What is a good (non-alcohol) substitute for the brandy?

Apple juice, cold black tea or even a strong mixture of ginger cordial and water would work well too.

orange juice, this cake is originated from Kerala, India and the name of this cake itself is christmas cake. I am very sure that this lady learned this cake recipe from some indian, but she make totally different than indian style, she uses 90% of the ingredients same as we do but she make this cake as someone mke curry. you have to follow steps, like beat egg white separate and egg york separate, we soak dry fruits in orange juice overnight, then caramelize one cup of sugar to almost coffee colour and this is the most important part to get the best cake. this lady is poring brandy on the top of the cake but traditionally when making the cake brandy is mixed with the ingredients before you bake.

@@annaarbas12155 It is indeed English in origin, NOT Indian. It's origins go back to before the 16th Century to something called 'Christmas Porridge'. In any case, why would Indians create a CHRISTMAS cake?

This made me cry, I wasn't even looking for a Christmas cake recipe, a total different recipie, just the look of it made me cry, then as I watched you, and you said making it in November, 😥 my beautiful mum, always did this, and a very similar recipie as yours, she passed away christmas morning at 7am , 5yrs ago this Christmas coming... Gee I miss her, I haven't made a Christmas cake before, she always did the honours, and I haven't eaten any for 5yrs now.. I'm going to give it ago, in honor of my mum, it was always just me and mum growing up, just the 2 of us, we were close, even though money was tight growing up, she always splurged on making this beautiful christmas cake.. I hope I do it justice for my family.. She would of been 76 on 10th Dec 2020.

Awww Shane your comment brought a tear to my eye. It is difficult to lose a loved one on any day of the year but Christmas must be so so heartbreaking. I hope your cake turns out well. I'm sure your mum will be with you, looking over your shoulder to ensure it turns out perfect. Try to enjoy the day, I am sure your mum would not want you to be sad. My kindest wishes to you. Take care

Hi Shane. I am sure you made the cake perfectly, because your heart is in it. Traditions are what make a family and following/ passing them through the generations is what love is. I literally turned into my Grandma and mimic everything she made. You also pick this great channel to make your mom proud!

Hi Shane. So sorry to hear of your mum passing away Christmas day, i know exactly how you feel because i also lost my mother on Christmas morning 20yrs ago after she had been battling emphysema for 12yrs.
I couldn't bare Christmas after that, wouldn't put up no decorations or tree and Christmas song's knocks me for six, especially when the day gets closer.

Shane Dear. Losing our loved one is not easy. I too lost my dad last Month. And now it's 5 days before Deepavali. And I am preparing all the cookies and Indian sweets for my children. My late dad always loved my kids and slogged till his last breath for them. When I got a call at 4.30 from the doctor saying. We removed the ventilator to do a scope but your father passed away. I was shattered. I never thought he would die. Perhaps I was thinking my dad is gonna leave forever.
Last I saw him in cold hands wrapped in a white cloth. I kissed him and said.. Appa( Dad) you won the race. U go 1st and I'll join u.
I miss him everyday. Sorry to story so much here. It's your space actually. I understand how much your mum would have been close with you. She left you with all beautiful moments to cherish. She left you will all good memories to recall. She never left you. Her blessings are always there for you.
Cheer up and bring on life to your mothers culture fruit cake. Love y'all. Take care. This Too Shall Pass

I made this Cake in November 20th, 2022. This is my 1st ever Christmas Cake and my first ever cake. Today, on Boxing Day of 2022 I cut into the cake and served a segment to my Wife - who has made our Christmas cake for the last 40 years.......No pressure then! I said nothing to her about ingredients or method and she said: 'This is the best Christmas cake she has ever tasted!' Wow! And I have to agree. She has asked me to bake it next year. 😁. Many thanks for your precise, easy and pleasant video

  • @tcbbear

This is simply the easiest and the BEST Christmas cake EVER - moist, loaded with fruit and alcohol and just delicious. I made one a couple of weeks ago with the intention of saving it for Christmas, sadly my birthday came along a couple of days ago and I couldn't resist it. Over half of it is already devoured and the family LOVES IT! I have my second one in the oven right now with 45 minutes of cooking time left. Thank you so much. All my family and friends are going to use this recipe this year. I feel very festive, decorated for Christmas last weekend, have Xmas music blaring out and a log fire crackling away (courtesy of You Tube on the TV lol). I did make a couple of changes (to fit the ingredients I had in) which have worked really well. Instead of individual portions of dried fruit and cranberries I just used 1kg of mixed dried fruit and I added the glace cherries additionally to the 1kg. I used dark brown sugar instead of light and it has given the cake a very rich, festive look, smell and taste. I also added a teaspoon of vanilla essence and I discovered i had no mixed spice, so I added just a touch more cinnamon and a little bit more all spice (maybe 3/4 teaspoon, I was worried that might have made it taste bitter but not at all!). I didn't have cherry brandy so added whiskey. I guess with this excellent recipe ANYTHING goes and it would be very difficult to mess it up or overcook it at such low temperatures. I gave the postman a slice yesterday and he said it is better than his Gran's - a huge compliment. Seriously BEST CAKE AND METHOD EVER!!!!!! Thank you Kitchen Sanctuary!!

We love the taste of Pecans here in the Southern US. ..Could they be substituted for the almonds? Thank you so much for this wonderful looking fruitcake! I have a friend that talks about taking this brandy as a medicinal years ago! So I think I will surprise her with it! It surely ought to make her feel wonderful!

You can line the bottom of a springform tin by placing the paper over the removable bottom and then closing the side over the bottom as per usual, then cut the excess off and greasing the pan will help keep the paper in place.

used to make a similar cake to this for Christmas , except i used a tin of strawberries and a bar of Bournville Dark Chocolate in mine , soaking the dried fruit overnight in brandy , worked out wonderful everytime , so moist and no need to feed it every week , great recipe , my husband loved it , his idea of a slice was not a one inch by three inch , instead it was a slice the whole way across the round cake LOL , I also covered it completely in marzipan and then royal icing , with lots of stand up peaks , as in snow , decorated it with my mum's vintage Christmas cake decorations from the 1940s , Christmas Tree , Santa Claus , Reindeer , Robin etc., carrying the cake with us , on our Christmas Holidays to The Lake District , Cumbria , and The Yorkshire Dales , at Hawes and even over to Roundstone , on the West Coast of Ireland , with a Touring Caravan and 2 cats , my husband died , almost 7 years ago , but your lovely cake recipe , evoked sooooo many happy memories , of times gone by , special magical times !!!!❤🎉😂

This looks a much easier way of baking my Christmas cake than I usually try. Just bung everything in the same large pot. I like the idea of stirring the butter, eggs, sugar, fruit, nuts and brandy all together, rather than separate mixing.

Hi, Nicky. I've made this cake already....it was yummy! :) I was wondering, what do you think of adding fresh herbs (like thyme or rosemary) in it and some other combo of fruits? Do you think it would work the same way, without going bad? Thank you. :) and see you on twitter hehehe

This is a boiled fruit cake which I’ve been doing for over forty years. When it’s all in the pan simmering I add one medium tin of pineapple chunks and all the juice.
It doesn’t taste of pineapples but makes it so moist you, could eat it the next day. In fact I add everything I can think of, nuts cherries, glacé ginger balls chopped and some ginger syrup. Then when cooked pour brandy over the top. Delicious everytime.
