Even if this video wasn't good enough, what it's not the case at all, the simple fact of you have mentioned Bernard Edwards at 12:45 mins (some like that), made me love this video... Thank you for the tutorial!
Love your easy, fun and intuitive style. After a 15 year break from bedroom EDM I have now just set up again in the loft. Better for everyone's ears. I'll never create a great commercial track or anything that anyone would want to play on repeat, but I'm enjoying messing around again and you help with that massively. The missus is out tonight, so I'm gonna do some bass! Thank you

Really enjoying your videos I’m leaning so so much and how you portray your knowledge is a gift Genuinely I’m great full for your kindness in sharing !
This was absolutely enlightening! Even before applying anything and just knowing these fundamental guidelines provides for a lot of clarity and confidence where there first was confusion and uncertainty, getting rid of as you said, making an individual bassline and just hoping that it fits. An absolute shame that I have just now discovered your channel but im going to munch up on all the knowledge you are sharing here. Thanks a bunch! Cheers!
Love this tutorial, I always recap when making my bass lines. Could you please do a video on the best sounds to use for House bass lines? I really struggle with sound selection.
Thanks Steve. I'm not sure there is any "best sound" tbh. Until you're experienced it's a case of referencing much more. It comes down to character vs function I suppose. I'll have a think on how I can explain that in a vid thanks and the idea 🙏
Loving the vids @bthelick Getting a funky vibe to a bassline can be a real pain in the .... massive thanks bro, your a legend!! Would you consider doing a video on sound selection for basslines? Or even your processing chain on bass for house music 😁
The rhythm isn't just any old rhythm. Bar 1 is the clave from afro-cuban music and bars 2/3 are the same but with the first note moved forward by 1/2 a beat. A simple way to make a rhythm is to play the same thing twice, then change it a little, then do something completely different in the last bar. 60% of the time it works every time.
I havent been through your entire video catalogue yet but i would love it if you created some videos in ways someone can recreate samples from the 70s and 80s disco/pop era.
Good idea. It's sometimes part of my job when a client can't clear a copyright. Hard to do a video though. UA-cam's system for multiple copyrights in a single video isn't liked by major record labels, when I show more than 1 recording labels tend to block the video. If I manage to find a bunch of tracks that all have the same owners and publishers then it should be possible, it's just finding the time 👊
Top video mate. 👍 Level 1 is how Jon Kong from Leftwing:Kody creates basslines for his piano tracks, sometimes simplicity is the secret sauce. 🎹🔥 Have a good week.
Or low notes , no rules really. I just ended up using high ones because I was showing the possibility of swapping octaves too. I do add an extra low note in the final bar too
No worries, ah ok well I do rate your content it's refreshing to be able to watch and listen and learn without the stuff that makes up alot of content on here these days. Cheers
Your amazing! I just discovered you and I love how you explain everything so clearly and so easy to understand! No BS at all, just cut to the chase. Thanks!
Hi Ben, In the context of underground club music, do you place a sine wave as a sub under the same bass line pattern or do you program a different pattern with the sub so it interacts with the bass line? Also, do you place a shortened version of the sine wave under the kick as well? PS - love those notes you placed at 14:55 ;) Thank you! V
No different notes will clash hard down there and take up lots of head room, I place the same notes for the sine. (See my how I process bass video if you haven't already) If the bass line is particularly busy, or the kick needs to be longer , then I may simplify the sub sine so it doesn't sound messy. You need a good monitoring environment to judge that though.
Amazing stuff B, however i have never seen you use midi sequencers for inspiration for basslines or melodies. If i have missed it apologies in advance please drop me a link so i can watch it. Otherwise id love to see what your thoughts are on using midi sequencer to generate ideas and inspiration. Thanks once again for all the knowledge that you bless us with sir 🙏
I wouldn't use a sequencer for bass. Not in the random generation sense anyway. I think the rhythm (and chord support where necessary) is too important to be random. People have to be able to dance to it. I like to use random sequencing on things like acid lines that are supposed to be random and would sound too musical if programmed purposely. Is that what you meant?
@@21cenutryschizoidman53In music there are no actual rules, the ears are always the final arbiter, do what sounds good! I mostly focus on beginner advice and these 'rules of thumb' are never absolute they are just 'hacks' drawn from common practices so you can get started fast That particular trick is advice for beginners making any modern music as a short cut to get things working in a minor key. 2 and 5 are just harder to fit in until you are able to understand/hear the individual notes of the melody you are supporting.
Haha thanks. No video but the patch is right there in the description for you to grab. All my synth sounds are made in the free system Vital where possible.
do you have any advice for making a piano melody? It seems like when I try to make a melody there is a lot of dissonance and it just doesnt sound right. Granted I dont know really anything about scales other than 1 3 and 5 chord but thats about it. But I do use the scale button on ableton so I have the scales in front of me. It just doesnt really sound great.
Are you writing melodies separately, or within the chords? Do you have any track examples of your favourites? (It might not let you place links so just tell me the names) Also, have you seen this video yet? ua-cam.com/video/rYT9VMAQRBI/v-deo.htmlsi=VTpCTXREUXvX47oL
The sub is on the same fundamental pitch. That's why remove that harmonic from the other bass so there's no chance of phrase cancelation there . The term "upper bass" refers to the upper frequency content not the pitch.
Lovely stuff. I'm sort of working on an old skool piano house banger at the moment and I've got the chord riff but haven't thought about the bassline yet. This video has reminded me of some of the ideas I should experiment with instead of just using the first thing that my fingers decide to play. Loved the shout out for Bernard Edwards. I always loved his octave-jumping basslines, possibly as much as all the early French filter house guys did. A couple of jumps and walks here and there and it sounds like Daft Punk or Fred Falke. Nice work and a great series!
Love this video, and in fact all of your others. I came to house music from a classical background as I think you did, but I have (almost) perfect pitch and so I find it quite disconcerting seeing you working in A, but the notes playing in B! Will you maybe consider those with perfect pitch in future videos? I get 100% why you want to work in Aeolian scale but I would have found the video much easier to watch if I could actually hear an A when you played one!
