The part that tickles me is that, she was actually surprised. Wonder why in a way. She had won everything leading up to the Oscars. The Globe, BAFTA, all of the top critics awards at the time NY, LA, National Board of Review and National Society of Film Critics. What's interesting is that the very next year Holly Hunter did the exact same thing for The Piano, besting Emma for another brilliant performance in The Remains of The Day. Then, two years later, Emma almost pulled it off again with her very last Best Actress nomination, for Sense and Sensibility. She did win another Oscar, this time for Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility, and who gave it out? No other than Anthony Hopkins again.
I think she was surprised because she was relatively new to the movie business, and especially new to Hollywood, this was her first time at the Award season. And even if she won everything before this evening, this is the Oscars. It must have been overwhelming.
Emma Thompson was amazing in this film. This movie rocks.
Well deserved. A fantastic film from a fantastic novel, one of the classics of the twentieth century.
The snubs: repulsion and Belle jeur
Catherine Deneuve's performance in Indonchine stayed with me for a long time. I would've preferred giving her the Oscar that year.

Such a great speach.
Emma Thompson greatest actress
Michelle Pfeiffer should have been nominated for BATMAN RETURNS this year!!!
Regina Torne and Sharon Stone shouldve nominated for like water for chocolate and Basic Insict
I agree though Regima Torne in Supporting.
Why did anthony hopkins present the award for best actress in a leading role?
I love Emma Thompson but I never understood why almost everybody loved that movie.
Susan Sarandon should have won ):
That was a devastating performance…
