    "An organ is just a stack of sine waves"
    Needed to hear this for myself, so I took Ableton's Operator instrument, disabled all but the first operator, and then used the Chord MIDI effect to create the same root-octave-5th-5th stack you mentioned the M1 organ patch uses. Instant M1 sound. Mind blown.

    To be fair, a lot of funk and disco (and so house) used Dorian mode so it sound pretty good to use it, the reason the 2nd is the issue with minor organ bass is because Dorian has a sharp 6th and you're using stacked 5ths (1st and 5th, 2nd and 6th, 3rd and 7th etc.) So long story short, if you want to use Dorian mode with organ bass, avoid the 6th (it has the major 3rd and would be mixolydian, confusing eh?) and natural minor avoid the 2nd.
    Honestly though, don't worry about the technicalities too much, in non exotic scales / modes, there's ONE NOTE that will be an issue and you should be able to hear it anyway, so just use your ears

      @@Bthelick Hiii thanks for the answer, I didn't express myself correctly, I was thinking about the envelopes or things like this and other minor post-processing. Or if those are only sine waves I am really impressed of the simplicity and the result!

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  2 місяці тому

      @andressparks9853 there's a little 8th note delay on there, and the original organ has a 'click' at the beginning so I emulated that by making a very short spike envelope and sending that to pitch , and white noise level you can do that in any synth.
      But yes it's true draw bar organs make sound by stacking sine waves. The Hammond organ is technically the first ever additive synthesizer.

    Ok, so I'm trying to help explain to people why the bassline for Jeremih's song Don't Tell 'Em is in G minor instead of D minor, and they don't seam to understand what I'm saying.
    How do i best explain which notes DJ Mustard (the producer of the song) is actually hitting vs. what those trying ot remake it are hearing?

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  6 місяців тому

      I know how you're getting that, as it starts on G , but it is in Dm imo. the bass line is G D A# A. They all have an 5th from the organ style bass, including that A, which has an E above which is Dm , or G Dorian. normally you could argue G Dorian but the vocal melody is Dm, and the 808 lands on D too, drowning out the first bass sub. So D sounds home to me in this one.
      I hear it as chords 4 1 6 5 in Dm.

    • @thecat-alyst2716
      @thecat-alyst2716 6 місяців тому

      @@Bthelick That makes sense. I guess those who try to remake it in FL Studio will have to remember which keys to actually hit when they are doing it for that bassline. It does take some trial and error.

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  6 місяців тому

      Yes, they probably won't have monitoring that goes low enough to hear the true bass either, it's going to be pretty weak on anything but good sub set ups.

    • @thecat-alyst2716
      @thecat-alyst2716 6 місяців тому

      @@Bthelick For sure. A friend of mine was trying to recreate the instrumentation but she was really struggling with the bassline because of those 5th higher tones present in the organ bass and how drown out the sub is. Got to hand it to that DJ Mustard guy who produced that song, he did something different with the organ bass that I haven't seen too often, though I'm not too familliar with hip-hop I'm more a house and trance guy.

    sounds like its best to just avoid those notes then.. unless you want to be in those obscure scales. went and looked at my project to see and by chance I used every note of the scale and skipped 7. Either luck or my ears picked that up.

    Yo I don’t get it if you said you don’t use the M1 organ but what do you use instead? Cuz I’ve been using the M1 and I got a cool melody but when I add the bass notes it sounds awful

    • @promatrix561
      @promatrix561 Рік тому

      Could you show a video on how you make the Organ Melodies? From scratch and actual show the synth M1 and show which organ you use and the settings you use as well.

    • @Bthelick
      @Bthelick  Рік тому +1

      This tutorial is just a warning for bass parts on the famous organ2 patch, not melodies. higher up the octaves playing melodies those harmonics shouldn't be a problem.
      I don't use a real m1 unfortunately, but the settings are irrelevant anyway, the m1 is a sample player, not a true synth, so there's no changing of these harmonics anyway, they are fixed in the sample. You could filter them out with a low pass filter but then it won't sound like an organ, just a sine wave.
      Your options are either;
      avoid note 2,
      write in Dorian (like let's groove),
      or just don't use organ bass.

      @@promatrix561 depends what you're trying to achieve. But if you've watched any of my videos you'll know I don't see the need for serum when Vital exists.
      I think I may have misunderstood your first question. What exactly is sounding awful?

    • @nomorewar
      @nomorewar Рік тому

      @@promatrix561 You should use a simple sine wave in any synthesizer of your choice. I faced a similar issue myself, as the M1 organ bass already incorporates multiple layers playing simultaneously on a single note.
