Riven main here, it is nice to hear from someone much better than me, the same thoughts that go trough my head. Many people can't get over fact that it is not season 2-3, riven is fighter, not assassin, and also fighter/tank items are pretty busted right now. So going tanky will actually allow you to do more damage, because you can be annoying for longer time. Prolonged fights are her biggest strength, you have so much mobility, shield and heals, so going in and trying to one-shot doesn't work anymore (it can, but it is risky and not necessary). Most riven mains struggle with this concept of teasing enemy and using everything mentioned as your advantage. Also, in loading screen you should think about what are you gonna do in game, split push, be the guy who kills adc and apc or just peel for your hyper carry, riven can do all of those, and yes, she is not strongest in any of those categories, but her ability to adapt and to be okay in any case is her biggest strength for me. Also, mechanics are important, but as you said, those few basic combos are all you need, there are some really hard combos that are useful maybe in 5% of the time you play or even less, and more often than not it will make you lose games, not win them. Furthermore, in my head I always have this pressure to win lane until level 3, because if I don't have advantage by then, it is gonna be hard and your only chance left is level 6. All in all, great video about my favorite champ in game

I love that even if he isn't a super mechanical player, most outplays in the video are still sick AF and masterfully use Riven's basic mechanics and limits.
Every single video of his has insane mechanics surpassing 80%of the playerbase wdym people he isnt mechanically insane with riven lmfao, what u need to do on riven to be classified as a mechanically god riven? Tf
top 20% is like platinum elo, yet he is a challenger player. Like another comment said, he is very good at using the champion and knows his limits, yes, but (or even because) he isn't playing full lethality to one tap 5 men with a triple shitcast flash combo into 10km walljump to safety.
4:55 - thats literally Adrian's Riven Double cast combo... So I kinda missed the whole point of this video, I just watched a normal riven guide with wave managment which is cool 'cause lots of players in Gold or lower elos forget that mechanics is like 10-15% of the win condition during the laning phase.

This is what I've always said, Champions like Riven, the Windshitter bros, Akali and Irelia are all champions whose mains int on them because they outplay themselves.
It's like a fancy toolbox full of all sorts of fancy, state-of-the-art tools. Sure, you have everything you'd need to tackle any situation, but if it's too complicated to use and you in your hurry for finishing the job try to rush things, things will break. What Alois does is he knows what his tools do, and he uses them in a way that's consistent and reliable, not trying any fancy tricks. I respect him for that for sure.

Gotta agree with you. Even tho i ve played a shit ton of riven i still find my self inting a lot, and many times playing worse than i did before, in the beggining. Outplaying ourselfs is really the word xD
I think his message is that
He has the mechanics of a challenger player. Not of a riven one trick. Cuz his micro is still absurdly clean.
I don't know what you guys look at in term of Riven, but I've mained Riven for some time and all the people I used to look at were all challenger, and mastered the basics unlike said in the video.
Also, it is said that AloisNL only masters 3 combo and doesn't use flashy plays, but we see him land a perfect or near perfect E 3rd Q F on 3 ennemies at some point in the video.
Moreover, it is emphasized that AloisNL thinks about Riven as a "reset" champion, which honeslty all challenger Riven player think about her. The real difficulty about Riven always have been spacing and using your kit over and over while opponents run out of cds.
I get the point of the video, which is that Riven isn't about mechanics only, she's about mastering the basics and enough mechanics to make her work (i.e necessaries combos), but I feel like the video is lying to us to a certain extent. Riven is maybe more mechanical than described (and not shown !) here, and I feel like people that are good at her know about her basics a lot more than the video make it seem.

Nah, thats what it looks like to all lower elo players. In reality its just 3 4spells with 2 to 3 autos in between. Hes not pressing 20 buttons very fast. He's just calculated and executes the basics consistently.

I'm sure you can do the same on Annie or Vex or Kassadin. No. You can't. It takes more to do those on Riven. This isn't a lower elo player thing.
Those plays are still more more mechanically harder then most champions in the entire game lol. Hence it's still very mechanic intensive even though he says "mechanics isn't important". When it is. That's why East teams always beat West teams in pro in laning phase. These mechanics to matter. Just because he isn't playing Riven at the absolute top of the top tier mechanically wise doesn't change that he is still playing it mechanically at a level better then 99.9 of the player base. What he says is just pure fucking cap.
Using flash for a good engage in teamfights or zhonyas at the perfect time has nothing to do with mechanics tho. It's game knowledge no? Or do you want to tell me ur unable to flash Q as Alistar in a teamfight? Because it's pretty much the same with flash+Q3 on Riven since holding your cursor on the target auto aims Q for Riven.
Don't get me wrong, Alois isn't mechanically bad but comparing to say oldschool Boxbox hes just "boring" to watch since he won't go for the fun flashy outplay.
Can we just stop and witness for a second the shen at 2:34 absolutely WHIFFING his dash on not only 1, but two Champs who both didn't have their dash ability activated.
To be fair, he was clearly trying to hit both of them with his E so he aimed between them, and it meant that both of them just had to sidestep in opposite directions, a bit greedy from the Shen, and well played by the Riven and Graves since realistically speaking if only one of them gets hit by the taunt, Viktor still dies there

He said in video mechanics are important, but only few basic combos. All he wants to say that there are a lot of mechanicly better riven mains who struggle with everything else and at the end of the day are lower rank than him. Of course he is still has better mechanics than majority of riven mains, but he is not highest rank because of that
It's much easier to master mechanics, if you only have to practice 3. Most riven players just practice way more and end up having to spent more time on unnecessary skills

Most of Riven's fancy mechanics are useless nowadays. The days of stylish one shot flash combos are over, she just doesn't have the damage anymore. She's locked into a single viable build almost every game (the only real question is whether or not you build maw). Hard wall hops have always been super niche use cases anyways.
Item Information is out of date in upcoming patch, with Ability Haste reduced and removed on several of Riven's items

Absolutely true that Rivens need to be aggressive level 1. Never played Riven and even I understand this, every time I go against a Riven and they're weirdly passive from the beginning, they lose.

Riven is not an "I just have good fundamentals" champion, like the video premise fundamentally doesn't work. Guy's talking about how he doesn't care about mechanics while every single clip is him Q flashing, canceling every single animation, casting 2 spells at once and avoiding every single bit of damage thrown at him with the 4 dashes his kit has at 600 average APM.
You already made a video about riste 4 years ago, the Garen onetrick who got to challenger. That's someone who can brag about not caring about mechanics because he mastered fundamentals and beats everyone on game knowledge.

the fun part about my experience playing riven couple seasons ago, is that when I started to execute a lot of different combos on Riven w/o putting to much thought, doing fast Q with my eyes closed and all that, I hated this champ, it became so boring to play her, and I dont know why.
Learning her was so much more fun than actually playing her on my main account
Half a million points later I haven't touched her in ages and ended up picking up Elite500's playstyle on a simple champ. Weird.

I understand thought and idea behind this video problem is he and probably me too since i m GM every season...we simply lost track of what is and is not mechanic. Some predictions for me are not even impressive anymore cuz i seen them and done them many times and its habit now.

Mechanics are deffinitely not overrated. Maybe champion mechanics and champion ceilings... But not mechanics overall.
There been many fights in this video where he played mechanicaly good and correct and clicked goredrinker or E at good timing. He also did multiple Q R cancel animations which is not for someone easy to do.

I really don't understand of this statement that keep saying: "How is he do that without extreme mechanics" when literally wave management, time management, rune management, and champ skills timing management LITERALLY the whole mechanics of this game?
A bit misleading. Not being the best mechanical riven player does not mean that you are not a more mechanical player than a jax sion darius cho urgot etc player. Riven takes mechanics period and also a ton of knowledge about matchups etc. She is one of the most demanding champs to learn in game.
