You can’t build a bike without staring at it for hours, its part of the build process👌

Hi, come back to the build Christal, you'll never regret it. Im 55 years old a I do it as a hobby/ therapy too and I love to see things when are finished and enjoy it and more when it took a long time of thinking and building. All the best !!! Gus

Honest and true. I never build bikes for others. I've tried and...well, I'm not doing it again. What was agreed upon upfront changes during the process. So to this film of yours, all I can say is Amen! Spending hours just looking. Thinking and planning. Many things tried out ending in the bin.
In this case, the seat. I would have done the not-diamond-part at the rear instead of the front. But that's me! And that shows what you say in the film, that if I were your "customer" we would disagree. And who should pay for the "mistake"?
Building bikes for recreation (a very good word for this!) will not go hand in hand with money or a customer who don't know that much about the process (hence they are a customer) It's only creating worries and mistakes. Stay away!
    Thank you Dan! Cheers!

Yes mate you are 100% right and the reason we went the front instead of the back is because Is more unique and less like every other seat others build or what you can purchase on the market. Im not saying I wont ever build a bike for someone again I just wanted to show the downside to this. This is not a paid job for me, It's costing Crystal only the parts we use on her bike.

So much time sitting, staring at the motorcycle. I use to think it was wasted time, and it took me a while to realize that's when I come up with my best ideas and solutions for the build. It also cuts back on the number of times I have to do something over because I dont like the look or functionality of something I just didnt put enough thought in too. Thanks for the video my friend!

Definitely not alone! I think any creator who enjoys their craft spends almost as much time staring and envisioning what the final product should look like. Then, on the flip side, staring at your completed project either in awe or mentally disecting everything you think you could have done differently or better. At least thats me every damn time! 😂
Bravo, though! You are an amazing builder and share your knowledge with us novices, which is priceless! THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES!

The seat looks awesome Dan. The bike needs to be finished before/if Crystal goes no doubt about it. I sit looking at my bike build for hours on end only to end up wishing you pop round and help me. My bike build was and still is a form of therapy, it helped me get out of a dark hole and gave me a reason to focus on something else.Keep up the great work Dan.

I am currently turning many boxes of motorcycle parts back into a 1975 Triumph T140. I am one of those who ponders and looks. Sometimes a solution to a roadblock is easy, sometimes it just takes time to figure out a suitable and engineeringly pleasing fix. On frustration. Some years ago I was asked to rescue a BSA A65 Lightning which had been under a tarp for a long time. The customer had very little spare cash and the bike was utterly worn out and knackered so everything needed work. With the exception of the paint, I did absolutely everything myself and visited auto jumble after jumble for good used parts as new parts were out of the customers price range. Nine months solid work later I rode the bike into a car park at the customers work and his only comment was.... "nice paint"!

As far as the seats go, do people ever complain about not having a back rest on the cafe style racer seat?! I have a le pera and man do I need a higher flat back rest! Anyway, awesome video, Brother! You're absolutely right. Sometimes, you can sit and stare and go over ideas as far as the next task for the bike! Never rush the artist!

I wish I could have seen this before statrting my café racer project..
tI´ve "bult" a bunch of roadracing bikes, but that i mostly replaicing part for better ones, a custom bike build is very different.
You spend hours looking at the bike to solve a problem or making a part fit as nicely as possible.
After you got that one part just right and in place, you discover that it now occupies the space needed for the next part....
Just finding the right clip on handlebars that will fit within the cut out of the fairing without clashing with the instruments is a challange.
I´m very close to complete my VTR1000F care racer inspired bike, but it ha taken, as you say, about 3 times longer then planned.
Doing it with just hand tools have limited what I can do, but visually it looks nowhere close to a standard VTR1000, so I´m happy with it, for now at keast.
I like how you think about the worst critic which is yourself, and at the moment I only see the flaws that could have been done better, but I´ll take your advice and let others tell me what´s good or bad about the bike--+

Hi there, nice builds, staring at your build and envisioning it, go´s with the process of a (good) build (any build).
The mistake often made (in my opinion) is building a bike on a table.
Offcourse it works easier, but the view on your future project is not the one that you will have when standing next to it.
Allso "size matters", you have small and big riders, slim ones and some are not slim at all.......
Some (big) riders, look horrible on some bikes/caferacers, allway fit the bike with/to the customer, than you are a bike builder ( this is no criticism of your work !)
When building a expensive seat, it should be flush with the gasoline tank.
If there is a welding edge visible from the tank when the seat is mounted, i would take that off....... ; ) keep hammering.....

Do I stare at my bike for hours??? Yes absolutely. I mock things up temporarily, sit on the bike, feel how it feels, tear it apart, make changes, put it back together and do it all over again until I’m happy with it. I’m currently working on a bike that will be my wife’s first bike and I’ve done this a half dozen times and I’m not even half way there.
The bike to be spoken of: 1982 Kawasaki KZ 750 that I’m doing up as what I call a “Bratty Scrambler”… kind of a dual sport-esk sort of brat with a flat seat, moto style bars with risers, 70/30 tires… Yet trying to retain the stock body panels at the same time with modern electronics.

I'd say 80% of a build is just staring and planning. I just finished building a road legal mini cafe racer with a 2013 cbr250r engine swap. I have a short video on my yt

My son and I were involved in making custom car parts. Top end cars or high performance vehicles so people with disposable income. Some were OK but the majority were a pain in the ar$e. Never happy. The nature of the materials meant a high scrappage rate. What's more there was always someone in China willing to make parts cheaper out of 'chinesium'. Even had some ar$eholes ask to repair chinesium parts. The result, my son is working in art and making more money for lovely people who appreciate skill and creativity.

Like the seat except it would’ve looked 100 times better in grain or distresses leather. Just my two cents😊
