  • The Sony A7IV has overheating issues which will cause it to shut down. In this video, I’ll talk about my experiences with the Sony a7iv and how I work around it.
I forgot to mention I was recording 4K 24p dual SD card recording, XAVC S codec and I was using USBC power along with a OEM battery

Thank you for the video! I just liked and subscribed!
    I’ll share my experience.
I just purchased a Sony a7 IV and it has overheated on me twice. The first time was an interview setting. The room was 65 F. It lasted about 12-15 minutes only!
I then did research. I changed the setting to auto shut off “high” (but that was all I knew to do).
I did another job two weeks later with another client of mine (not as forgiving as the first) but I thought I’d solved the issue. Same thing. Interviews in a 65-70 F room.
BUT I HADN’T solved the overheating issue . That workaround was not enough.
I told everyone on set to take 5 while I then routed the video to my Atomos Ninja 5” and recorded there, thus bypassing any internal recording in the Camera.
That got me thru. We rolled for an hour. It was fine after that.
My question for you is whether you were also *recording* to your external monitor or was it just for viewing?
    Thanks!

To answer your question no I was not recording to the monitor just viewing. Here is what I forgot to mention in the video of my situation. I was recording 4K 24p dual SD card recording, XAVC S codec and I was using USBC power along with an OEM battery. Hope this helps

I bought an A7iv this week and was simply navigating the menu and it turned itself off due to overheating…doesn’t fill you with a lot of confidence!

Switch to V90 SD. Ok, guys, I'm posting that comment under every video related to Sony A7IV overheating issue, because it solved the problem for me and I'd be happy if it helps you. I've browsed through dozens of videos on that subject and most of them didn't mention that particular thing.
Yes, auto power off temp works. Opening the screen and battery door works too. Eventually it allowed me to record 35 min instead of 15 min in 4K 100M 4:2:2. Better, but not perfect. External recorder, switched off linking, battery grip, etc. probably does its job as well.
But V90 SD card instead of V30 allowed me to record a 2-hour take easily. The battery exhausted earlier.
Maybe that's dumb, but having been an A7III user, I never thought the card would be such a gamechanger. In fact, yes. Slow cards just don't have enough capacity, being overheated while trying to process the recording, they overheat the camera internally even though it stays cool on the surface.
Don't bother with CFExpress, just a regular V90 128G card would do the thing. At least it worked like a charm for me. Thanks for the video! 🙌

I have researched that even A7IV and Sony A1 share the same processor, high megapixel sensor but recording times causes heating issues only in A7IV not in A1. Without any issues A7IV sometime record 30 min sometimes 40 min but don't know when it will die in extreme heat outside sunlight or desert. It is a software limit or software plus harware limit causing recoding to maximize within 30-40 min range just like A7iii record limit is fixed to 30 min. As per me sensor oversampling is not the issue. Sony mentioned heating limits in their A7IV manual but even we set the high limit inside A7IV menu, I don't know when it will die. It is a reliability issue. I think just like Canon R6, R5 Sony fixed for this model a limit. Few people are talking about this. I wish they provide a software update for heating issue or fix a reliable limit of 1 hour or 2 hour just like Nikon Z9 set it for 2 hours worry free 8K.

Thanks for your input. The oversample was just a guess but I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. I just wish it didn't happen at all
