A Pappy Van Winkle Alternative From Missouri?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лип 2024
- Pappy Van Winkle is undoubtedly the most sought after bourbon. Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to find at the suggested retail price, and many of the alternatives have very different flavor profiles. I found a bourbon from Missouri that has a similar recipe as PVW. Is it a good alternative? Watch to find out.

I live in Kansas City. This distillery is about 45 minutes from me. I love the distillery experience. They make good juice
This juice is top notch!
the bonded version is dangerously crushable... savor the sip folks...
Really amazing breakdown of the all the different flavors you experienced- super detailed and comprehensive. Great stuff!
Thanks for the video. Loved the history lesson. I like most everything Holladay makes.
Thanks for the video Randy as usual I enjoyed it. Keep them coming and I wish your well in her recovery.
I love both BiB versions and Rickhouse Proof versions. They’re one of my favorite distilleries. Glad to see they are getting so much attention. I just hope I can always find a bottle on the shelf
For clarification. There's two BiB, The Soft Red Wheat and Straight Whiskey and a Rickhouse Proof of each of those mash bills. A total of 4 different core lineup bottles. Also lots of HiVee Supermarket barrel picks out there worth picking up. The gift shop usually has something neat and exclusive as well.
Love the review and LOVE the history. I also really appreciate the insider information you bring to the table. All the little nuances that only someone involved in whiskey production would know.
Love the Soft Red
Thanks for sharing! IME, the Bardstown Origins BiB (the black label with a Wheated mash bill) gives Weller 107 a run for the money. The Ben Holliday BiB seemed to have an ethanol burn on the palate and is more disjoint in flavor compared to both the Weller 107 and Bardstown Origins.
I mentioned the prevalence of the ethanol note in the review. It didn't turn me completely off, but it is there.
Great review of that Bottle! I really like the Holladay line up, have not had their rickhouse proof yet but you have motivated me.
I'll be on the lookout for it here in MD!
I was able to find the Rickhouse proof at specs in Texas.
Just had a pour off the BH soft red wheat over the weekend and loved. I totally underrated this whiskey
I have the Bottled in Bond version, I was not a fan of the bottle at first but after trying a lot of different brands and bottles and letting the Holladay sit for a month or two I did start to really enjoy it.
Appreciate the review, I’ll have to look for that!
I got to go to the Holladay distillery a couple weeks ago. It’s a neat place out in the country and great whiskey.
Love my wheated bourbons...thanks Randy!!
You're welcome!
I've been pleasantly surprised with the BiB standard offering from Ben Holladay - but never have seen the Rickhouse Proofs in person. I have heard good things, and above all it's neat since a brand that was nowhere on the map a couple years back suddenly coming out with things as good as they are. I look forward to see what they come out with in future!
Have been impressed w/Holladay offerings thus far. Just picked up the 18 Barrel Blend as well. Appreciate the review.
I have a bottle of this from the same batch as the one you have! It's great stuff. I got a bottle of the rye version at the same time as well. Holladay is killing it right now.
I've only tried the BiB and really enjoyed it. And the fact that it's readily available at that price. I haven't seen an Antique 107 at SRP in 2 years (and I look, 😂). If it's on a shelf, it's between 150-200.
Great video. Thanks. For me, a good alternative I’ve found to VanWinkle/BT line is Wilderness Trail 6yr wheated mashbill.
Thanks for being here!
I have the BiB and really like it. Hoping to add rickhouse proof to the collection someday soon!
Holliday is making some great stuff.
I've been lucky enough to snag a BiB, a Sweet Red Wheat, amd the SWR Rickhouse! All have been fantastic! Definitley on on my favorites list! Cheers fam!🥃🥃
Wow samples of all 4 bottles on my hit list to try to get. Cheers 🥃
Was curious about this because I've seen glowing reviews and not-so-glowing. Nice to hear your perspective!
Glad it was helpful!
I wish I can get any of those around me
I have seen Holladay in the store many times and have been intrigued. Next time I see it, I will buy it and give it a try. Great video, Randy. I love your channel and I love the Show Philosophy segment at the end the best. You are bringing light into a world where darkness too often prevails. With each video, I say a prayer for your brother and you. God bless you, Randy. Keep up the great work. Peace!!
Wow! Thank you!
The only ones I have found are the BiB. Still on the Soft Red Wheat hunt.
This is a great review. I hope I find one.
Bought one off Seelbach’s. Good stuff.
I love the Ben Holladay offerings! SRW is my favorite so far
Cannot wait for the day that we get more variety of Holladay bottles here in Idaho.
I loved the BiB, hope to find the Cask Strength!
I usually prefer higher proof pours, but for this bottle I actually prefer the BiB over the barrel proof.
I enjoy the BiB of this one. Haven’t had the higher proof. 👍🏼
Love the Lot B!
I have one of these but I haven't cracked it yet. ust now seeing this video and will crack it tonight
Awesome, I will be getting one of these soon!
Let me know what you think when you do!
Just was at the distillery last week and picked up that bottle! Bar makes a great cocktails
That's great!
Have been enjoying their juice for a bit here in Indiana. Great information!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Holladay Soft Red Wheat is a great bourbon, one of my new favs. Drink it
The BIB is available near me for $60
Love the Ben Holladay products
haven't tried the Van Winkle line yet, maybe lucky enough to get some samples
When I saw this I figured you were going to talk about the Bourbon Lore edition like other whiskey tubers were doing yesterday. Interested to see what your take would be on that version. Thanks always for the great content cheers 🥃
Funny thing is I didn't even know about that until after I released this episode.
I've tried just the regular bouron Rickhouse Proof and it's very good!! I live in Colorado bout 4-5 months ago they were easy to find not seeing as much in stores as of late. My wife and I are driving to Nashville this June for anniversary trip we may stop by the distillery on way back 👍🏻😃🥃
I live near STL and most common grocery stores have the entire line up. I'd wager you can find them easy in MO. Costco even has the BIB.
On my bucket list
Amazing opportunity! Thank you.
My pleasure!
I like many of the Ben Holladay bourbons, need to retaste this one. Cheers Randy 🥃
Cheers!
Soft wheat beat Weller 107 in a blind I did. Can’t say it’s better, but that night it was better.
I've had the soft red wheat before and wasn't that big a fan, but that's just my palate. I tend to get a wheat funk note on most wheated whiskey that I don't enjoy.
I loved it when I first got into bourbon now it's a little off-putting that little funk
Yeah but I still want to try those fancy bottles. Thx for giving our dreams some hope with a sample.
My pleasure!
I’ve been wanting to get a bottle of these. It would be amazing to win this giveaway.
Good luck!
That ought to be an interesting giveaway. 🙂
Not too far from me and need to get there for a visit.
Let me know what you think when you do!
Great comparison
Thank you!
Hopefully I can find Ben Holladay in Australia 🥃
Love this giveaway...have an awesome day 🥃
Thanks, you too!
I will give it a try for sure
Let me know what you think.
Nice review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
As much as I like this, I just don't think this is a fair comparison. The Van Winkle is an elite bourbon that is hard to compare to anything. Maybe you should have tried Holladay's more limited items like the recent Ben Holladay Bourbon Lore 18 Barrel Blend, their Holladay Ancient Cave Collection, or maybe a Single Barrel (Store Pick).
I do think Holladay is a great bourbon and the BIB version is great and the Rickhouse version is well worth the money. If you come across any of these it is well worth the money for a bottle. And don't worry about the difference between the 6 year and 7 year BIB, it's not noticeable. Have a GREAT day!
I tried a number of the other limited offerings with Tim King over the weekend. We just didn't get a chance to film with them. I have to have a click bait title to get people to watch videos, so comparing something to PVW is a tactic that works. I do happen to find it a great wheated bourbon alternative to the BT wheated bourbon mash bill since it is fruity and not nutty.
@@BourbonRealTalk Please don't think I am being a "Thater" either. I see what you're saying with the PVW and views, its part of it.
The bourbon club that I'm in did a barrel pick and even the owner says that we got one of their best barrels that they have produced. That barrel is something special and I am glad I got a few bottles. Cheers! Oh and PLEASE bring Wes back every now and then.
@@beneller7791 Wes is coming Monday to record, but he won't be on camera.
Is that new music in the video or am I just noticing it after several videos that I’ve watched
The Monday and Wednesday episodes are edited by me. The Friday episodes are edited by Wes. I noticed he plays music quietly in the background when we start tasting, so I thought I would start doing the same.
Ben Holladay is doing great things.
Good video
Thanks for watching!
I’d love to win the samples. Good luck all cheers
Been seeing lots of comments about Holladay
My release of this video was completely coincidental. I didn't know the other channels were doing this collaboration. I wish I had been invited. Tim King who lives near the distillery stayed at my house over the weekend, and he gave me the bottle. Apparently he went by the distillery, told them he was meeting with me, and they gave him the bottle to give to me. A lot of distilleries offer me media bottles in hopes of getting a free review. I disclose when I am being paid. In this case I was not. You can also tell this was not a paid sponsorship because they would not have approved a script that included me saying it isn't as good as Weller and that the ethanol was off balanced.
Been watching a while, excellent. Umm,what #** is the other bottle
Bourbon Lore says they didn’t pay any “whisky tubers” but some compensation had to be given to get 3-4 of the major channels to give a review in this bottle all within 48-72 hours of each other. Sounds like great marketing and a plan to make sure they sell out. Congrats on doing just that! A massive success for this bottle launch.

I would never question your integrity, Randy! You doing an amazing job. I also don’t have any hate at all for them executing a marketing plan surrounding 3 to 4 whiskey UA-camrs that’s just smart. I trust your evaluation of this Bourbon only though. They sold out in minutes and executed a marketing strategy beautifully. Kudos to them.
I appreciate that!

Have seen every channel reviewing the Ben holliday
But none as descriptive as you

@@BourbonRealTalk very true . I really enjoy your in-depth research and facts you present with your evaluations of the spirits you try. Thank you
Feels like a whiskeytube pump going on with Ben Holiday lately. I have had many different versions and have visited the distillery. It’s good but in my opinion the excitement around it this week seems odd.
Yeah - every UA-camr is pumping this. They’re certainly spreading their money around. This is exactly what I dislike about whiskey UA-camrs. I really need to stop watching this stuff. Just feels dirty.
The only reason is there is a single barrel 7 year release by Holladay / Whiskey Lore. Randys review was just for Soft Wheat Rickhouse a different one

No.........
Have you tried it before?
Click bait
I do choose titles that are catchy, but how do you feel it is deceptive or misleading from the episode?
@@BourbonRealTalk it’s not misleading. Click bait doesn’t have to be. Solid video about a solid bottle. The bourbon lore pick comes on Monday.
Thanks for the video. Loved the history lesson. I like most everything Holladay makes.
