In the 90's i believe the scene was overally much more open to originality and experiments and the games were more creative and varied. Then that creativity fell radically and the genre became focused on permanent refinements of the same formula. Not only that but games are looking a bit more similar to each other.
@@carlosaugusto9821 totally agreed. I'd blame the audience more than the creativity of the developers though; all the content creators love to performatively state that they're against esportsification, but they still constantly demand that every game be whittled down to a frame data contest in a featureless rectangle and nothing else. every new idea is "degenerate" and "killing a generation of players", and then they act surprised when stagnation happens.
I would love to see a World Heroes Team in The King of Fighters There is a rumour that the original SNK wanted a WH Team in their big crossover, composed by Hanzo, Fuuma and Janne/Jeanne They asked ADK for permission but they said no. And that is why SNK had to make the American Sports Team Now that SNK owns ADK's franchises, would love to see an World Heroes Team (composed by Hanzo, Ryoko and Janne/Janne), an Aggressors of Dark Kombat Team (composed by Fuuma, Kisarah, Joe) and seeing Ninja Master's characters in Samurai Shodown (like Karasu, Sasuke, Natsume, Kasumi)
If that's true then it's a tragic fate for the franchise and for ADK. Because KOF would soon become a monster that beat all other Neogeo games in popularity... meanwhile while WH died in 95, not even getting the chance of a sequel like SFA, FF3, AOF3, etc, those big evolutions in gameplay and graphics. KOF helped to revive and redefine the image of old SNK franchises that were already obscure to some players in the 90s like Psycho Soldiers and Ikari Warriors, and later on it became a platform to preserve FF and AOF. Like SF preserved the image of Final Fight, MvC preserved the image of Morrigan and others from DS, and SSB preserved the image of Nintendo franchises that are either forgotten or get rare releases. So it's crazy to think that the same would happen to WH if ADK had accepted the offer. WH would be immortalized in a big fg franchise.
