Forget about supercars - it’s time for a pick-up truck drag race!!
We’ve got our hands on the new Ford Ranger Raptor, and it’s going head-to-head against the new VW Amarok and Toyota GR Sport Hilux!
So let’s see how these three compare. Starting with the Amarok, it’s powered by a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel engine that can produce 240hp and 600Nm. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at just under 2,300kg. If you’re looking to pick up this exact model, it’ll set you back around £57,000.
Alongside it we have the Ford. It has the same size engine under the bonnet as the Amarok, and it puts down 292hp and 491Nm. Its power is also sent to all four wheels via a 10-speed gearbox, but it’s both slightly heavier and more expensive than the VW, coming in at 2,454kg and £59,500 respectively.
Finally we have the Toyota. It’s packing a 2.8-litre 4 cylinder turbo Diesel engine under the bonnet, which can produce 204hp and 500Nm. It’s also equipped with four wheel drive, although the gearbox is only a 6-speed automatic! It’s the lightest car here though, tipping the scales at 2,125kg, and it’s also the cheapest, coming in at £48,600.
So will it be an easy win for the Ford? Or could the Amarok or Hilux snatch it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Raptor is king. Here in South Africa 🇿🇦 our Raptor has 392hp though. Big increase over the EU version.
That's a ranger raptor. The one your talking about is a full on raptor. Not a ranger raptor

The F150 raptor has 450 hp on the V6 Twinturbo and 700hp on the V8 Supercharged.

2 years ago, the Amarock did 1/4 mile in 16.5 secs. They don't care about speed obviously.

The race was not about aging but speed this time
As a 2023 Raptor owner:
1. This is the neutered version of the Raptor for the EU: 292 hp. and 460Nm. The normal Raptor version for the rest of the world is 405hp. and 580Nm. This motor can make up to 452 hp. and 580 Nm ... imagine!
2. On this test is the first Raptor series for 2022. For 2023 Ford fixed the brakes and from 39m-100km/h they are now around 36m-100km/h.
And all of them are completely crushed by the Raptor R with 700 hp.

These are all perfect small pick ups, i'd be so happy with any of the three.
We need to see a face-off between the old generation V6 Amarok and the new one. Same goes for the Ranger Raptor. Just to see where technology has improved, obviously the new Raptor is going to make the others look like they're searching for parking, but would still be a good race between the rest
The last generation Amarok V6 would win easily against the new one, it did 16.5s in other carwow dragraces. Engine-wise it was a downgrade for the amarok going from the VW V6 to the Ford V6. I guess it would give this Raptor a run for its money actually.
totally agree, the ford v6 is so much slower, and it has quite a bad a history in its range rover times
I live in Argentina and the new hilux gr sport has got that same 2.8 diesel but with 224 hp now. That should make it closer with the amarok

The Toyota Hilux "S" mode is not sports mode but instead it's a Sequential mode for the transmission. That's why it won't change to the gear you wanted to but it will lock the gear range like if you put it in S4 it will only shift "1,2,3 and 4".

03:26 the first car I ever drifted was my mum's 2007 Toyota Hilux Raider twin cab. Granted it was the 2×4 version and that 3.0 D4D engine had so much torque it was easy to get the wheels to slip. Fun times.
First car i ever drifted my parents’ Land Cruiser Prado with that same 3.0 D4-D engine. However only in the snow since its always 4WD😅

I enjoy your work, Matt - reviews and drag races alike. As an older American who has used pickup trucks for actual work* with load beds that are functional (bed height people!), these trucks really are car culture in full cartoon mode. It’s not a new trend; I recall thinking years ago that the Matchboxes & Hot Wheels of my childhood had come to life. Sam’s channeling of what his wife might really think speaks a fine truth. 😂
*For most job site work, a box truck/white van is a superior alternative. At this point, I can only think it’s some form of mass delusion that keeps pickups at the forefront of American “work culture”. (Although… 🤔. My HVAC contractor in the US has a sweet buildout of his pickup with locked tool boxes along each side of a full size bed. It’s like a van turned inside-out.)
I foresee an offroad challenge episode coming really soon between these 3 pickups. Dirty tires are a giveaway on Carwow.

My ranger raptor was built a few weeks ago now waiting for shipping. It’s the correct torque spec he mentioned for Australia 583nm and we get a lot more power here too at 397hp. 5.- second 0-100 Ute 👌🏻
also the amarok is only slower becuase it has the ford 10 speed which is clamied to be more economical

@thedarkrider2869 Not the case when you think about the fact that the Ranger Raptor is actually detuned in this version, EU emissions and all that restrict the Raptor of it's full potential. In every other part of the world where the Rator exists it's more or less 400 hp, it would smoke these any of these trucks more than it already has

The Hilux in NZ is kinda weird with its specs for the GR, and SR5 Cruiser (model below GR).
SR5 Cruiser has disc rear brakes - but the GR does not. Weird for the more sporty one to still have drums...
Also Toyota still uses 4 pot calipers on the front! Vs 2 pot sliding calipers like the competing utes.
That raptor is awesome, would definitely be my pick of the three!

583Nm @ 3,500 rpm
So, at 1kW=1,341 bhp, that is 392bhp

I have a cool idea for a drag race which I don’t think has done before grab all the fastest cars from each class, hatchback, saloon, estate, sports, super, suv etc and put them all up against each other not so much for the winner but it would be interesting to see the performance differences between the fastest from each class of car and particularly the brake test that would be very interesting to see which wins that

Interesting that the HiLux GR-Sport in the UK has the same power and torque outputs as the normal HiLux variants. In Australia, the GR-Sport will have 165kW (221bhp) and 550Nm.
I thought GR models were supposed to have more power like Honda's Type R vehicles.

In South Africa the GR hilux also has 15KW more than the standard Hilux. Both the Raptor and Hilux are detuned in Europe. Sucks for them.

So glad I live in Australia the Raptor is hamstrung so much it crawls compared to our version and what did you do to that Amarock it is crawler also. The Raptor does the 1/4 mile in 14.6 and the ranger wildtrak v6 in 16.5 the Hilux rouge in 17.8

11:14 - I think Toyota has been quietly building in a "sport" mode into their truck transmissions since the 2005 Tacoma 5 speed auto. I had the 2011 Tacoma V6 OR (which didn't have an manual mode, but it had selectable gears) and I swear simply putting the shifter into 4th would cause the transmission to shift quicker at the optimal shift point for performance rather than fuel economy. It was a banshee. I now have a 2020 4Runner with pretty much the same transmission and sister engine...it has pretty similar behavior, although it was more pronounced in the truck since there is more low end torque. It would be great for someone to do a formal test on Toyota trucks to see if there are any unpublished performance behaviors.

In the recent Amarok review vlog, I put forward a request to have Mat put these 3 against each other, glad to see he took it up.
Amarok has 18bhp more than Ranger Raptor although 27kgs heavier.

Everyone I’ve seen who drives the Raptor loves it. Shame it’s down on power compared to other parts of the world, but I’m sure a simple ECU tune would change that. Sounds pretty awesome too.
I detailed one recently and it sounds very good for what it is. I just wish Ford would sell the F150 Raptor R in the UK.
I'm not sure if it's a mistake by the guys or it's down-tuned in the UK, but in Australia, the Raptor does produce 583 Nm of torque.

The Hilux here in the Philippines has Power mode, I hope they put it in that (if available)
Power mode makes no difference at all to the engine power. It makes 40% pedal = 100% throttle

The Hilux is fascinating as an American. The V6 version in Australia is interesting, as is the slightly higher HP South African/Kenyan GR Safari version. We settle for the Taco tho, in all its glory :)

I'm surprised that the GR hilux dont have more power then standard. Australian version GR Hilux has the same 2.8 engine that was tuned to have a little more HP and torque. But then different countries have different spec of the same car.
Well, it's just Toyota Hilux with GR Sport body kit, not a different car developed by Gazoo Racing (like GR Yaris, GR Corolla, etc). That's why the "GR" is placed behind the name, not in the front

We just bought the Walkinshaw Amarok from the last generation, because we wanted the German drive train.
It’s the performance oriented Amarok and by George it goes, for a Ute anyway.

@@davidcori2440 It’s commonly known that the next generation of Ford Ranger has been the worst launch of any vehicle in Ford Australia’s history, engine failures across the range, differential failures, transmission failures, software issues, wiring harness, suspension components (front lower ball joints departing the control arms) steering column support bracket welds breaking, SRS system faults, just to name. a few🤣 Ford has has to buy back record amounts of vehicles back from customers. Just jump on any customer forums and see for yourself.
