@@AudioPilz I just picked up a Sonicware Liven XFM and the really limited 6-voice polyphony across 4 tracks is actually something I approach as a feature, rather than a limitation; Voice stealing can be really cool when planned out properly. ...It is definitely a great "Bad Gear" instrument BTW; Insanely unique, textural, useable, and beautiful sounding, yet confoundingly limited and frustratingly designed... Spot on review - I was going to sell mine in a recent studio reshuffle, but I decided to hang on to it. The one thing (IMHO) that would seriously elevate this thing in the studio would be to simply allow pattern triggering via MIDI notes for arranging in your DAW. Despite the stereo only outputs and other shortcomings, I could live with that one addition. I'm really only using it as a drum machine.
The Haxan footage literally made me laugh out loud. I was thinking if you'd have thrown in some of Ingmar Bergman's 7th Seal or Carl Theodore Dryer's Vampyr that this could have been the most epic bad gear review in all of Scandinavian history, but it nonetheless managed to be top notch by all other metrics!
*Before watching video* i swear every time I look up a synth or hear about a new one that i should buy, it always always always shows up on this channel
You've done a few FM synths, I'd really want to take a look at the CZ-101. It's a very fun synth to program with a unique sound that gets looked down upon for being a "poor man's DX7"
I would rather call it the "canny man's DX7"! But as far as Casio synths go, I think the HT6000 ticks more of the bad gear boxes with its horrendous storage limitations, terrible MIDI implementation, and horrible double alpha wheels for editing. But, then again it is far less known than the CZ range... So yeah, count me in, another vote for the CZ-101.
@@fatkev1983 As a long time collector of home and toy keyboards, I think CASIO could be a whole sub-series of Bad Gear. Best reviews/demos ever, seriously. I always LOVE your channel. I just sold my Model:Samples on Reverb... didn't want to but, bills. There is something about this little box that makes me very happy. I don't know what it is. The reverb? It's so clean / good. One of my all-time favorite reverbs. Is it the 1gb of storage? Using the thing as an "all vintage drum machines in one box" kind of thing? Even with only 6 tracks, you could literally fit all classic drum machine one-shots in there. T1 kick, T2 snare, T3 clap, T4 chh, T5 ohh, T6 ride or whatever... good times. I'll likely get one again, money-permitting. It would be nice if the price went back down to $299 as it was for over a year.. but since pandemic, Elektron went back to the original price. Things I hate about it-- backing projects/patterns up has to be done via sysex. They couldn't just include this inside Transfer? It would be so ridiculously easy to back up patterns/projects that way... even just moving the sysex files from it. I didn't even bother... I just recorded the patterns as audio into Reaper, and factory-reset it... deleted my custom sample folders, my projects, patterns, etc. I've never used a Digitakt but I think I would enjoy it... the ability to sample, more tracks... midi tracks are polyphonic, not monophonic... etc. Who else out there either loves their M:S or regrets selling it? Every time i hear the EH Platform compressor i feel like i should get one because it sounds so damn punchy! I don't own any synths or drumboxes anymore (even though i'm still eyeballing some gear just for the fun of it) and i play the drums so there's absolutely no use for a pedal in my house, and i still want one. So good! Great video again, the Samples seems like a fun little box! Best wishes for 2023, hope you'll continue putting out these awesome video's. The only way to start your weekend.
Got it as my first hardware sampler and I loved it and the workflow. I ended up selling it in the end cause the more complex things you do with it the more you wish it had overbridge.
Thanks for the video! I do love Elektron gear and old skool samplers. The S6000 is still the GOAT and I still use it. May it never be the subject of a Bad Gear Episode!
It's Friday again! Thanks for the review! I was waiting for the battery handle to purchase one of these as a mobile device but if I recall right the battery handles were pulled off from the market. I'm happy with DT and DN.
Tbh the model:samples is what I hoped the Korg Volca Sample would be when it was announced. Yes it's more expensive, but it's about 10 times better. I wish it was battery powered though. No, the power handle doesn't count!
It’s a shame it doesn’t hold 4 AA batteries inside, for sure. I have a USB A adapter which runs it from a phone battery pack, but it’s an awkward dangling thing to pack up.
That second jam was intensely spooky, definitely one of my favorites. Also nice to see clips from Haxan in the third segment. This might be the first time I've recognized visual source material on this channel.
Welcome to Bad Gear, a show about the world's YT viewers setting playback speed to 0.75 so they can have enough time to smash the pause button to catch the now borderline subliminal messaging memes...
Hi Florian. Thanx for yet another great bad gear showcase. I've just scrolled through pages of the comments section looking for like-minded individuals. There were none. So I'm going to be the total outlier and state that I have never liked the sound of this thang or the cycles for that matter. I know it is not like for like but I'm waiting for an SP 404 Mk 2 to appear in my searches at the right price. In the meantime I'll stick with my cursed Volca Sample 2 but only because there is a limit to how much buyer's remorse that this guy can handle. B.
When it takes me half an hour to watch 8 minutes of video and the only channel I refuse to watch on my mobile because it doesn't have a space bar 😅 So I couldn't see it yesterday 😢 Thanks for all the friday goodness you imbue upon the internet!
Awesome episode! I love my Elektron Model Samples! Although I don´t understand why it converts every sample to mono. Storage space should not be an issue these days.
Model:samples was my first Elektron box. Used it extensively for 14 months, pairing it with a DigitoneKeys at some point. I'm glad I went with the M:S as my first foray into grooveboxes/sequencing: i love the elektron sequencer and workflow. I eventually went all in with an ARMKII that I absolutely LOVE. If I had started with the DT, i wouldn't have bought the analog drum machine.
A great gateway drug to a DIgitakt. If you are new to samplers, I think it would be a pleasant surprise despite the limitations. Thanks for the excellent analysis, as always.
I can only agree wih you. The Elektron workflow in a proper stereo sampler with some more sample mangling capabilities in combination with that sequencer would be an instant buy. And to your point, it's enough if they aim for feature parity of samplers of the late 90s. 🙈 Great video as always!
Great episode, cool jams. Long time model samples user. Agree on the reverb and the delay (mind that delay feedback level). Lots to love about the model samples and not much to complain. More samplers plz. Not sure have you done Yamaha SU200 yet?
I don't know if this attitude has been influenced by this channel, but any time I want to complain about gear I try to find a way to turn weaknesses into strengths. I definitely have a couple complaints about the samples. Still working on figuring out how to turn a couple of them into strengths.
No jokey comment about the video this time, sorry. Just a huge thanks for the great content! Keep on keeping on! (edit: jam 1 has a nice circa 2003 techno feel to it)
This was my gateway Elektron box, followed by the Model:Cycles = took about 3 months before I sold them both so I could get a Digitakt and Digitone. Since then I have a Syntakt, an Octatrack (still in the box after my only attempt to learn how to use it) and an Analog Four (which is superb). The Elektron world is an expensive rabbit hole to dive into..........
Fair game. I bought mine, took the learning curve and made some lazy tracks with it. Enjoyed it, boxed and stored it and am now looking forward to the time I dig it out and find out it's obsolete in every way. Which does sound like a TB-303 history, so yeah: future classic! I had a :Cycles too but sold it because its internal (not-nice) distortion sounded much worse than the :Samples'. All-in-all, embrace Bad Gear, we'll be fine.

C&SESWP House is my favourite genre mash-up yet! Amazing work!
Thank you!!!
It's Friday again! Thanks for the review!
I was waiting for the battery handle to purchase one of these as a mobile device but if I recall right the battery handles were pulled off from the market.
I'm happy with DT and DN.
These handles were a real danger to your health;)
upvote for getting the word sphygmomanometer in there somehow
I had to practice that;)
A Bad Gear episode coincidentally on my birthday. Thank you.
Happy birthday!!!
Tbh the model:samples is what I hoped the Korg Volca Sample would be when it was announced. Yes it's more expensive, but it's about 10 times better. I wish it was battery powered though. No, the power handle doesn't count!
I'm afraid of that power handle too;)
It’s a shame it doesn’t hold 4 AA batteries inside, for sure.
Thanks!!!
Welcome to Bad Gear, a show about the world's YT viewers setting playback speed to 0.75 so they can have enough time to smash the pause button to catch the now borderline subliminal messaging memes...
❤️❤️❤️
I want a playlist of all of your demo tracks and their videos. The editing in your videos is mind blowing.
Thank you!!! Full tracks and jams are available on Patreon (shameless plug;)
Still the best infotaining Channel! And Professional knowledge behind. Ohh yess and great music composition at the end of video. Cheers!!
I sincerely hope manufacturers are watching. Excellent work as usual.
Thank you!!!
Damn tunes are on point! Dope stuff. I hope you don't need a day job anymore given how much effort clearly goes into your episodes. Much respect.
Thank you!!!
This video is ticking all the "I have a day off today" boxes. Thank you good sir!
Thank you, have a nice one!!!
As always a great episode, loved the Haxen Phonk. That's a very nice reverb indeed!
Thanks!!!
Nick... Overdrive face... Perfectly nailed it 😆😆🔥
The man. The legend.
@@AudioPilz ...The face. 🤣
Your script wiring is so brilliant. Thanks for another awesome vid
Thank you!!!
"I have no idea what I'm doing" -Man immune to the Nord wizardry.
Another great episode man.
Thanks!!! Totally not immune;)
Always a pleasure!!!
Ouch... this is 1 of those things not worth the shelf space to store it in, but somehow, you still make it sound great!
Thanks!!!
What a superstart of 2023 loved that witch video, Ioved the last one to with the moog dancers. Best wishes
TAO von Sweden.
Thank you!!!
Yo, the Scandinavian witchcraft phonk house sounds great. Well done x
for real it was a banger
You raised your own bar with this one. EXCELLENT video.
Thank you!!!
The S20 gag at the start cut this thing so deep I think you killed it.
Thank you!!!
For all the shortcomings you described it actually has a fantastic sound!
Great sample player engine indeed!
When it takes me half an hour to watch 8 minutes of video and the only channel I refuse to watch on my mobile because it doesn't have a space bar 😅 So I couldn't see it yesterday 😢
Thanks for all the friday goodness you imbue upon the internet!
Yeah, this show needs the right UI;)
that's not fair!!! just bought my unit today, just to recognize that it's baaad gear 🙂
Nothing personal;)
@Audiopilz : you never fail to deliver!
Thank you!!!
Awesome episode! I love my Elektron Model Samples! Although I don´t understand why it converts every sample to mono. Storage space should not be an issue these days.
Thank you! Yes, it remains a mystery...
we enjoyed!! we enjoyed!!
happy new year to users
& lovers of bad gear from
here to timbuktu & beyond!!
❤️❤️❤️
Model:samples was my first Elektron box. Used it extensively for 14 months, pairing it with a DigitoneKeys at some point. I'm glad I went with the M:S as my first foray into grooveboxes/sequencing: i love the elektron sequencer and workflow. I eventually went all in with an ARMKII that I absolutely LOVE. If I had started with the DT, i wouldn't have bought the analog drum machine.
👍
perfect timing, just bought one a week ago!
Nice!!!
That track at the end was fire 🔥 great ep as always
Thank you!!!
A great gateway drug to a DIgitakt. If you are new to samplers, I think it would be a pleasant surprise despite the limitations. Thanks for the excellent analysis, as always.
Thank you!!!
Never got inspired by my Samples. Thanks for the likely bump in the resale price (The AudioPilz Effect) of mine.
It's usually just a little spike;)
Utterly hilarious, once again! And full of truth! Thanks mate!
Thank you!!!
Happy Friday Florian!!
Have a nice weekend!!!
Was not expecting witch house to show up on the channel LOL love it
Thank you!!!
I can only agree wih you. The Elektron workflow in a proper stereo sampler with some more sample mangling capabilities in combination with that sequencer would be an instant buy. And to your point, it's enough if they aim for feature parity of samplers of the late 90s. 🙈 Great video as always!
Thank you!!!
Awesome finale🙌
Thanks!!!
Dude, your mixes are so killer...
Thank you!!!
what a banger that finale!
Thank you!!!
Once again you’ve made something “bad” sound like it’s Worthing buying… probably sit quite nicely into my “bad gear” set up 😂🤘🏼
Thank you!!!
Thanks! Had the SU10 on the show but SU 200 is a great idea!
The excitement I had when I saw this on my homepage… I feel like a kid again
😀😀😀
No jokey comment about the video this time, sorry. Just a huge thanks for the great content! Keep on keeping on! (edit: jam 1 has a nice circa 2003 techno feel to it)
Thank you so much!!!
Oooh that final track... :) Delight!
Thank you!!!
This was my gateway Elektron box, followed by the Model:Cycles
= took about 3 months before I sold them both so I could get a Digitakt and Digitone.
Since then I have a Syntakt, an Octatrack (still in the box after my only attempt to learn how to use it) and an Analog Four (which is superb).
The Elektron world is an expensive rabbit hole to dive into..........
Yeah, that's the natural way of things;)
How many tracks do you have out, not counting self released? Just wondering
Damn, that video for the main jam was cool as hell.
Thank you!!!
Embrace Bad Gear❤️❤️❤️
Used mine yesterday!
Nice!!!
