    Loved seeing this ex-South African Railways garratt in operation. We still have a few of these NG/G16 locos which are operational in preservation in South Africa. But the condition that these Welsh Highland Railway locos are kept in is stunning. If I ever go to Wales I will definitely check them out.

    Will, you want a boat? Don't. It's so...just so...expensive. It's more expensive than your house and all the trains put together, unless you get a little dingy. Other than that, beautiful video. Great, great great video. Looks like an amazing locomotive and railway. I can't wait for smell-a-vision to see what you could smell and see and hear even better. Gotta love trains.

    That was a fairlie good video [festiniog railway pun] !! in all seriousness great video will, and very informative, you are right about the loco coming all the way from South Africa (they have three operational on the WHR and two large 2-8-2 tender engines under restoration), built by Beyer-Peacock in Manchester. Models of it in OO scale/ 4mm scale are avaliable from Backwoods Miniatures but I don't know if they have them in stock at the moment and will be very expensive RTR as they are usually sold as kits which are notoriously complicated to build!! time for part 2! cheers James. P.s. it's 24 miles long!

    Thanks for posting this video which really captures an amazing railway and reminds me of my visits. I went August 2014 for the third time and this time the railway was open all the way to Porthmadog, whereas before they were still constructing bits of the line. £35 for four hours train travel is not too bad and children under 16 go free. This is the best heritage railway in the UK without doubt.

    The original line started at Dinas Junction. I'm guessing that the re-opened line uses the standard gauge trackbed of the BR Afon Wen-Caernarfon-Bangor line to reach Caernarfon, looking at the footpath/cycleway alongside as you left Caernarfon. It was orginally proposed to build a further line through the mountains using Swiss style electric traction, but the money ran out. A stunning line which I really must visit soon. Thanks for the upload and as always your entertaining and amusing commentary!

    Hey I'm sure that there are some oo gauge Bayer Garrets (probably not spelt it right) but those are standard gauge but If you want a model of the narrow gauge version you may have to increase the size of the gauge to 32mm gauge which are made by accucraft (live steam) but some are now discontinued but you could still find some at secondhand places online :)

    hello IC82. Heljan actually have made a LMS garret model. It is a model that hattons have requested from them. If you can get one they are stunning in looks and power. However, If you are looking for a model of ng143, aristocraft make one in 16mm.

    23:53 bud, you don't know close until you take the Tennessee Valley Railroad's Missionary Ridge Local that goes into a pre-civil war era tunnel. I'd say that from the window if the coach to the wall the distance is roughly six inches.
    If you ever decide to come to the States there are two railroads (that I've been to) that I highly recommend. One is Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania, the other Tennessee Valley Railroad in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Especially since Southern 4501's restoration is nearly complete.

      I've been to... Three railroads, as far as I remember... I've been to Strasburg, New Hope & Ivyland, and I've been to the Valley Railroad in Essex, CT... Also, my friend who works at my local railroad museum, the Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI) is restoring a narrow gauge HK Porter... Really cool stuff... Those are all places I recommend... And, RMLI, although small, has a LOT of projects, including Steam Up LIRR 39... Have you heard of the program?

    • @TerminalSports45
      @TerminalSports45 10 років тому

      looks like a Pennsylvania K4 class pacific, there's also a couple of trust funds to rebuild extinct locomotives, such as a group in Buffalo New York to rebuild a J1 class Hudson type (Baltic if you go by British terms, and they should have chosen the J3 because of some parts on the J1 class that are now illegal apparently) and a group in Pennsylvania to rebuild a T1 duplex

    • @That_One_Guy_In_A_Band
      @That_One_Guy_In_A_Band 10 років тому

      Sethcrawford21 Well, LIRR 39 IS actually a Juniata built G5s 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler... So, yeah, she resembles the K4s Pacific... An extinct locomotive I want to bring back is the Milwaukee Road class F7 4-6-4 Baltic (On "The Road" They called 4-6-4 loco motives Baltics... Weird)

      We do have clearances of 6" in places - on the Ffestiniog Railway things get very tight due to carriages gradually getting bigger to the full extent of the loading gauge which has increased slightly during the preservation era - the Welsh Highland locos and stock are significantly larger than Ffestiniog due to a more generous loading gauge, the historic Welsh Highland had more room than the Ffestiniog to begin with and it has been increased further to allow the South African stock. As a result we cannot run WHR trains onto the FR apart from a mile or so to the workshops/carriage shed at Boston Lodge, but we can of course fun an FR train on the WHR and have done a few special runs with a single train along the entire combined railways (40 miles). Plans have been mooted in the past to enlarge the loading gauge of the FR to fit WHR trains and aside from one difficult location it would be pretty possible, but we'd lose the unique character of the old FR - and after all as the world's first ever narrow gauge railway (with the first NG locos and stock still in occasional use to this day) - it would be a step too far. :)

    Accucraft made a Live Steam model of the WHR Garratts in 16mm scale. Sadly discontinued, and rare, though beautiful models. They go for £3000+ on eBay etc when they do show up. They may be available in 4mm 009 scale (OO scale but N gauge track) for much less, but the detail and realism are inferior to the 16mm version.
