You've created an environment for Jacob to thrive and grow as a man and a woodworker, I'm not surprised someone wants to employ his skills. You can be proud of that. But I can imagine the silence will be deafening at first - but it's a new chapter for Dad and Son. All the best.

I was hoping that was what the video would be about. Congrats Jacob, the outside experience will be brilliant. He'll get not only the pounds but the experience of working in a bigger team, more responsibility and wider range of clients. It'll all pay if and when he comes back to a stronger business and experience. All the best guys!

Karl, I started a successful business that got me through the covid days after watching your how to make a reclaimed rustic dining table video. I'd never had any experience working with wood before, but I needed something to basically help me survive as I had zero income at the time. After replaying your post about 20 times, I took the plunge, bought tools, put ads up on Facebook Marketplace, started making tables and benches and made an absolute killing for 2 years. I couldn't keep up with orders during that period and never had one unhappy customer...and I put that down to following your advice to the letter. The arse fell out of it the day after we ended lock down, but it doesn't matter. I found another job. Bottom line, I still love your vids and I'm incredibly grateful and happy that I came across your channel. Best of luck with the next chapter mate!

I've been watching your videos from the beginning. I just loved the down to earth, salt of the earth guy from Ull. As you'll remember I took one of the videos particularly to heart when things were really dire for you during the pandemic and you were struggling. I met you, Jacob and your lovely misses at Makers Central a few years ago and you were all exactly as people see you on the videos, warm, friendly and welcoming. I still have the mug I bought that day and it always makes me smile. I genuinely wish you and Jacob all the very best of luck for now and into the future. ❤️

As far as the energy thing goes all I can say is WTF! How does it even get that far without somebody noticing? Giving up a secure job with regular income to start your own business is a gutsy move but at least you won't regret never giving it a crack. Sad times for sure Karl but you can take solace from the knowledge that you gave Jakob a good solid start from which he has flourished and grown. Anyway cobber, I'm sure things will get sorted out and you'll be going full steam ahead in no time. All the best.

Karl, I've been so proud as a dad watching my kids grow, learn and become the wonderful successful adults they are. How much prouder would I have been to be able to say, "I taught them the trade that got them started". You've done just that. Do remember though, nothings over quite yet. I'm certain Jake appriciates everything you've done and still is, and always will be part of it. Nothing ends, it just moves on. That's the way of things and it's good. Many good wishes to you both and your family.

I know it's got to be hard to not have him with you. My oldest daughter has three children. Little Kevin is the oldest then there's Ayanna and the Nyah. When they were little I'm taking 9, 8 and 6 . They would come spend the weekend with my wife and me and they would be in my work shop going through my scrap ply and find pieces that they wanted me to help them build things. Mostly swords ,daggers and bow and arrows. Then they would head out to the yard to battle dragons and different enemies. Kevin just graduated high school and Ayanna is a junior and Nyah is in 8th grade. I miss them coming over and building things together. So I know how you feel. Thanks for the videos.

I can tell how emotionally this has effected you and your family. People always think but you have your own 😮business. Until you have your own business you can’t understand the stress and commitment and hours you put in. It’s all consuming. My advise to my kids is to find a Monday to Friday know that u can have the weekends to recharge. Go to work, finish work and switch off. The time you have had teaching and working together is priceless. So many businesses have been hit with ridiculous energy bills, they seem to have come from nowhere and it’s never small amounts but thousands the stress and worry it’s so scary. Glad that u r keeping going and I wish u the best. Unfortunately life requires money to live it. You should be proud of yourself and your son, your hard working and positive.

Mate, you’re original shed tour is how I found your channel and was a massive inspiration to make my own tiny workshop. I’ve always admired how real you’re videos are, not trying to paint a glossy picture with fancy machinery, just making stuff with what you’ve got. You must be so proud of Jacob, despite the hardship he’s clearly had an inspiring start to his career and will no doubt go on to do great things, maybe even employ his dad one day 😂 I’ve got two young sons and can only hope to enjoy the times you’ve had with Jacob

  • @GrumpysWorkshop4

As sad as it is mate & I can tell how upset you are but you need to look at all this in a positive way. It was you who gave your son the opportunity to do his apprenticeship & now your son is moving on to a great opportunity doing something he enjoys. That is all down to you & jake will always be grateful of the opportunity you gave him. Yes you are now gonna be working alone but atleast you have your son still & he will still visit the workshop. You can still make silly videos together & maybe a video tour of his new place of work.
The main thing to remember is you have a great family behind you that will always be there for you. I'm sure you will adapt to the changes like a duck to water. Atleast you have plans moving forward.
Since my wife died I just feel like I'm stuck in a rut. Just been doing reviews on the channel as they cost nothing but time but even that's been a struggle. Don't think others enjoy it too much either as channels basically standing still & views are non existent. I havnt even made anything for about 1 1/2 yrs now. Just seem to have no enthusiasm. Don't get me wrong I enjoy being in the workshop but my wife was always my biggest supporter, even when I hated something she loved it. Without her nothing feels the same anymore. Anyway I'm getting off point this was supposed to be about you. Like I've said, keep your chin up everything jakes achieved is down to your teaching & the great start you've given him. Who knows what the future holds but keep being yourself & doing what you do & I'll keep watching. Thanks for the update & goodluck for the future.

Karl, I totally understand how you're feeling also Jacob's reaction to all of this, from someone who has been down the route of self-employed in the past, it's extremely hard and challenging to say the very least. I recall working about 90 to 100 hours a week and honestly I didn't get to pay myself for around 15 months continuously. Every single penny either went back into stock for the business or was spent on bills. It was a living hell that I felt like I was fighting all the time, nomatter what I tried or did and it almost broke me ,had it not been for my wife and her standing by me I don't know where I'd have been today. That said I do believe that it's not the end for you and Jacob plus he needs to try realise all the things he's going to be learning and making good money for. You and I both know you can't beat having the experience or the journey you have while getting the experience, it will be good for him overall plus you both are hopefully going to be having a few more quid in your pockets!!!😊. Regards to the channel I'm really glad to hear that you're sticking with it and not calling it a day. As always brother 💯% 👍and best wishes to Jacob and his own journey.
P.s you and I know what some people are like and how much of a bunch of a-holes the council can be, what I'm saying is you need to mention about Jacob's living situ being a joke or remove the remark about it from your video before someone knocks on your door. Good luck to you both from West Yorkshire ( Greg's sausage rolls still the best!!!😊).

I've got a lot of thoughts on this Karl, firstly this is clearly tough for you mate and obviously heartbreaking.
Remember mate nobody, thinks less of someone who has a go! And your lad has seen you put in the effort and show him what it takes to be a man.
I love my dad, he gave me my work ethic, my mentality my effort, he's the reason I am who I am, and I think your lad will look at you like that. You remind me if my dad! And that's the biggest compliment i could give anyone.
Your business might not be what you wanted and some would say its stalled in that sense but I'd say you'd succeeded as a father and as a friend to your son, and that's amazing.
