Always great to see the DMV featured in your videos, JOM. The DC area has so many great trails and roads to ride, and DC is gorgeous. The best time is early on a Sunday when no one is out and you can just cruise through all the neighborhoods. I agree with the other poster that Rock Creek Parkway trail to Beach Drive all the way to where it dead ends in Bethesda is a really great ride. About 40 out an back from Arlington. And you know about all the gravel goodness out west in Loudoun, etc. Hopefully I'll see you out here in the future. Cheers.
Sweet memories of my time there. Also triggering Marine Corps Marathon memories - some sweet, some not so - with the Carrilon & Iwo Jima Memorial. Thanks JOM & LGC. Best time of the year to visit DC and bikes are the way to go.
@@GravelCyclistIt gets closed off sometimes when they're setting up a motorcade or for protests or something, but that's temporary. As a general rule it's open to pedestrians and bikes, it's been closed to cars since Oklahoma City. Personally, I avoid that area on a bike. Too many tourists!
I agree that touring by bike is a good way to go in DC. People don’t realize how much walking it can be to see the sites on the mall. And it’s easy to get over to Arlington National Cemetery. It’s just very easy to get around.
You need to explore the C&O Canal. That’s 186 miles of gravel riding starting in Georgetown to Cumberland Maryland. From there you can connect to the GAP (Great Allegheny Passage) Trail and add another 140 miles all the way to Pittsburgh PA. All gravel with little vehicle traffic.
Hello again Anythony, I was lucky to ride the C&O to Cumberland, and take the Amtrak back to DC with a friend... now an older video, not my typical style of hand held videograpy - ua-cam.com/video/kkvPNJSqDxM/v-deo.html
Interesting; we did a loop thru DC yesterday. Lots of bike trails and dedicated bike lanes. Portions of Beach Drive (along Rock Creek) in DC and MD are closed to cars on weekends. You just have to bring time since trails get crowded.
An excursion that could be fun for those with good legs is going from Mt Vernon in VA to DC (and back). Trail is pretty nice but the pavement can be a bit rough and sometimes very busy with other riders and pedestrians. Scenery is quite nice in my opinion though!
I have been meaning to ride that another time. I've ridden the C&O from DC to Cumberland, I have a video about that experience on the channel. However, video style was before I changed to handheld, etc.
There are elevators at metro stations, no need to put bikes on escalators. Escalator etiquet is stand on right, walk on left. Any month outside of June, July, August, is best as it becomes quit crowded and of course, hot.
I know this was a little while back, but maaaan you're in my old neighborhood where I grew up and around the corner from my mom in Largo/Landover! One these time that youre in the DMV (and I have the legs) I'd love to tag along on a ride with you guys! ✌🏾
I love the DC area and surrounds! I normally stay with a long-time friend who resides in Upper Marlboro. I don't think I'll make it this year, but if I return in 2024, I will have post a notice about a sweet cruise ride about DC that any and all are welcome to join. It would be fab for some true locals to show some of the lesser known spots.
@@GravelCyclistyou were lucky one of my friends, a Metro Transit Cop, didn’t stop you. He would have raced you on his bike with full kit: body armor, guns, ammo, radio, and ticket book.
@@anthonylorenzo49 Totally understand, the employee watching the turnstile said I could use the escalator... quiet time of day? Or, he got it wrong. Lesson learned for next time.
Yeah right. The dc and other large city crime thing is just fake news. Just ask you favorite congressman who was jacked. And actually I don’t watch Fox News. So just just go out your head back in the sand. 🤷♂️
It is truly the best way to see DC is by BIKE. I rode from Pittsburgh to DC a couple years ago & on our last day we toured DC by bike. LOVE IT.

Thank you!
Pennsylvania Ave is open to the public. You can get pretty close to the White House.
Glad to hear things are changing for the better since this video.

What? No hot laps at Hains Point?
Hahahaha younger JOM would have been all about it.

Arguably the best cycling infrastructure in the United States.

This particular video was recorded a couple of days after Veteran's Day. DC was a complete ghost town, fantastic.
I want to go there in the future and live there what kind of pros and cons you can give me?

Have you heard the dreaded "HELLO!!!" Ice Cream truck song?
No, but it sounds like something I need to avoid!
I have one that comes through my street every summer. It makes me laugh, actually because it sounds just like Howard Stern's mother.

@@GravelCyclist Awesome! I'll definitely stay tuned!
was this the trip you took to DC in the auto train? Either way, enjoying the content. Love DC but never did it by bike.
Hello there, it was indeed that trip. I sat on this video for almost a year before I finally had time to edit!
@GravelCyclist Nice! That vid about the auto train is the one that got my son wanting to take a vacation on the train.
In the DC metro subway, bikes go in the elevators, not the escalators.
