Schefflera arboricola care and propagation in soil and water (with updates)

- Hailing from Taiwan and parts of Hainan in Southern China, the schefflera arboricola (also known as the dwarf umbrella tree), is a beautiful foliage plant widely used in landscaping. It is easy to care for and can attain either a tree-like shape, or a bush-like one should you prune it often. In this video I share with you the care tips as well as the propagation in soil and in water (with updates at the end of the video as usual).

Thanks, informative as usual! After several years, my large variegated Schefflera stopped growing. It wasn't dying, but for 6 months or more, it didn't show any signs of growth at all. I repotted it, fed it, gave it more light, all the things. It just sat there like it was in a coma. I was just about to give up on it, but gave it one last chance and cut the top half off. Within a month it had sent out several new branches, and has since more than doubled in size. Now I know I should have chopped it sooner!

Tks for showing the propagation of schefflera. I bought a big pot with a lot of individual rooted ones. I Potted all those rooted ones. The smaller ones all died. 4 rooted ones survived. The parent one almost failed.
I stuck a mature green form with a woody stem into my fish tank situated in low light as an experiment. Lost the roots, lost about a foot of the stem from rot and chops, but it eventually stopped rotting and started to grow roots. It’s a happy camper now and does a good job sucking up all those nitrates with its hefty water roots 😁 i give the baby leaves tiny high fives too 😂
I seriously love that you always follow up on your propagations! That is the real worth and makes your videos so much better than all the others who just tell you what they do without ever showing proof of concept later.

In South Florida, they are a landscape staple. You find bushes in a lot of the houses. They definitely can take full sun.
I have a regular green one. It's about 30 years old and huge. Was my hubby's father's plant, now I look after it. I've taken many propogations to share and just in case something happens to the parent plant. I find it quite easy to care for and propogate.
I have always liked the fragrance these plants give off when you prune them.
I actually rooted one all green petiole in perlite, I was surprised it worked, took quite awhile but worked. Love the variegated one.
In Greece they are common indoor outdoor plants! You can literally find them everywhere!

This plant it's the easiest plant to propagate. I do put even wooden stick in water and grows for me every time
All of my nose cuts rooted quickly. 3-4 new leaves right away. Faster than any of my other plants. 181 plants at my tattoo studio. 89 plants at home. I need to downsize so I can focus on tattooing.
My leaf clipping with no nodes didn’t root but lasted in a jar of water for 3-4 months in my bathroom on a shelf until all the leaves started falling off. Basically just good for decorating if there’s no node.

Thanks for this video! I had similar experience a couple years back with mine. Tried leaves, and cuttings had a bout 50% success rate and shared them. I'm sure you had better success! Stay safe and sane! Hope moving and nursery going well.

Lol you are too cute. I just got an umbrella plant from my mom and it was extremely root bound so i have just separated the plant and trimmed some of the roots before repotting. You're right they are stunning, I'm in love. But I'm trying to learn the best way to make it look fuller and not so leggy. So glad i found your videos. 😀

I think your plant needs repotting to a larger pot to grow better. This is one of my favourite plants. The more you cut the branches the more new branches it grows from where you cut it. One branch turns into 3-4 branches. And you can propose the cut branch and have 2 plants...
Mine has like 10-15 branches and almost 1metre tall. I planted it into a huge pot...😍🌴
Yeahhh they can turn quickly into a shrub!
i have one of these in my ball pythons enclosure, but it only has about 16 in of height to grow, so ill assume ill have do do a bit of pruning here when it gets bigger

ahh I wish mine would develop a woody stem like yours, I just have long green canes and they're starting to flop over. Might try to chop off the heads like you did!
Ooo try increasing fertilizer. Potassium may help with their trunk health.
I just got one of these and the under leaf had brown veins under the leaves. I'm not sure what that means.
Love this video! Will definitely try to propagate my schefflera. Any tips on what to do when the leaves are shedding so much. When I move it even just a little bit, a lot of leaves falls off. They are also curling and turning brown 😞

Hello Sean! Though this video is quite short it is as always, very informative. I saw that you used a commercial rooting hormone. Can I used cinnamon powder instead? Coz I've read and a lot and even watched videos of other plant enthusiasts about using cinnamon powder as a good rooting hormone. Thank in advance for your reply.
Some people swear by cinnamon powder Im sure they work wonders too 😀

I have seen them grown to large size it looked so pretty in a large red plant container because of the yellow ,green and red combination
I find that when I up pot If a nod goes under the soil level, I lose the leaf. Hopefully, they will replaced with new roots.
Yea I think roots are more important than leaves for the longevity of the plant
For me that is a very difficult plant to propagate, I have one green and is bushy and big [outdoors] so i tried to propagate it but never worked [i don't have hormone roots 🤔] maybe that would help, anyway. ..good luck!
Soil propagation with some direct light (but not too much) seem to be the sweet spot for me 😀

Can i cut these all the way down to the ground and have them grow back? I have a hedge of these out front that have become really branchy looking and im not 100% with the way they look and thought that maybe cutting them all the way down they would regrow with more leaf growth
I would leave a few nodes instead of all the way down. After you cut most of the foliage off be sure to water them wayyyyy less as the water now has nowhere to go and can easily rot the roots.
Hi! My neighbor gave me a HUGE cutting of a large variegated schefflera. It’s like 8 ft tall and has a huge stem. Parts are flowering. I’m hoping if I put rooting hormone on the bottom and cut away lots of bottom stems, it will root but it’s so huge I don’t know if that will make it harder or easier to propagate. It looks like a tree already. What do you think? Any one have advice?
I would cut off as many vines/leaves as possible. Rooting hormone is a good idea. Did your neighbour give you tips? It seems like they might know better how to propagate something thats already a tree. You can also take some younger stems to propagate as insurance

Water is the best way?
Depends on the condition of the aerial roots of each cuttings. I have a video on florida ghost care and propagation in my channel, I did both soil and water propagation there 😀
Sir, post-repotting there's been no new growth on my schefflera plant. What should I do?
1: rule out pests
2: increase light
3: fertilize lightly
4: make sure the roots hasnt rotten or dried off
What soil mixture and ratio would you used to repot?
I have never measured ratio before but the ingredients are in my video titled “general potting mix”

Either osmocote slow release fertilizer, or furadan a very controversial chemical pesticide 😅
Can I use "cactus, palm & citrus" soil with this plant?
Yes you can but if you give it very strong light and good airflow you may end up watering it very often. Potentially every day.
@@onlyplants Thanks. I went ahead and planted it in the ground with the "citrus, palm, cactus" soil anyway. I planted it in a spot that only gets about an hour of direct sunlight in the morning and then lots of bright, indirect light for the rest of the day. I live on the central coast of California, so I think it will be OK. I just hope the ground/dirt around the area will allow the roots to spread out over the years to come. 🤞
I've had my Schefflera in a huge pot for about 20 years and FINALLY had the chance to plant it into the ground! I'm SO excited to see how it will grow from here on out! It's been a hearty plant for about 31 years, over all, in my care!!! Would love to see it grow for at least another 30! ;-D

If you haven’t already, try giving it more light while propagating;-)
@@mrsnigraham7269 I did :/ I think it's just prone to rot. I'll consider getting it again but I wont try to force it to be semi hydro. But idk, kind of trying to only get plants that can be grown in semi hydro.
Ooo maybe it doesnt like a semi hydro set up? i find soil prop to be the most effective for these because my previous water propagation was a disaster
Have you found any plant that will not root if put directly into soil? I have always rooted cuttings in water but you are causing me to rethink that. Just wondering...
Nearly all my propagationg root faster and grow better in soil. 😅
Just so you know you can propagate leaf/petiole cuttings of these guys, I have 4 plants from petiole props 😊 that's how I do mine in water rather than cutting the main stem 💚

Nope not for me.... I never really vibed to these plants but especially now after listening about their care. Thank you for that..I like dogs too but find them too needy..I love cats 🐈 ♥ way more independent.
You can root the leaves in water don't throw it.
