Tecmo's deception and the deception series in general is an all time favorites that I never shut up about so I'm glad to see it here. Believe it or not it was the 2nd ps1 game I ever played growing up and it left quite an impression and was very creepy at the time lol but yes the PAL name I think is much cooler
Wow. Po'd. My first PS1 experience was saving up twenty dollars to rent the console from my local video store. They only had a few games to pick from and I remember the box art of Po'd being something that stood out to me and it was the game I rented. I was absolutely horrible at it but also absolutely marveled at it. This video series has been straight up great and inspiring. Loving the channel.
“Unfortunately putting controller ports in a disc is excessive, and also impossible,” I don’t know why but this sentence makes me want to try to put controller ports in a disc, even though I know it won’t work
Every time one of these comes out I think "surely we're running out of PS1 games" and every time I'm so wrong. Not that there's anything wrong with that, keep 'em coming
Deception is still a very fun and (still!) unique set of games and It's easy to see that the 2nd game is where the gameplay settles in and the series finds its footing. Who knew sadism could be so amusing? Hopefully the next two entries are covered here at some point.
I had some friends over for a game day a couple years ago and the biggest hit by far was Micro Maniacs. 7 people were able to play at once and everything was clean enough that we all could understand what was happening and had a great time playing it. This is coming from someone that never played the Micro Machines games. Highly recommend it
Micro Maniacs and Micro Machines V3 are two of my favourite top down racers ever and they make excellent party games! Im always setting up either game when i have guests over and its always a blast. Happy to see them get more coverage!
I LOVED MICRO MANIACS!!! Althought it really feels a little bit too frustrating for me when I try to play it nowadays. I remember finishing the game several times with perfect 1st place wins and even getting the lightbulb character but now when I try to play it it just feels TOO hard. It really takes a very long time to get to learn the controls and, more importantly, the tracks - if you don't know the track really, really well, then you're gonna lose for sure. If I just had the time and patience to learn it all again it would definitely make me very happy.
Thank you so much for another really fun and really informative video! Game 1: I really love how very different each character is and that there are so many different modes. Game 2: Ah, such a classic. It always gives me Dungeon Keeper vibes as well. Game 3: I know this mostly from the 3DO. Needless to say, it is such a really weird FPS. Game 4: Such a fun fighting game. Also unique in that it is more based on projectile combat than melee combat. Kitties spotted at: From 18:16 to 18:28, 39:06 to 39:08, 39:17 to 39:26 and 1:17:28 to 1:17:33 Also, yes, having your cats in your videos makes it totally worth it!
I love watching these vids and showing my friend and both of us going "god I remember playing that" on different games. This era was so nostalgic especially micro maniacs I loved playing that when I was a wee lad.
Nothing is more thrilling than when the wheel spins, comes close to landing on a game that I wanna see and it does or it doesn't. Praise the almighty wheel.
Destrega somehow sounds like the winner from this Episode. I happen to own a Promo copy of it, it´s in my collection for years now, never played it. Will give it a play today though.
It scares me and makes me feel super old when some of my favorite games of my childhood is on this list and they're listed as obscure or forgotten. Now if you'll excuse me, grandpa needs to take a seat because i can feel my bones turning to dust in real-time.
As janky as the controls may be, Micro Maniacs is one of my all time favourite hidden gem games, and it’s a concept I wish a modern day game developer would explore.
I saw the copy of trapt in the video at the end of the first game and thought "oh, I should suggest reviewing tecmo's deception". Little did I know... The first one is still my favourite in the series, the tone is so much better than in the sequels...
Tecmo's Deception is one of those games I've only ever heard about. Weirdly enough because the disc makes a unique monster in Monster Rancher 2. Looks pretty cool though, you get a similar kind of vibe from games like Boneraiser Minions that lets you place all sorts of traps and shrines on the game field.
Powerful unexpected nostalgia hit for Micro Maniacs, a game I havent thought about since I was a kid despite now auddenly remembering I played it a ton.
Deception 1: this is in a sense, a dark comedy. You defeat enemies in hilarious ways, you use sadistic techniques to survive, and ultimately you may end up becoming what you swore to destroy. This is a dark and foreboding tale with plenty of humor to keep you entertained Deception 2 onward: *WE NEEDS MORE BREATS*
Honestly, I feel Dungeon Keeper, another bad-guy sim, did the concept of a dark comedy where you use sadistic techniques to win more successfully than the Deception games as the humour was far more prevalent and the concept of running your own dungeon and raising an army to conquer the surface might have been a bit more appealing than Deception's concept of being an evil minion in service to the devil gleefully snuffing out good guys with traps to most gamers. Plus, the sequel chose to keep Part One's tone intact, unlike Deception's sequels which went for evil girl fanservice/femdom bait. However though, even I'll admit that Deception did more than earn its small following over time.
I'm not huge on racing games so micromachines was never on my radar... But Micro Maniacs actually really piques my interest, not just on art direction but the mechanics too. I had completely forgotten that PO'ed had a ps1 version so seeing it show up here was a surprise, as you say that one of the most 3DO games to have ever 3DO'ed.
OMFG Micro Maniacs actually made it! Thanks a bunch, dude. This video just made my day, for some weird reason. PS: You do great work. If anyone in this site deserves a bigger audience (10 or 15 times bigger), it's you.
Great selections in this volume. Games 1 and 3 in particular are both weird and wonderful in very different ways, was very interested to hear your takes on them. The other two look fantastic and I must add them to my games-I-am-vaguely-aware-of-and-should-get-around-to-playing-one-day list.
I said it before and I'll say it again. Sean just seems like the kind of dude youd like to have a beer with. Always a good day when you upload brother, Thanks for your hard work!
Micro Maniacs soundtrack going from early Need for Speed to Rollcage and then Crash Bandicoot is tonal inconsistency if I’ve ever heard it, or it’s complete genius. Sometimes the two can be very easy to confuse
Ah, good old wheel goodness. Quite the quartet of picks there, which funnily enough, three of which I have. PO'd was a game I'd literally never heard of and bought it on a whim on Ebay as it was cheap. Glad I did, even though I'll definitely be playing on easy 😅 Destrega is one I found a promo copy of, and took the plunge when I saw the publisher/dev behind it. Awesome coverage as always Sean, get happy as a clam when I see my notification for your videos :)

But after the second level, it became more and more interesting to my eyes with the jetpack gameplay and the large levels with complex level desigh. It became one of my favorite FPS on the console. Micro Maniacs I own this game on years but never really played it, I'll soon do it, mainly because I love MicroMachines franchise and it looks fun in your review. OMG, I loved Destrega as a kid!!! ❤ I even bought it again when it was added to the PSN!!!! No one ever talks about it. It's so unique. Such nostalgia.
Destrega is a game that I grew up on lol I played that for so many hours lol the same with Deception such a unique concept. I’m not sure if you ever heard of psone game Master of Monsters at all but If you haven’t you should def give it a play lol. But your channel is great dude very very underrated channel right here
Thank you! I know the name of the game, but very little about it! I'll add to the wheel as your viewer pick if thats ok? I think it would be fun to check it out if it shows up!
@@SeanSeanson Just finished catching up and I've been having a blast, now I'll take a little break and check out the Japan-exclusive obscure and forgotten games.
Since it was spotted in the video, it's worth noting that Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess just went on sale on PSN for $19.99 until August 3rd, 2023. Anyone interested in the series should check this out. You don't need to have played the previous games (in fact, it's the easiest one for new players to get into), and all of the content from the original release of Deception IV: Blood Ties is included.

Hello Sean, I really enjoy your videos! I want to share a tip for playing untranslated japanese games: I set up a phone (android, potentially should work for iOS?), so that the main camera can capture the TV that I am playing on. Then I start the official "google translate" app, wherein I open the live translation of the camera feed. @@SeanSeanson Kula world is one of my favourite games of all time, to the point that I have a prerelease press copy of the game so it makes me very happy that someone else loves it too :D
I can't speak for PAL regions, but in North America, Deception and Destrega are both a mere $5.99 to purchase digitally on PS3 and Vita! It's an excellent way to play some otherwise pricey games
I would personally recommend "The Note" for one of the most hilarious english dubs that i heard and Radikal Bikers as a game with the most hilarious song in all of gaming
Somebody already has the note, so if it's ok with you I'm gonna add Radikal Bikers cause I used to play that in spanish arcades all throughout my childhood and I neeeeeed to try this PS1 port.
Wow I had totally forgotten Destrega, only that I remember the anime-ish arena fighter with some extreme jiggle-physics! Did the demo disc with Destrega also have the kinda similarly "easy-to-pick-up with surprising complexity anime-fighting" game Evil Zone?
Wow what great memories destrega! It has a beautiful story. I totally agree that it bores very easily though. When I bought it I completed the story in about an hour and a half, it was phenomenal, but soon after I didn't know what to do anymore. In short a great game as short and boring right after completing it. However it will always remain in my heart, good times by the way when I was always fighting gradd and Milena in the demo lol endlessly. Congratulations man you have a new subscriber! :D
I've heard of and played Destrega, but not so much the others. I'd try them but, sadly, I'm over 30, and I have arthritis in my fingers. I could go for some quiche right now, though. Anyway, glad you're back. I like to watch your videos.

Your channel is so cozy Mr.Sean . Shout out to Club Playstation!
Already saved this to watch as soon as I get off work. big!
Had to take off work due to intense abdominal pains, might be looking at a hospital stay in the near future, and... my faith in THE WHEEL has gifted me this to ease my suffering.
*THE WHEEL SHALL PROVIDE*

I love your Channel Sean so many hours of comfort :) Thank you cant wait for the next one. Take care
thank you appreciate the kind words
Praise the Wheel. His servant has come back.
No idea if this is counted as obscure enough, but Kula World (Roll Away in NTSC) would be great to see. Fun little puzzle game, with banging music.
look any excuse to play Kula world, i'll take it. So consider it added
Tecmos Deception is such a fun game that no one talks about
16:24 whatever this song is, it just has Moving Shadow written all over it, this sounds like something that would come on while I was playing Rollcage
@@SeanSeanson all right, thanks for responding, I still have that "I AM A PIZZA MAN" stuck in the recesses of my mind thanks to that game
A plot in a micro machines game wild. I played this and never gave an f. This game was fun on the website
Wow I had totally forgotten Destrega, only that I remember the anime-ish arena fighter with some extreme jiggle-physics! Did the demo disc with Destrega also have the kinda similarly "easy-to-pick-up with surprising complexity anime-fighting" game Evil Zone?
It did not, but we do love some Evil Zone! The no.1 one button fighter
my mother bought me Tecmo's Deception at waltmart for a cheap price when I was a teenager. I loved this game. Thanks mom (rip)
Opening up with a clip from Poy Poy, banger
Edit; Jesus Christ it's Po'ed, there's a game I haven't thought about in a long time
Deception reminds me of the best parts of Dungeon Keeper.
Always makes my day when you upload one of these
I feel like that gun you hate the sound of in PO'd is using just a slightly crustier version of Doom's plasma gun's SFX.
I had to turn down the crust in editing, I assure you it's crustier than you could ever imagine
What a wonderful birthday surprise! The wheel provides!
happy (belated) birthday! 🎉
I've heard of and played Destrega, but not so much the others. I'd try them but, sadly, I'm over 30, and I have arthritis in my fingers. I could go for some quiche right now, though.
Anyway, glad you're back. I like to watch your videos.
