I have a friend at a running shop, (which is dangerous financially)
went to visit him today and he had these on - when I left I had them on too. Couldn’t resist as they look amazingly good in person and feel very good- not squishy but not super hard. Upper fits glove like for me. If anything I will happily use them as casual shoes but they feel like great daily trainers at least. 4-6 mm drop is my normal sweet spot road and trail, and these seem fine in that respect.

Thank you for this review. I have been running in 4-8 mm shoes and these looked really interesting. Your review is the most thoughtful one I've seen yet.

I'm really impressed with this shoe. Holds up at high mileage and once I got the heel locked down it was really smooth. I have a handful of other Altras and this is one of my favs right now. Turnover is really good, underfoot feel is not too soft and not too stiff. My achilles has been on fire recently and running in this has alleviated that pain almost completely. I've done a couple of 20 mile runs in these and they are holding up nicely. Actually going to use these for a 50 miler in a couple of weeks.

Always wanted to try out an ALTRA love the splayed out toe design.. but enjoyed HOKAs. Now this is the mending of both worlds. ! Thanks Doc!

I just picked up a pair....agree it is a bit more snug in the toe box. Didn't love that...but I just took the insoles out and may give that a try. I do that for most of my shoes as i like the extra space. I don't love the padding on the sides of the heel....can't say if it's going to a be problem, but I definitely feel it jutting out into my foot. Just seems unnecessary to me....but will have to see how it feels when I run. Just walking around my office so far.....

Have a few marathon recovery runs in mine and really like them. I like the uper. I love the heel no matter how you land it just rolls really good, so heel strikers are going to love this. I also like the firmness of the midsole at this point. I feel like people are getting overly spoiled with all the super squisht foams on the market. Makes me wonder how on earth people ran before these have hit the market.
Can't wait to do some serious sessions in them.

The Topo comparison was apt, given that I feel like Altra has the Phantom and Hoka Clifton squarely in its sights with this shoe. Looking forward to trying a pair on, I am worried about the fit midfoot, as I"m a borderline 2E, just depends on the shoe.

Hey Matt, great review as always. Is there any way we could get a comparison to the topo phantom 3?

Looks like a solid shoe but altra has to do something about the outsole wear or else I can’t justify buying it

I get round 8-900km before they get seriously worn on most models. That's not so bad is it?

Coming from xero hfs to escalante, felt my pf sore. So maybe - cushioned 0 drop is actually a minus drop. Because the heel area sinks more than the forefoot. So thin rubber 0 drop is not the same is 2-3cm foam 0 drop. And 2-4mm is the real 0 drop, for a proper calf-achilles+ intrinsic/exterior tendons-muscles alignment and work.

If I wear a Torin 6 in 10.5 but the Torin 7 in 10, what size do you think would work for me with this shoe? It looks short like the Torin 6.

what shoe would this compare to in the topo lineup?

I don't have a problem with 0 drop shoes. I own my first pair of Altras right now and I love the fit. Not sure if I buy into an Altra with a drop. OTOH, I also enjoy Hokas, just one size bigger ;-)

I was ride or die with Altra for a long time. Then the acquisition happened and it seems like everything went downhill: design, durability, etc. Switched to Topo and haven’t looked back. I’m intrigued by the AWD, but it still seems like durability is lacking. I’ll stick with Topo until Altra’s quality is back to where it used to be.

Would have been a good purchase as a recovery/higher mileage shoe if it still had the wide toe box. Looks the same as my hoka Cliftons tbh

for your Achilles problems in the past was the only thing you did is the 3 exercises that you mentioned in the article on your website? just asking as I have always had calf problems in the past and even while doing calf exercises I get injured very easily.

Look above and below. Calf/achilles problems are rarely actually calf or achilles problems. Most likely either something in your feet, hips, or postural control. Mine was all the above 😂

Quick question is it firmer than the kinvara 14?

I'm going to go off on a rant on this shoe (pre-requisite warning)... I get Altra has different last different foot shapes etc, but it's just disappointing that I have better luck shoving my foot in an 4E Asics Nimbus 25 in the same size and having a much comfortable time in that than being comfortable both in the width of the midfoot of the shoes and also the width of the toebox (or should i say its widest point where my big toe would sit). And i get it tappers off in the nimbus to the front end of the shoe, but having a thumbs length space mitigate that for me. Anyway the volume of this shoe in the toe box isnt a lot and im pretty sure (or least it feels like it) the widest bit of the toes box is pretty much the same as my 4e Nimbus 25, i get there is a small drop (reason why i bought the shoe, for the drop and the 'foot shape', but alas I am majorly disappointed in this shoes, and I have also tried the VIA Olympus models (both of them), again, great this time the width is good, and the 0.5mm drop (plus the rocker) is what I wanted but the working volume of the toebox is not as much as again as a point of comparison the 4E Nimbus 25, anyway rant over sorry, really disappointed in both shoes, cant speak enough praise for the Asics Nimbus 25

Altra has ok ideas, but swore them off after buying a pair of Lone Peaks that was breaking apart with bare any use - we’re taking no more than 20km and that was only walking!! Shitty quality, low tech dead foam - no thanks.

Great shoe. Too bad ALTRA's outside Aesthetics or Design choices leaves less to be desirable for my taste. The one he has in his hand looks very dull and bland, lacking any striking characteristics. Maybe its the lackluster color scheme? The Asics, HOKAs, BROOKS and OC (On Cloud) look a whole lot more alluring and appealing to the eyes, . . . and wallet. ;)
