- The Peak Tram is a funicular railway in Hong Kong, which carries both tourists and residents to the upper levels of Hong Kong Island. Running from Garden Road Admiralty to Victoria Peak via the Mid-Levels, it provides the most direct route and offers good views over the harbour and skyscrapers of Hong Kong. Operated since 1888, it was the first funicular railway in Asia.
The line has a stately, scenic and varied history, having been in operation for more than 130 years.
From 2022, the sixth generation of new tram car will be introduced, with large windows that extend to the ceiling and front-view seats that allow passengers to enjoy the view from Victoria Peak, the highest point in Hong Kong, from their seats.

3:28 This is called the (Carl Roman) Abt switch, and the peak trams uses double flanges on one wheel and no flanges on the other wheel to cross this switch without derailing. It is unique to funicular railways!
I was wondering how it didn't derail. Thanks for the explaination.
Thank you! I _was_ curious about that unusual looking switch. Such a simple yet clever solution! And it means zero moving parts on the switch itself, so less maintenance too! (which is handy, considering how difficult and expensive it must be to work on such railway lines) - I did have to look up some images on Google to _really_ get a sense of what you said - I do better with visual aids - but again thank you for the explanation because I was fascinated, clueless and _so_ confused over it! 😁
This comment should be pinned.
I did notice that - Many thanks for the info 👍🏻
Ah! That explains why there was a part of the track with three rails. It was to give continuity to the double flanged wheel. (I learned something new today.)
This was beautifully shot and edited, giving us a great trip. So different from my first trip in 1960!
I rode this tram in 1967. Amazed at the changes and glad to see some of the old infrastructure.
I rode this railway in 1997, just two months before the handover. Thanks for this great video, it brings back memories of a good trip!
The bus ride from the peak is great especially on the upper deck
Thank you for this video. And also for this short cab ride to the peak in Hong Kong.
SUPER VIDEO!!!!!
Thank you very much, the last time I was there was in 1979. Changed quite a bit since then. 🏳🌈
Amazing. Love the nature sounds. The day and night footage.
Its crowded even at night! :D
I always love waking up and being teleported to somewhere else when I am watching your video. So amazing and cool. 😎😎😎
I rode this in 1957 & my Dad shot the trip on a 16mm Pillard Bolex movie camera & I still have that on CD today.
Good video! A very interesting funicular railway with quite a long track!
Спасибо за путешествие! Очень интересно.
I used to live in the mid-levels below the Peak, in the early 1970's. Rode the Peak tram quite a few times.
What a long cable car! I didn't notice such a wonderful train was there when I visited HongKong!
What a nice ride, and beautiful night view from the top!
Nice new tram , i will have to go back one day and have a ride . It looked easy to get a ride but it's usually very hard to find the right time when it's not overcrowded :-(
山頂看夜景不錯~
Pristine train , beautiful ride. Thanks for sharing ❣️🚂💨
On my first ride back in 1988 the trams were small one car affairs. Nicer than the current larger sets.
Nice to get the ride before the rush hour and the crowds! Beautiful night shots, and it does show that cable car operation,at its best!! With the reconstruction going on,when will the other intermediate stations be back in service?? Just one more question- how old is that line?? Thank you 😊 💓 ☺️! Thank you 😇 😊!!
That is one clean tram! If that was in Melbourne it wouldn't last five minutes like that!
So cool! Thank you very much.
What amazing engineering!!!

Welcome to Hong Kong
Nice ride
Awesome video!

How on earth does the point configuration at 3:28 work?! It's dead clever, but I can't figure out how the rails and wheels interface correctly?
Search "Abt Switch" on Wikipedia, the tram has double flanges on the outside wheel and no flanges on the inside wheel.
I did this run in 2019 right before they closed the old trains, I was staying in Kowloon.
On the lower part there seems to be quite a lot of "stations" or halts that were passed. Do these still get used? Or are they all completely abandoned?
They are still in use, tram will stop by pressing the button on the tram or at the station. From the video you can see the tram has stopped two times while approaching the peak, which in fact is the opposite tram stopping at the stations. The usage of those intermediate stations is low due to high ticket price of the peak tram, which now mainly serves as a tourist attraction rather than a public transport.
Welcome to Hong Kong.
great ride thanks for sharing ;-)
How the wheels can pass through that kind of rail switch?
The outside wheels are double flanged and the inside wheels are flat with no flange.
Read here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funicular
It's called "Abt Switch"
very nice, and amazing scenery
but still i cannot understand how those "switches" are working 😛
probably one train has double flanged wheels (ie: a flange on each side of the wheel) on the left and plain wheels (ie: no flange) on the right ... whilst the other train has the double flanged wheels on the right and plain wheels on the left. So, where tracks diverge each train always stays the side with the flanged wheels.
btw, on normal trains all wheels have a flange (just the one flange per wheel) and these are always on the inside of the wheel
5:30 Can someone explain to me how the trams wheels on the right transfer over without a rail? There is a break in the rail... does it not use the rails?
This is answered by @EdwardChan.999:

To film an empty train, erm, how is that possible? Lucky you - I've always been on crowded trains.
Anyway... thanks for the film, I am yet to ride these trains but very much hope to be able to visit Hong Kong again to do this.
4:18 上り下り交換セクションの後、合流するかと思いきや、まさかの…これは3線軌条といえば3線軌条なのでしょうが、日本では見られない方式ですね
Not sure why when I share the video the video description language is in Japanese.
Who changed the open points at 3.35 mins..?
Where is it?
welcome to HK
Прелестно! 😊❤
Impressive!
very cool
How does this system work?
Like an elevator, except the counterweight is another train.
It's explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funicular
It uses an "Abt Switch" in the middle section.
why so empty ?? but very beautiful and classy
Where is everybody?
Well it is a cable train but a smaller version of the original ones on the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883!
The passing loop seems unnecessarily long.
香港は今危ないですね
❤
How does the emergency brake works if the main cable snapped? Cant see any safety cables that the train could hold onto in case of accident. That's super dangerous, would not wanna ride this cable car.
You could read the Safety Regulations, they're online.
You could look at the Swiss engineering company that supplied the operating equipment.
Or you could just stay off super dangerous high-tech tramways.
Ignorance is bliss!
How do they make a profit with no riders?
request authorities to make animal bridge over the route, specially near the forest area.
I used to travel to work on the trams from Wanchai every day, stopping to but dim sum for breakfast then up to the top of the Victoria Peak in the cable car. We installed the networks and a new entertainment system in the new Peak Tower. I was in Hong Kong for many months I love the people there and would love to go back. But I never will as long as China rules as I have heard the horror stories how they treat the good people of that country. I was there just before the UK had to leave and hundreds of thousands wanted the UK to stay as guardians of HK.

哇,这个安全吗?看起来有点像矿车
你TMD沒來過香港嗎? 連山頂纜車都不懂的鄉下人!
If you ride this in 2023 or beyond, be prepared to queue across the street for an hour or more, it's a busy ride up the mountain. If there are any Chinese tour groups around you, they will absolutely make it a miserable experience. They aggressively force their way to the front of anything resembling a queue, even in the gated areas leading up to the tram where there are only a handful of people. Expect them to elbow you in the ribs and otherwise push you aside in their rush to get window seats.
😂🤣😂👍🤣😂🤣
Una funicolare che funziona, non come a Biella dove l'amministrazione di incapaci ha preferito sostituire la storica funicolare con degli ascensori inclinati.
Welcome to dangerous Hong Kong
Depends if you're demonstrating or not.
Very cool
