- Chad Election: Return to Democracy or Consolidating Junta's Rule? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Chad is holding Presidential Elections today, after three years of military rule. Chad is the first country in Africa's Sahel region coup belt to transition back to a civilian government. But are these elections legitimate? Chad is currently led by junta chief Mahamat Deby, the son of coup-leader turned president Idriss Deby. The senior Deby ruled Chad for 31 years, and his son Mahamat now wants to extend the dynasty's rule. The day Deby junior announced the election dates, soldiers killed his biggest rival, opposition leader Yaya Dillo. Deby's biggest competition at present is his own Prime Minister, Succes Masra. How legitimate will Chad's election really be?

The reason to extend the transition is because constitutionally he was not allowed to be president at that time, he was less than 40 years old. So extension happened to give him enough time to reach 40. and let him to be constitutionally allowed for presidential candidate. Of course it happened as he wished
Puppet of the French.
This is pretty interesting. I hope that whoever governs Chad 🇹🇩 will work to raise living standards for their people. And I hope that western countries (my own included) try to cooperate/collaborate with the government of Chad instead of meddling in their internal affairs.
