If i heard this as an album without the video or any background info, i would have assumed you'd spent a billion hours in a DAW microediting and laboriously sequencing every tiny aspect of your magnum opus to within an inch of its life (and your sanity)... but no you've bloody done it all as a live performance using a single FM groovebox.. and with some very cool commentary to guide us through your thoughts. You know it, and now we know it... but what an epic achievement mate. Incredible
Honestly, besides the big ass brain in Cuckoo's head, the Elektron sequencer is amazing for doing things that would be kind of a pain in the ass with a DAW. I've had my Model:Samples for about a week and I already find certain things much faster and more intuitive than FL Studio, and I've been using that for 10 years. Elektron outdid themselves with these two That said, Cuckoo definitely runs with that and takes it way beyond what I thought it was capable of. Really great set here
@@Gwyn94 exactly the same here. Been on ableton casually for the last couple decades. Got the model cycles last month. Changed my life. Ordered the octatrack. Lol.
A lot of people try to fight against the toyish FM sounds of the cycles to make something that's supposed to sound more professional and sophisticated. But you, on the contrary, you fully embrace its distinct sound engine and make something magical and fun with it. It's an absolute bliss to hear ! It almost sound like a Megadrive (Genesis) sometimes and it's easy to tell that you truly love FM synthesis.
Thanks man! I really do love FM synthesis, guilty as charged. 🤣 The megadrive is an excellent example of how flexible FM synthesis can be. Musicians had to use only FM, and of course it could play samples, and it had those older sound chips as well from the master system, but largely it was FM synthesis only. So in many ways this is like composing game music for the megaDrive, just in a much more simplified sound engine environment. The base and kick sounds you can get out of the model cycles is sick.
It's just that the Model:Cycles defaults to a certain sound but the great thing is that it's really not that hard to make it sound quite different. Laid back, toned down or more serious, if you will. Well, in the end it will always sound like the Model:Cycles ;) But it still has a pretty good range!
Seriously so great. I just started teaching my 11 year old how to use mine and he took it to school for "teach the teacher day" and showed them a beat he built. I'm going to show him this set, I think it will blow his mind.
@@truecuckoo Elektron should cut you two a check for all the sales you've brought in for them. I watch *Red Means Recording* and *Cuckoo* Model:Cycles videos back to back and now I'm already planning the purchase.
How is that possible ? I was leading to the office, quiet tired...and sad. But at listening to your music, I felt joy. I can't even explain you the deep of my gratefulness toward you Cuckoo.
It has been a while since i have been this impressed on UA-cam and my little Cycles is sitting next to me giving me jeleous looks. Also it should be emphasized how refreshing it is on this media platform to see a "content creator" enjoying himself so intensely as you do. You are a very empathic being with a very beautiful connection to music i dare to claim. Thanks my friend!
This set has captivated me like nothing else since Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" in 1974! I've been listening/studying TB all these years with great delight and wonderment. Now, YOU have given us this magical musical masterpiece and I've loved listening/studying this just like TB! I will be enjoying this set for YEARS to come!!! Thank you so much for this refreshing dose of delicious ear candy! You've opened my eyes and ears to the amazing possibilities my Model Cycles is capable of! Thanks for the inspiration! I love you, True Cuckoo! Your music and sweet spirit is very therapeutic! 21:55
Seems a lot of people have been picking up or going back to the Model:Cycles lately. Would love a deep dive of the machine showcasing your workflow/tips and tricks to get the most out of it!
I love this set so much, I had to watch it again. The last song sounds very emotional. I seriously almost shed a tear. I'm such a big fan, Cuckoo. I wish I could manipulate ANY of my synths as well as you do with yours. Cheers
Amazing. I had been distracted by sad personal news. I so needed cheering up, then I remembered you Cuckoo. Thank you for being a real human. I salute you sir.
Today I listened to it on good speakers instead of headphones for the first time. The punchy fm drums sound amazing in the natural room reverb, which I also noticed with my Digitone. Only now I got to really appreciate all the details and creative elements in this amazing set! With headphones, I felt overwhelmed with all the sounds hammering inside my brain, but with speakers it's a joy! Thank you Cuckoo!
Amazing and uplifting also. This proves what I thought for along time now. Give an inspired person anything and he-she will make something out of it. When I think of all the "deep thinkers" with the boring "oh it has these disadvantages and can't do it all bla bla bla" but can't make exciting music even with the best setup. Wraios Cuckoo!
Thanks Saar. A musical instrument is made for creating music. And I’m finding this machine great fun to play ❤️ Sometimes we will be caught up in details and specs, but that’s no fun.
So good to be able to attend an intimate and uplifting gig while being here in lockdown for the past 12 weeks! Cuckoo you are the Dr and the Chemist with the diagnosis and prescription and then the treatment. Thanks immensely from Sydney …🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️😁😁😁
Your music is always so playful and uplifting. Love this setup where we can see everything you're doing on the instrument while also seeing your joy performing. Thanks for sharing
Cuckoo, I follow you for so many years, but this was an amazing show of performance and programming. Thank you for doing this and I hope you know how much joy you bring to the world! You are really a true wizard of FM awesomeness.
I love everything about this - not just as a technical showcase of what the Model:Cycles can do (perhaps my favorite "cheap" synth), but just the whole infectious groove of it all. Listening to this has put a huge grin on my face, watching you perform it just makes the grin even larger -- and all of this just makes me happy. Thank you for being who you are, and for sharing that with the world.
This is absolutely unbelievable... really shows just how much I'm not doing with my cycles. Sounds like I'm revving it up after this. Really really fantastic stuff, I love how much feeling, expression and love there is in the sound of this - things typically not super associated with FM synthesis.
I already have the 4th track as my ringtone. This performance is just AMAZING, from my point of view one of your best (with the one you did at the video game convention). It is crazy to see how your own music makes you dance
You are supremely talented and it’s a joy to both listen to and watch you perform this magnum opus on the Model Cycles. Crazy, brilliant and the highest example of the capabilities of this amazing little box of musical wizardry.
Holly hell, I did not expect anything close to this banging set. Awesome work on the sequencing, interesting rhythms and great melodies! And the Cycles sounds so damn pretty with plucky sounds, bleeps and blobs.
This is great work. The neurotic detail in building these is overwhelming. Such a fun machine, but you had to have spent so long constructing these. Impeccable.
Hi Cuckoo! I'm currently also trying to do my 1st "Cycles-only" set and this magic you do here gives me always great joy and inspiration! I think the Cycles is a truly underestimated groovebox! 🔊🔊🔊
This was an insanely expressive, cool and inspiring set. Thanks Cuckoo for embracing weirdness and quirkyness in your music. Love the rhythms and the occasional "not-in-a-regular-way-harmonic" notes and chords. You made that little box shine. :-)
This is so amazing! You can do more with one $300USD synth than most can with a 1/2 million dollar studio. Looking forward to more minimal setup dedicated setups. Love that idea of pick a set up and work only with what you have in front of you (tuck the rest out of sight)! Would love a new Digitone set too;););) 🙏
That was truly amazing 👏🙌💯🙏 I want a copy on vinyl. Not many youtuber gear reviewers can make music like that. From the bottom of my heart ❤you are next level. Up there with the best. What is it about Elektron..? They give us something for percussion, we need to make melodies... they give us something for melodies, we want to make percussion... lol In this case, they give us something meant to be a simple, low-cost FM drum machine, and you make a whole album in it.. lmao Thank you Cuckoo, for being the official manual to every Elektron machine I've ever bought. :)
Im utterly delighted and dumbfounded by your ability to make amazing music in just about everything you touch. So fresh and quirky, reminds me of Mouse on Mars Niun Niggung. One of my favorite albums of all time. I’d travel just to see you play man. You’re one of my favorite content creators/ music maker rn. I love your vibe too. I’d love to know the process you went through to make this set. It might be to much to ask for a walkthrough but if you ever are up to it I would be forever grateful. 😃
Inspired by this! It's so easy to get caught up in getting another synth or piece of gear, but when you focus on learning one piece thoroughly.....this can happen.
I am also doing an album of ringtones! I did one previously on the minilogue, which worked out so well because of how its volca-style sequencer was integrated. I'm doing another set now on the Roland JDxA which I adore sonically but the sequencer isn't all intuitive & interactive like minilogue was. These you've made on the Model : Cycles absolutely have that ringtone essence I'm also shooting for! I've got my eye on the Model : Cycles as well.
