Why so many people hate us cyclists. Doing faster speed downhill than cars/motorcycles on 2 way open road, overtaking while doing it, knowingly pushing the limit...
Man, everyone on a vehicle, whether it has a motor in it or not, pushing the speed limits and invading the other side of the road gets the whole crap and hate on them. It's not a trend, and it's not a hate-on-cyclist thing neither. The guy who crashed could've collide an upcoming car and he could've died. And the person behind the wheel could've gone to prision, but even if not, could you ever forget the fact that you hit and killed somebody?
I did 70km/h on a mtb yesterday. I always make sure to inspect my bike before going downhill. As long as the bike feels steady I feel comfortable and nothing will happen
To reply to both of you: My bike is very well maintained and I have trust in it, it's comfortable and steady. Maybe that is the problem because I don't do 50km/h too often. My normal speed on a flat road is 30-35 km/h and up to 40 if there is tailwind or a slight decline. 50 km/h is in a situation where I encounter a downhill that's enough to bring me up to that speed and I do not pedal. If my speedometer shows more than 50, I start pulling the brakes. Pair of Tektro HD-M285 brakes provide the stopping power with 160 mm rotors.
I also like descending fast... to be honest, in the minutes before your friend's crash, you both risked more and more. Several times you had no free view in front of you. Your friend had a lot of luck to survive. In my opinion he braked too late. Concerning your overheating brakes, I probably would have tried to use the rear brake more often ,if possible, for saving the dying front brake. Maybe I would have tried to produce aerodynamic resistance with my body on straight road sections to lower the speed peaks. On the other hand... this is a great video of an an epic descent. I never climbed the Ventoux- now I can imagine, why this climb is so famous. Good luck ...Greetings-
Awesome ride, I was with you the whole way. My max is 54.3 MPH, i was in Rochester, NY. For this descent I would get Disk Brakes. I wopuld've also used that cold mountain water to cool those brake pads, or even the rims. God Bless and be safe!
Glad he wasn't badly hurt. And also glad that disc brakes are now available on all canyon road bikes. Was quite a problem to get one two years ago where the Inflite was the only one but that was the best decision to go with them ;) Maybe that's an option for you when it's time for the next bike ;)
Hello, I'm from Brazil and I watched the whole video and I was impressed with the speed achieved is really impressive, unfortunately I would not have the courage to do the same but I found it very cool, congratulations to the video and the beautiful region of your country
Disk brakes fail too. Happened to me, the hydraulic fluid boiled away on a long descent and I had a huge crash since I couldn’t slow. Never had rim brakes fail on me.
pretty impresive i love this guys i love cyclings luckily that guys is a real climber reaching a 98kmph is really terrifying but at the same time its great 2017 end of 2017 i was riding a fixed gear in philippines aurora baler reaching 95kmph it was a miracle and i was just 15 years old with my friends
I feel for him. I’ve never hit that speed, but a few days ago as I was moving about 20mph across an intersection, an SUV turned into me from the oncoming traffic (and then left me in the street). Accidents are never fun and recovery is painful.
I'm glad your friend survived. It was not fun lost control when going 98km/h. It's a beautiful descending, but I would not go faster than 85k/h anymore 'cause it's just too scary to break when higher than that speed.
I crashed at 50km/h and had my front rim damaged. The brake surface looked like a sharks teeth and my for was completely split in half. I had cuts on my knee and alot of deep wound on my side. It surprises me that your friend could still ride the bike home just fine without much wounds
That sounds bad dude!! Well he didn’t ride the bike home! His front wheel was in 2 pieces, check the video of “the complete story” of this weekend to see the aftermath from the crash!
Jasper, nice vid. Yeah, Ventoux descent gets you sur la plaque right away. Glad your bud came out Ok. I have been fortunate enough to ride that beautiful mountain twice. Second time was lucky to catch it on a not windy day but almost bought the farm on the descent through the tight twisty steep part. Was riding a rental with calipers. I ride a disc brake bike set up moto, front brake on the right(what I'm used to from moto racing days), which I had with me on the first trip. As you know, things get real hairy real quick. Went to scrub a little speed and went for the front brake, which was the rear, causing it to break loose for a split second entering the curve. Thought I was done for, but saved it though. Never did get those bibs clean, had to retire them. Can't wait to do do it again. Amazing we live to tell these stories. Morals to this one, 'no more rental bikes for me' and 'discs rule'. Safe travels. Peace
You serious? Carbon rim brake will always suffer from poor brake performance and overheating issue no matter how manufacturers improve their design. Disc on carbon is a good choice considering braking power, safety and money saving.
Great Video. I am new to road bike from MTB. I just did a 6km -9% decent last week, totally scared by the rim brake. Waiting for Aeroad Disc. Hope they will make it next year.
I can't do it anymore myself, too old. This is the first vid i've seen that shows what a real descent is like with all the shaking. Hard to see straight and feels like you're in another world.
Tried 98 km/h on Fulcrum racing speed wheels almost 10 years ago with cork brakepads. Now that was scary! luckily it was just a short very steep straight so I didn't have to do much braking. I think aluminium brake surface is still to be prefered in these very long downhill rides and I can't wait to ride in some mountains on my Dura-ace c24's!
Not sure what stubborn beginner means but basically... road bikes don't have very good breaks. You get up to speed and you're essentially a brick that can't stop. Locking up rears is also very easy and happens a lot.
ok thx for your advices :D. I don't realy trust rear brake for this reason, i prefer front braking and putting all my weight behind, i find this more effective.
+Jasper Verkuijl Hi, i cant believe that you never took any spare pads, the 1st time i hit this mountain descent it really woke me up as a rider, its not particularly technical but the road surface changes due to the weather and at 110km/h+ it can be tricky as hell with that loose grit kicked up from the cars on the edge of the road, i enjoyed the fact that our racing heroes cycled the very same road i was, great vid m8.
Glad nobody was seriously hurt! 👌 Exactly why DISC are superior to any other form of brake on a bicycle. for long high-speed descent disc brakes are the only way to go. And in fact a good hydraulic dropper post will add another layer of performance and safety by lowering CoM and aero drag. 👍 you will see this will be standard equipment in the future...
When the light catches the road, and you see it's full of huge pot-holes, and then you realise the rider is crunching over them at full tilt? Yeah nah. Not safe.
Interesting video and horrible crash, his back wheel locked up I noticed. You should contact Canyon about the brake issue, overheating is common with this wheelset (and could be avoided by braking shorter/harder so that your wheels get more time to cool down, try to avoid braking lightly over a longer period of time), yet the force coming from the brakes should be symmetrical so this is caused by the calipers. Maybe you can change your bike for one with discs ;-) Enjoy France!
@@PInk77W1 Since I changed to disk brakes 7 years ago I would never go back. Almost no maintenance you change pads and clean the rotor once in a while that's it. Works in every condition, pads auto adjust, braking power is insane you can lock your front wheel with little effort at a tarmac, no more black powder all over your bike, pads can easily last 10000km+. Yeah I guess I am over with putting my live in the hands of 2 small plastic sticks. If he had disc brakes this wouldn't happen... And to your question I've never had a problem with them ever and I ride quite a lot every year so for me they are perfect.
Well your buddy´s speed is not 98 km/h at the crash, but it makes the story more dramatic. Lucky guy! Made the same mistake descending to Malaucene, but manege to safe my bike AND my life. Ventoux is a dangerous playground.
Ouch. Brakes are touchy things, especially at speed. Anyway, at least he walked away from it. Other than that, great ride all round. I found myself leaning around the corners. Luck
Amazing footage, thanks for sharing! I have the Aeroad and get one hell of a squeal on the brakes running Zipp wheels. I wonder if it the direct mount brakes too.
I remember back in the late 80s early 90s , out on a ride with a friend we was on a down hill , we did 62mph , was a short down hill of about 1 and a half miles !
If I were to do this, I would want; a full face helmet, neck brace, hip pads, elbow, pads, knee pads, shoulder pads, the road closed, pot holes fixing, special tires and I still probably wouldn't go anywhere near that speed. You guys are fucking mental/suicidal :P
Hit 50 mph ( 80 kph) on a flat road and maintained 45 mph (72 kph) for a hundred or so yards on an old steel 10 speed back when I was a teenager in the 80's. Managed to peak at 57 mph ( 91 kph) on a steep but short hill near where I used to live. Might have been able to push more but the road wasn't long enough. Now, I'm lucky if I can reach 25mph ( 40 kph) on a flat road lol Time can be such a cruel master..
Speed, Heat, Friction, all combine to create Brake Fade! I’ve reached 110 kilometers Per Hour and crashed, was in the Hospital for 3 weeks! A car cut me off, went 300 meters off a mountain cliff, lucky to be a live! 6 months of Recovery and Rehabilitation, was training for a Road race! I use to Race Cat 1 UCI Road Cycling for 4 years!
I hit that speed many times as a teenager. Once on an old 10 speed with a warped rear rim. Also a group of us on a school trip, got ahead of the rest tucked an let it rip. T-shirts cut off no helmets doing 90-100k on school trip. Try that now...LOL Currently top speed has been 60k down a shorter steep hill, old beat up mountain bike. Think I need to revisit 100k, definitely need to tune up the ride and brakes

And the person behind the wheel could've gone to prision, but even if not, could you ever forget the fact that you hit and killed somebody?
golferchin76 Because car drivers hate anything with 2 wheels on the road while they hide in they hide in there cars
11:00 that’s why and it wasn’t even a race.

holy $h**... glad your friend is alive!
He is lucky as shit
Amazing! Thanks for taking us along.
I don't feel comfortable doing 50 km/h on my MTB on a downhill road. This is just insane, hats down!
I did 70km/h on a mtb yesterday. I always make sure to inspect my bike before going downhill. As long as the bike feels steady I feel comfortable and nothing will happen
To reply to both of you:
My bike is very well maintained and I have trust in it, it's comfortable and steady.
Pair of Tektro HD-M285 brakes provide the stopping power with 160 mm rotors.
did 80 kmh on a trek fuel ex 8
I’ve gone 75 mph…
In my car

story bro
Awesome video! This angle makes it seem so realistic. In fact I was reaching for my brakes the whole time.
I would be at the water stop when you finished.
One of best descent videos out there
and thats why I switched to discs this year. it's just peace of mind to know, that there are no melting pads or melting glue on the tubulars.
Disk brakes fail too. Happened to me, the hydraulic fluid boiled away on a long descent and I had a huge crash since I couldn’t slow. Never had rim brakes fail on me.
pretty impresive i love this guys i love cyclings
luckily that guys is a real climber
reaching a 98kmph is really terrifying but at the same time its great
2017 end of 2017
i was riding a fixed gear in philippines
aurora baler reaching 95kmph
it was a miracle and i was just 15 years old with my friends
I feel for him. I’ve never hit that speed, but a few days ago as I was moving about 20mph across an intersection, an SUV turned into me from the oncoming traffic (and then left me in the street). Accidents are never fun and recovery is painful.
Holy crap! Hope you are ok man
@@jasperverkuijl nothing broken, just a lot of bruises and scrapes. :)
I'm glad your friend survived. It was not fun lost control when going 98km/h. It's a beautiful descending, but I would not go faster than 85k/h anymore 'cause it's just too scary to break when higher than that speed.
98km/ph and survived - must be a miracle!
hello simple programmer fanboy
@@israeladesanya262 Hello :)
I think its ridiculous that 300.000 people including me want to see a human probably crashing really hard with a bike.
Peace
😂 yeah I did downhilling on a reverse brake bike once.... bad idea your muscle memory is too strong.
One mistake or mechanical failure and it's like jumping out of a moving car at 50mph.
Awesome video! Great POV....felt like I was on the bike.
using v-brakes at highspeed downhill XD
You serious? Carbon rim brake will always suffer from poor brake performance and overheating issue no matter how manufacturers improve their design. Disc on carbon is a good choice considering braking power, safety and money saving.
actually that guy spelled brake correctly
Yeah, wait until your disk system breaks on a crash or something like that. Then, we'll talk about saving money.
Or your carbon rims cracking on a crash .
true discs are better on a carbon rim. On a steel or alu rim rim brakes are fine
Great Video. I am new to road bike from MTB. I just did a 6km -9% decent last week, totally scared by the rim brake. Waiting for Aeroad Disc. Hope they will make it next year.
wowww..incredible descent, make sure wear yoour seat belt ...rock and roll
you are descending so fast man, so crazy :D nice vid !
Why can nobody spell 'brake' in 2017...???
spokest don't be an ignorant. English may not be ones first language.
break !!!
When you can brake, you break. ;)
Whoops - I meant to say "when you can't brake, you break."
@@Swampster70 you can edit that now.
Cracking descent video, had me reaching for the brakes!! Glad to see your friend was okay!...Atb Nige.
my heart stop at 11:00 , he used the rear brake?
Have you ever been on a road bike?
i'm a stubborn beginner
Not sure what stubborn beginner means but basically... road bikes don't have very good breaks. You get up to speed and you're essentially a brick that can't stop. Locking up rears is also very easy and happens a lot.
ok thx for your advices :D. I don't realy trust rear brake for this reason, i prefer front braking and putting all my weight behind, i find this more effective.
Chances are, it can be front too. I used a Right front set up.
The crash time stamp is 11:00
My like third decent ever was a steep one with a speedbreaker near the bottom
And guess who didn't see the speed bump?
This guy↖
+Jasper Verkuijl
Hi, i cant believe that you never took any spare pads, the 1st time i hit this mountain descent it really woke me up as a rider, its not particularly technical but the road surface changes due to the weather and at 110km/h+ it can be tricky as hell with that loose grit kicked up from the cars on the edge of the road, i enjoyed the fact that our racing heroes cycled the very same road i was, great vid m8.
10:58 : 98km/h, so your friend should be at 105 at least.
I think that speed is given before braking ( as u cen see, he brake to give a place for his friend ), so his friend may not ride 105 as u wrote.
What amazing video 👏👏👏👏👏👏congratulations
I wonder how a 100kph on a bicycle feels. My maximum speed is still only 63kph
Glad nobody was seriously hurt! 👌
Exactly why DISC are superior to any other form of brake on a bicycle. for long high-speed descent disc brakes are the only way to go.
Yeah nah. Not safe.
That is a real descent ! Good Job mate, didn't touch the brakes ^^

Cracked front wheel and still descending, God was with you guys
My wheel wasn’t cracked. Just got brakes.
@@jasperverkuijl Ooh I meant the other guy, thought you mentioned that :)
that's when you need disc brakes....I would have melted my carbon rims..
not so sure, Van Aert overtook Alaphillipe on rim brakes on the Poggio descent using rim brakes. Braking technique helps a lot
@@pjetrs yes but no Lol... They only use that specific bike for a little periodo of time, and never ride it again
@@pjetrs Van Aert also threw that wheelset in the trash can afterwards after he worn out the brake track.
Cuz u noob
that’s why you buy cosmic slr with exalith braking rims
this is kind of nuts.. thankfully for him everything went fine but on such a small road, with upcoming traffic, everything can go batsjit pretty fast.
When you get ready go down on that descent always have new brake pads and make sure there are very clean including the rims...
Maybe you can change your bike for one with discs ;-)
Enjoy France!
Brake pad completly melted, yet some cyylist still say there is no reason to upgrade to dics brakes. Make sense.
Well most of us dont ride 90kmh on a bicycle
Yeah because disc brakes never have a problem and are perfect.
Great video, thank-you. When I ascended in 2015 my camera mount broke so I could not record my descent down the back side.
If I were to do this, I would want; a full face helmet, neck brace, hip pads, elbow, pads, knee pads, shoulder pads, the road closed, pot holes fixing, special tires and I still probably wouldn't go anywhere near that speed. You guys are fucking mental/suicidal :P
Yeah pretty much xD
Best Dutch youtuber 🇳🇱❤️
I envy you. Mont Ventoux is my dream...
Maybe a good advertisment for the new disc brakes??
My usual speed on mountain bike is 45-50km/h flat surface, that's enough for me
lol what a load of bs
@@djdelarosa25 its not bullshit doing over 40kmh on flat on mtb is not hard for fit people
You don't get to decend exciting places every day and only live once so go for it! Just keep alert and make sure and bank nicely into the corners 😎🤙
Damn, that was a crazy ride. what an after rush that must be.
45 mph (72.42 kph) is as fast as I've ever been on my road bike. But then again I live in FL. No such mountains.
Now, I'm lucky if I can reach 25mph ( 40 kph) on a flat road lol
Time can be such a cruel master..
i only got half way through the video and had to change my underpants! wtf

I use to Race Cat 1 UCI Road Cycling for 4 years!
beautiful descending.
I hit that speed many times as a teenager. Once on an old 10 speed with a warped rear rim. Also a group of us on a school trip, got ahead of the rest tucked an let it rip. T-shirts cut off no helmets doing 90-100k on school trip. Try that now...LOL
Currently top speed has been 60k down a shorter steep hill, old beat up mountain bike. Think I need to revisit 100k, definitely need to tune up the ride and brakes
I crash too month ago my speed is around 60-80 kph without helmet and i have only wounds
Probably My luckiest day
Me I just crash 2 weeks ago at a 45km down hill on a road bike now my right flank of my leg is opened fracture
Please wear a helmet
Why did you stay in the drops after your brake melted? Seems like a less aero position would've helped slow you a bit.
Fastest i ever got was 95 kph on my old Cannondale CAAD 7 with Mavic Ksyrium SSL wheels.
