😊
The instructions say the material size for the strap is 3 1/2 x 6. But it looks like it’s at least 10 inches long in the video according to your mat
Follow the PDF instructions, I updated the strap to be a better length.
Love it will try to make one for me 1st
