Never had a pleco get stuck in cholla wood, but I quit using it because it gets messy. I like a little mulm in my tanks but the cholla wood seems like it rapidly turns into mulm to the point I need to vacuum some out. Id recommend that if you use Cholla, you choose some thicker pieces that aren't gonna break apart as easily.... Also you can get cholla wood without the holes if you dont get it from a pet store... Pet stores only stock cholla with holes cause thats what sells as decorations the best.
