I actually never knew that tires more than 6 years old shouldn't be used. We have used ones older than that and they were perfectly safe and didn't de-laminate or blow-out. I wouldn't necessarily say age should dictate when tires need to be replaced but the condition of them. If you see cracking in the rubber replace them, if they are excessively worn replace them, slashed: replace, unusual tread wear: replace, won't balance: replace.

That is true.... At high speed old tires fail because the speed applied to old tires. High speed plus weather conditions and heavy load conditions make the old tires fail. Tires are like bread for high speed, the older the tired is dryer and not good for use. But in low speed like the pedal bikes or low speed vehicle it is OK, only to go slow and not with heavy load.

Yes I know how to check date codes. I’ve had Michelin Tires on my cars after 10 years and still have no cracks in them. I don’t replace them until they start cracking. Never had a tire failure not going to change what I do. Been Driving for 45+ years there will always be a warning signs before a tire fails you just got to pay attention and inspect your tires. Yeah I bought 5 year old new tires. So right now they are 9 years old and the tread is still good, I would have switched them out without a second thought. The date code was on the inside of the tire which right now was easy to read as they were stored in my garage. @@TheBlkac1 There is more to it than that however. In the UK the government has set up a system so that used tires from responsible dealers should be safe. The public clearly has bought in. The problem is that this safety has been subverted by basic greed and if the reporting is accurate it's rampant. Given that reality, drivers need to take responsibility and refuse to buy these tires except from a known and absolutely trusted source. If money was an issue and it's my money I would look for a plainer simpler less expensive car and put top quality brand new tires and brakes on it. Cheaping out on basic safety is stupid. Saving money doesn't do you any good if you're dead and ultimately it's our responsibility.

Having worked in engineering a long time, and large Class 5-8 trucks, there's a LOT you don't know about tires. The DOT date coding is only a PART of the information you should understand. Then, you compound the problem with things like 'what about age MAKES a tire fail?' Aging for a automotive tire is a function of 'drying' or as some say, 'dry rot'. Dry rot is the effects of Ozone and UV light over time. Like a 'fire triangle', remove UV or Ozone, and you remove 'dry rot'. I can hermetically seal a car tire in a capsule devoid of UV light and Oxygen, and pull it out 20 years from now and it will be LIKE NEW in all aspects! I can put a new car tire on an 'open-air' rack in front of a store in Arizona, and in 4-years, it will be deadly. Add in other 'DOT code' data, such as speed ratings, load ratings and the customer FREQUENTLY exceeding them, and you've got catastrophic failure.
There's a reason none of this is 'mandated by the government', because it is NOT as simple as a one-sentence basic rule! All tire companies would need to do, to triple the shelf-life of a tire, would be to 'blister-pack' the tires in 10-mil black plastic with a nitrogen gas fill, and your average store could safely keep them on the shelf for 20-years, and then safely sell them to you! The little things you don't know, that this ignorant video didn't explain to you!

If a tire does blow it doesn't have to be a major problem if cool head prevail. Hold the steering wheel straight and decrease the speed and you will survive ,just don't panic. Check your tires pressure and tread wear and you should have no problem. As you eluded to UV rays are the csuse of most tire damage. Thank for the post.

Age of the tires may not have been the only factor in that kids demise. The tires could have been underinflated, not a sufficient load range, mounted on the rim incorrectly or driven at too high a speed. Could also have been simply a manufacturing defect, which is not uncommon. Always inspect your tires before every significant journey.

My trucks and vehicles give me about 48 tires to maintain. What a pain in the ass. Buy most online now and they give the dot code. Also Walmart seems to have fresh tires of decent quality. So often I forget to check the date when shopping price and size and tread. Have to keep a bunch of plug kits, or I would be broke. Must say after hundreds + of plugs, never had a blowout. Just carry a spray bottle of soapy water, finds leaks far faster than those Goobers sticking a tire in a tank. The family van gets the best and patches on the inside. Just checked one backhoes tires - tiny leaks in cracks on the sidewall. That's when they gotta go, but pretty hard to get hurt on a machine that rarely sees 10 MPH. It's the WALK AROUND daily that saves your life, but tell your wife that.

Is anybody surprised? America thrives on corporatism. Companies hire accountants "beancounters" to compile statistical data on the number of accidents that they may be liable for from product defects. If it is significant, they maybe forced to have warning labels or recalls, otherwise its business as usual. At 4:55, look at the body language of the rep. for the tire manufacturers after he says that there is no scientific way of detecting tire safety based on age. Rubber becomes dry and starts cracking with age. This is just a fact.

I replaced them back in July I think. I replaced them when my dad noticed that one of them looked low on air. After I checked them out they all had 32 psi but that one tire looked lower than the others. After i put 36 psi in that tire it still looked lower than the other tires. I'm thinking belts might have failed in that one tire. I can't remember which direction the cracks were.

As this video is 11 years old, it is frighteningly obvious we the US consumers are buying old
tires as "new" If they mount the DOT codes on the inside instead on the outside, I cannot imagine too many of us getting on the ground where our car is parked with a flash light just to read the full DOT number. Then only to find out our tires are older than 6 years. Horrible!!!!

Age in years is NOT the problem!!! Oxidation of the rubber is the problem. A 12 year old tire that has been indoors in an air conditioned room is not half as dangerous as a 6 year old tire that has been in the hot summer sun and winter rain. The sun oxidizes the rubber, causing oxygen embrittlement and cracking. Then the rain gets into the cracks, speeding up the process, then freezes in the winter, widening the cracks. 6 years is the limit for this tire, not for one in a temp controlled room away from the sun.

If air is trapped between the layers or there are wrinkles on the ply itself, failure might occur even before the tread comes off. So we cant only blame the age of the tyre, the way it was made plays a huge role.

Also when this film was being done they were a lot of tires called recaps. Recaps are now illegal except for on government vehicles, specifically department of corrections vehicles.
There are many cars out there with tires that are 10 years old in the tires of been tested and found to be perfectly fine.

U probably got a slow leak from a screw/ nail in the tread or maybe a leak from the new valve stem... lower psi, overheats the tire & eventually blows out. Don't skimp on road hazard warranty & they'll probably replace it.

  • @algrayson8965

The date code is by itself. The first two digits are the week and the second two digits are the year since 2000.
I had a pickup which spare tire had never been on the road. The wheel lug seats' paint was untouched (paint should be scraped out of the seats of the wheel). It always had 80-85 psi as I would check its pressure occasionally, topping it up if needed.
When the truck had a flat, I put the 23(!!) year old spare on. As it was on the front, I let it down to the specified 45 psi. Of course I knew not to use this tire despite it appearing brand new. I intended to use it only to get to the tire store, but intentions get thwarted.
The tire came apart in a few hundred miles. It broke. As it was on the front it didn't cause any trouble, just a little inconvenience. If it had been on the back it could have caused a loss of control and a crash.

An oval mark on the side of tires as example ....4417...stands for the tire being made on the 44th week of 2017. In Tx. big truck and trailer tires are not allowed to be recapped once tire gets to 5 years old. I always look at the date they are made and personally don't buy if already 3 years old but that's my preference.

It's all about information.... We as consumers don't have much knowledge about tires... If we would be better informed , then we would choose newer produced tires. Then the sale stores would trie to keep in stock less older tires by trying to sell sooner the older ones by using better discounts for these...
The result of this will be; less older tires in stock

Tires can most certainly dry rot and blow apart, but a tires tread is not just going to come off unless you went the cheap skate way and bought tires that are retreaded, OR was sold a tire that was retreaded unknowingly. Retreads are tires that have worn out original tread, then the owner or tire shop will more or less adhere new tread to the old rubber. This is extremely dangerous if you don't use those tires properly. Trucking companies do this for cost effectiveness but are only authorized to use them on the trailers where they can maintain control of the vehicle when the tread falls off.Other info you should know, BF Goodrich is notorious for faulty tires and have issued tire recalls over and over, as well as been the center of numerous lawsuits.

In 2002 I purchased 4 new tires for my Pontiac. Two weeks later my wife was driving down the interstate when the tread on the left front tire partially came off. It destroyed the driver side front fender and scared her badly. I sent the tire in to Goodyear and they said the tire was overinflated. I checked the other 3 tires and they were all ok. A couple months later another tire tread separated. I removed all the tires and purchased Michelin. End of problem.
