The graveyard is left to grow for the insects and it's not a church that gets used very often. It is still consecrated however the church is really only used by the locals for weddings, christenings and funerals they don't have a regular congregation. It's interesting though as it has a wooden floor like U.S churches and I'm used to the traditional flag stone/burial marker floors.
Thank you! Was a lovely place to stay. Lady in the post office had a great sense of humour. We will be back out soon, we are fitting out a new van at the moment.
Sad to see a field of "markers ", thought about it, and,….. They appeared to have been treated with Respect and allowed to build such a magnificent Church in such a beautiful place, if you’re a Prisoner (of War) there are far worse outcomes than that. So the markers are modest because their Headstone Is the Church. Still, a full name would have been more honorable. Thanks Chris. By showing us, they and their lives were Honored. Cheers from San Diego
Only one man tried to escape and he ruined that for the other prisoners as they were taken off the project. He wouldn't of gotten far Dartmoor is an unforgiving landscape full of swamps and Bogs and even took the lives of a small group of soldiers out on exercises. I guess it's like the sea. Vast, beautiful yet terrible? I was surprised at the amount of American history in that part of the country. One of our stops was at Plymouth Harbour where the Mayflower left England for the new world.
Very interesting as usual. I found the graves poignant. Even in death there’s neglect.

I agree a name would have been nicer. But whether they were prisoners of war or from the prison itself they were all someone’s child.
