    • @tomhoremans2506
      @tomhoremans2506 3 місяці тому +2

      Absolutely 💯 agree about the rhythmic aspect of that phone sequence (I have often imagined Ren having a tiny metronome inside his head cos he’s always -almost freakishly- exactly right on time - you could even write sheet music for this tale and I’ll be you that that phone call would neatly fit right inside there within a nice even number of bars, I’m guessing 4 probably).
      But I also wanted to point out that Ren also keeps the rhyme going throughout the first part ot call (“you in”/ “listen”/ “can I swing”) and that in doing so he creates a stronger chaotic break with the second section of that call where he abandons rhythm & rhyme entirely (in spite of which he then still manages to end up right on cue for the guitar/music part that follows). Just try to tap your feet or wave your hand to the beat throughout this part to see what I’m trying to say here: nicely on beat at first, erratic chaos next, but still finishing it of perfectly on time for the following section… 🤯
      Doing this in a one take video, depending only on inner rhythm, is difficult to say the least. So that’s why I’ve added that little metronome I imagine inside of Ren’s head, to all his other incredible talents.
      Seriously, I have at times even had thought that Ren is not human even, an actual alien 👽 . But mostly I just think of him as an unusually gifted, multifaceted, genius Artist (he tell us not to forget he’s a human being after all 😂)..

    Great reaction! You're picking up things other reactors haven't, like the way he stays on beat even during spoken word. Also, one of the parts he's playing is that of a troubadour telling the story, coming to a town, blowing his trumpet to gather people 'round, and even smiling when he knows he's done well telling his story.

    In Wales, where Ren is from, there is a traditional meeting of poets and musicians called an Eisteddfod. Medieval travelling entertainers were called bards, and passed news, folklore, moral stories and political history to the populace, before the introduction of printing and before most people could read. The term bard comes from the Celtic for poet, and Ren has called this type of music and performance, Bardcore.
    Fun fact : Shakespeare is known as The Bard of Avon.

    "Jenny's Tale" was written in 2012. The original is on the album "Love Music" (2015). He released a new embellished version in 2019, followed by the continuation in "Sreech's Tale". He finished the trilogy with "Violet's Tale" in summer 2022. A week later he did a performance of the entire trilogy in the lot where they filmed "Screech's Tale". They recorded the show with 360 cameras that let you pan the video around. Search for "The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full 360 Live Performance)". He gives some of the story away while talking to the audience in that show, so it's not meant to be the introduction to the story.

    Ren really can weave a tale, making such dark subjects appear in such beautiful music. His acting out of characters in the tale, his use of the guitar to express the varying rhythms of each tale, and the lyrics that paint such a sharp picture with such broad strokes. Note: Tales of Jenny and Screech were made in 2019, Violets Tale, though made more recently, references 2005, 14 years before Jenny and Screech. Yes, generational violence. Violet’s silence passed down to her daughter Jenny. Stevie’s short fuse and violence passed down to Screech. A truly sad, but all too often true, tale. Ren just shining a light on real life, real issues, once again.

    I might be wrong but maybe the word your searching for is jaunty. His bardcore style is very reminiscent of the style of the minstrels of medieval times. And so even though the subject matter is dark, the style is quite uplifting and entertaining to watch. So jaunty would be a very accurate description 🤔 😂

    The humor almost seems like the minstrel interjects it to distance himself emotionally in order to be able to tell the tale. The little breath intake and shrug inViolet’s tale were like he needed to brace himself to sing about it. I also think Ren thickened his accent to evoke a minstrel from a seedier part of London where a 14 year old girl does her work in high heels. It might also to be to hint at older times. Very clever work.

    I really like your description of Ren as a 'rap minstrel' in this piece, sums it up perfectly. I think he toy's with us a bit with the guitar sounding upbeat, even a bit jolly, while the tales get darker and darker. I'm so glad he added Violet's tale (a couple of years later) to really bring it full circle.
    For me the cycle of abuse and violence so graphically acted out was extremely difficult to watch and hear the first few times and I had to limit my number of views. However, Ren has got people thinking and talking about this uncomfortable truth without watering it down or making judgement about the characters involved. It's another remarkable piece.

    It’s a difficult thing to see and hear. You might be looking for the word ‘pathos’ when you say ‘comedy/irony’ but far be it from me to dictate what you mean! Also, you mentioned it was kind of ‘minstrel + rap’ and I think Ren himself coined the term ‘Bardcore’ which is literally perfect!

    Great reaction! I think your take on humor is a good example of how the word comedy has evolved.
    In the past, a comedy was more about the unexpected twist that brought things full circle than it was about being "funny." That's why they Tragic Comedies.
    I, too, find humor when I get a little uncomfortable.
    Also, Ren uses a very uplifting beat when he describes the abuse. It creates a weird conflict of emotions.

For me, the reason this story is important is that it shows Ren's empathy to the human condition which he has developed from his hardship. It shows Ren's genius as a story teller and shows his compassion (he composed a musical tragic story to honor the memory of people whose lives are tragically ended). I believe he points out in his "Eden" video how our current system is lacking and that mankind should exercise their gift of Free Will and turn this hell on earth into a better place. 🙂❤

  • @kennethmichael5404
    @kennethmichael5404 3 місяці тому +4

    SO much to take in with this brilliant Shakespearean tragedy. I get frustrated with some reactions when it's missed how he describes Jenny....why would a 14 year old be walking the same street a 1000 times, in high heel shoes? Almost no one seems to catch that. Also, for "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. There's sheer brilliance in the line "please let my baby stay alive"....at this point you don't yet know that it's twins, but "baby" followed by "stay" can also be read as "babies" because the S in "stay" isn't necessarily separate from "baby". Say it out loud- you'll understand what I mean. Such a clever way to hide the twist reveal while still giving it up at the same time...if you can catch it. Brilliant.Powerful stuff. In "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance too....and btw, Ren is self taught on the guitar. Just one of many instruments he plays including drums, bass, & piano.The man is truly special. A prodigy.
    From what I understand, he wrote the first 2 songs after reading an article about a very young man murdering a young woman in London, he didn't write "Violet's Tale" until a few years later and that one was of his own making. He said that there are 2 songs so far that he wrote, that he knew in his gut were special. "Hi Ren" (of course) and "Violet's Tale". (He was right on both counts imo.)

    • @Monica-sw9ld
      @Monica-sw9ld 3 місяці тому

      Also figure in the fact that Violet was almost certainly beaten and withheld prenatal or medical care of any kind during the entire pregnancy. All of that has an effect on the development of the babies. Add twins to that and wow... I'm surprised she made it to 9 months. Poor Violet didn't make it past it, though.
      I'm not convinced Jenny was a prostitute. 14 yr old girls wear 'high heels' for lots of reasons, but not like stilettos or anything. He refers to the girls as ladies, possibly to throw us off the reality that they were just children, too. But I saw Jenny as I saw myself at 14. Walking to get out of the house, even getting a part time job cleaning or something. That's how I saw her. A quiet girl who just wanted a better life. 🤷‍♀️

    '"Staying Light-Hearted?" Bit difficult! As Ren says; "This isn't entertainment; it's real life."
    Ren is a very Deliberate and Powerful Social Commentator as well as a multi-talented creative artist, and he utilises a lot of diverse approaches to tell a story. The stories he tells are often uncomfortable truths. Things we are inclined to look - or click - away from. We murmur vague meaningless platitudes; like " Oh what a shame..." and then flick to something 'more entertaining'. They vanish so quickly within the 24 hr unrelenting News Cycle. Ren says; No! Stop! LOOK at this. These lives are important. We KNOW why innocents like Jenny, Violet, and Screech too, get onto pathways that lead them to becoming victims and/or perpetrators. He leaves the big question hanging... "Why aren't we doing more to stop this stuff from happening?" He brings us right into the frame- up close. Ren wants us to 'Stand Witness' to these tragedies. He wants us to care- just as he does.

    Thank you Jess for doing this one (and for anyone else reading check out Jess’s pay-tree-on and show her some more support). Me of my first thoughts on this song was of the travelling minstrel vibe too, Ren is definitely a storyteller and performer as well as a musician. While he does tackle some uncomfortable subjects I find he does it in a way that’s not meaning to shock but that you take notice and think about the subject.
    He has some less intense songs that are as good (it’s alright) and also can show the goofball side of him (what you want).
    Keep up the great channel, your smiles, laughs and even tears at times show us how much music can move someone and thanks for sharing that with us 🙂.

    Yes, generational violence. Which started in tale with father of Violet abusing her and her mother not coping. One interesting point the government allowed her to live on her own. Could she have been pregnant by her father when she got government help rather then rather then being fostered by someone on an emergency basis.
    Why was the prick so upset maybe because he knew she was pregnant before he met her. Still doesn’t make his violence right. He should have been supporting her not beating her.
    Yes the twins were separated at birth to foster or adoption. So they lived separate life’s till that fateful day.
    A tragedy of generational violence worthy of the Greek Tragedies or the Bard himself, Shakespeare. A warning to modern society not to ignore the issues.
    It’s such shame.

      There is no "cou;ld" about it, Violey's father IS the twins father. She was ablle to collect welfare because she was already pregnant when she left home, and Stevie knew the math wasn't mathin' when he repeatedly asked "Why you lying to me Violet?"

    Finally got to see it. It was worth the wait. You seem a bit tougher about the subject matter than many reactors I have seen. People often break in Violets tale. Nothing wrong with that, just an observation. Makes me wonder how hard the rainfall was. Loved your reaction and you company. Thank you.

    I think if you wanted to to revisit it & "pick it apart" people would really enjoy that. You made some interesting points. Animal Flow by Ren also has so much to take in because there are many references to cult films ( Clockwork Orange, Willy Wonka, The Shining, Witches of Eastwick, Silence of the Lambs) & cult classic novels ( Lord of the Flies, Wind in the Willows, Animal Farm).

    Boy, that’s a rough one. Another reactor noticed that 2005 was a year. I thought it was a zip code. He started the trilogy in 2019 which makes the twins 14, like he ID’d Screech near the beginning. Rewind the hands of time….

      @@flowersafterrainfall yeah, he wound it up to the past then down back where it started. He’s so locked in on the smallest details. Can’t remember where but you called something art that most would call music. That’s spot-on :)

    Don’t be too hard on yourself cos this reaction isn’t as ‘emotional’ as others of yours I’ve seen. Too close too home, too near the bone: just coping mechanisms kicking in probably, no?
    I have often seen a familiar sort of sadness in your eyes and a fragility in your smiles and laughter, that I meself from personal experience, tend to associate with trauma. I could be wrong about this, so no offence meant there. Tbh it’s one of the characteristics of your facial expressions that makes me relate to your reactions so strongly (no matter what or who made you the way you are).
    Your fragile smile at times has warmed my heart but has just as often brought tears to my eyes, if that makes sense…
    Anyway, you do you, most of us love you just as you are. You have a beautiful soul. And even if it might be somewhat broken by life as i suggested, that to me only makes it even more beautiful, unique and (as said) relatable… 💜

    Screech killed his sister. When Screech knocked on Patrick's door, he wasn't home, he was with Screech's girlfriend, thus why she said she was busy. Everything is intentional and he did all 3 videos as a One Take. It took numerous takes, but each were all filmed in one take
