Love the look of the new tank . 40 year old and still perfect gotta love these places with NOS . Crystal's bikes coming on nicely . Thanks for the video Dan
Mate, I have no idea if you hesitated before posting this or not, but I always appreciate when people on UA-cam post videos of failures or things that haven't gone well. To me it shows me the true professionals, because they have learned from their mistakes. I love being able to find out how to improve processes, and often that learning comes through mistakes. Thank you for your honesty and showing this, I love all of your content!
What happened with your old tank is that there was a small leak somewhere and fuel got under the paint and lifted it, sealing is good, the tank on one of my CM450 when i got it had 17 pinholes and leaked like a sieve, i cleaned out the tank and found all the pin holes, then I sanded around the holes, i then dimpled them in with a small ball peen hammer and soldered up all the holes till i was sure there were no more leaks, with the tank cleaned out i coated the interior with a coat of fibreglass resin, 4 years on not a trace of a leak.
This is exactly why you must pressure test every tank before paint. even brand new ones. use air compressor, and spray bottle with soapy water. even the smallest pinhole will make bubbles, which you can address with the welder.
Also some tanks have petcocks that fit direct to the tank (my Suzuki GT380 for one) so you have to make sure there is no paint on this contact area or it will lift, don't ask mw how I know! Pity about your tank, I really liked the green.
I used Swish toilet bowl cleaner in my tank. Completely rusted to spotless in two minutes. Rinse with water, then rinse with methyl hydrate, then swish some two-stroke oil all around.
I've been using VHT high heat and then baking it in the oven (if it's metal parts). I've had good luck with it, but for plastic stuff I still don't have a good way xD
Really sorry to see that happen on your green tank. I wasn't sure if it was going to be a rust issue at first or if it was going to be a scenario where you decided not to put rubber mounts on and a piece of metal rubbed through the tank. I have a kit of the KBS tank sealer waiting to go into a NT650 tank my own self. I hope you decide to do a video on the process. I know MDmotorcycle repair did one recently but I just feel there are too many other hack jobs out and it would be far better to broadcast the way to do it with a good kit. The new tank does look really nice though, and maybe a little slimmer overall. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
When the tank sealant is mixed and applied it causes a chemical reaction, this has a side effect of heat during the reaction like fibreglassing and fillers. Did it get hot enough to affect paint. I'm asking as I've acquired a 40 year old moto guzzi monza 500 and the tank needs treating but the paint is very good, that's why I asked.
Hello, I'm sorry your tank paint job failed. I thoroughly enjoyed the original paint video. I love that color Green and kinda want to do something similar with my Harley 48. What paint/color did you use?
Hmm...looks like a petrol leak to me. Fumes crawling under the paint looks like that. The sealent should take care of that! Yes, CMSNL is a goldmine! You have become quite skillfull with that welder! Weld done! 🙂
Is the Tank Sealant that you used resistant to Ethanol? The older formulations are badly affected by the increasing levels of ethanol used in the latest Petrol/Gasoline grades that are in use. The tank also needs to be protected from the water that is attracted into the fuel when ethanol is present. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
This is one of the best tank sealers on the market, it holds up for many many years. In fact, I don’t even know of anyone who has said it’s peeled back unless they didn’t apply properly. It’s ridiculously strong and resistant to almost anything. If you’re concerned, I would definitely send them an email and ask them you’re welcome to tell them you saw my video if you want
Hey mate I don’t know what groups they are exactly I think I found these on eBay to be exact so there aren’t any specific brand. Yes I’ve had to put shorter cables in
Dang! Sorry to see that tank like that. That was a lot of work gone down the drain. We just sealed our first 2 tanks. I followed the instructions to the T, but I still worry. Lol.
That didn't look like a rust problem that caused that paint to bubble up. Rust doesn't do that. Looks like it could have been a possible primer/etching issue or other chemical reaction.
I think that your problem may have been the fact that the tank could have had pinholes through it. Maybe from where you ground off that badge mounting bracket. That looked really gnarled underneath it. I bought a CB750 that had a beautiful tank made by Steve carpenter, but the guy I bought it from left gas I. It for so long that it rusted horrifically bad inside, to the point that it rusted pin holes all the way through , and did exactly what happened to your tank. My dad had a 450 nighthawk tank he was trying to save that was really bad inside. He had utilized so many chemicals that it put pinholes through the tank and made the metal not much thicker than tin foil. It never panned out. The only tank sealer thh he at I’ve never once heard anyone say anything bad about is “CASSWELL” I’ve been told that other products won’t even hold up to gas with any % of ethanol. I don’t trust sealers one damn bit. Sooner than later, they all go sideways, and when they do it is basically not something that can be fixed or is worth attempting to fix.
I agree, the paint separated because gas got in between the tank and the paint and the only way that happens is cuz there's a hole under the paint where gas is leaking. It is most likely to be at the bottom weld seam where the gas would be pooling. Happened to me once when I was evaporusting a tank, the seam was so rusted in a certain spot the evapo ate a pinhole right through. I also dont trust creamers, always hearing about the nightmares its can cause.
Love the look of the new tank . 40 year old and still perfect gotta love these places with NOS . Crystal's bikes coming on nicely . Thanks for the video Dan
Thanks mate, yes it does blow my mind how old the tank is and still like new :)

I really like that new/old tank. I think it looks awesome.
Thank you mate yep it definitely suit the bike 😊

That’s awesome well done 👍 it’s worth taking your time with things like this so it doesn’t come back to haunt you
The aluminium forming for the seat base looked awesome. 👍
Thank you mate I actually enjoy doing it too :)

That’s a different approach but as long as it works
I've been using VHT high heat and then baking it in the oven (if it's metal parts). I've had good luck with it, but for plastic stuff I still don't have a good way xD
I LOVE the look of the Honda tank! 👍🏽

Thank you mate and Yes I will be doing a how to video very soon so stay tuned
I always look forward to seeing them in Japan.
Nice video Dan , that new tank looks super sweet mate. Ride safe, Cheers
That NOS tank brought the bike from "woah thats a cool build" to "wait, what original model is this awesome scrambler i have never seen?"
That’s so true and I thought the same thing too 😊
Impressive work you do. I remember watching the green tank videos some time ago. Too bad on that tank but the NOS tank looks really great.
When the tank sealant is mixed and applied it causes a chemical reaction, this has a side effect of heat during the reaction like fibreglassing and fillers. Did it get hot enough to affect paint. The new one looks good, but I am honestly more partial to the custom tank that you did.
Hello, I'm sorry your tank paint job failed. I thoroughly enjoyed the original paint video. I love that color Green and kinda want to do something similar with my Harley 48. What paint/color did you use?
4:25 that really is crazy how that happened
This tank is so much nicer
Have you used Pro 15 ? The stuff is really good. I used it on my CB550 tank, 2 years in, and still perfect.
I think i like the dark blue tank on the ("my") CX even better!
Where is Crystal today???
Greetings from Croatia!
Yes the blue tank does look good on your bike, Crystal is away but will be back very soon
Another Great video! Thanks Dan, keep them coming,
Thank you mate, will do
Hmm...looks like a petrol leak to me. Fumes crawling under the paint looks like that. The sealent should take care of that! Yes, CMSNL is a goldmine!

Thank you mate yep you are right on all of those points 🙏

What grips are those on the green bike at 3:58? Also, did you have to get shorter throttle cables?
Hey mate I don’t know what groups they are exactly I think I found these on eBay to be exact so there aren’t any specific brand. Yes I’ve had to put shorter cables in
Dang! Sorry to see that tank like that. That was a lot of work gone down the drain. We just sealed our first 2 tanks. I followed the instructions to the T, but I still worry. Lol.
Thank you so much mate yeah it’s definitely worth doing, I’m learning the hard way. Lol 😂
Bloody good, fella.
hey man can you do a video on the main wiring harness I got the same 93 nighthawk and the wire's man the wire's
I have the same problem also I tried to look for the wire diagram but couldn't find it 😫😫
Thanks for the advice 🤠🐕🦺🏍👍🏻
An original tank on a modified build. Mmmmm "I LIKE IT".
Hope your not rained out, take care m8 : )
How cool does it look 😮 yes it’s very wet but not floating yet lol
Geez. What did that NOS tank run you?
That didn't look like a rust problem that caused that paint to bubble up. Rust doesn't do that.
Looks like it could have been a possible primer/etching issue or other chemical reaction.
Does the tank sealer get hot enough to peel the paint?
I’m not sure what you mean
Reading the comments while watching the video made me think you were installing a nitrous system to the bike, i almost thought you went crazy
Haha 😂 not exactly
New Old Stock - NOS
Karma for using Chinese shocks 😅😂🤣
Probably haha 😂

Fuck I hate it when tanks delaminate
OEM tank is way nicer imo.
