I find it hilarious how my ice pick headaches are caused as punishment for not sleeping enough, yet the ice pick headache stops me from sleeping enough
I think this was what I experienced this week. It occured 3 times I think, and lasted for like 2 or 3 seconds, maybe more on one instance. Ice pick pain is indeed an exact description. What worries me really was its like sudden, coming out of nowhere. May I add, I admit im the worrier, overthinking type, and has been under stress lately.
I started getting these headaches for a year now. I have headaches my whole life since I was a little girl. I have all types of headaches throbbing pounding constant and migraines where light is painful. But these headaches right here are crazy. There is no where to run or place ice to alleviate them. Lately I've been getting a headache for a week and then this ice pick headache immediately following and they last 2 days. This is horrible because you just want to feel normal again. You want to be able ro function like a normal person. Praying for all you fellow sufferers
Had a neurological exam yesterday and my doctor sent me home without a diagnosis. Getting these random stabbing pains all over my head/skull. Some focused in my temples, others completely random. Had a baby two months ago and obviously haven't been getting quality sleep. Good to know there are some things I can try as I was sent home with no pain medication.
These headaches are getting on my nerves. I don’t know if it’s because of all this stress in my life or what, but I’ve never experienced headaches like this before, and it’s always on the right side of my head in one place.

Little to no sleep and burnout caused that headache. Once i finally quit that second job and let my body rest it went away over the next few days and i haven't had a migraine since.
If you change your sleeping pattern (like me hence why I’m here) it usually happens, I’ve had this a few times now and it goes away in like a day after you fix your sleeping pattern/adjust to a new sleeping pattern.
I went from sleeping through the day and being awake through the night, to flipping that over 2 days by staying awake an extra 4 hours per day, the ice pick headaches have been here for a week and they are pretty brutal xd
these videos are so helpful for me not to overthink when suddenly i get zaps on my head the entire day. i've experienced ice pick headaches before but not as long as a day and this made me panic a little. after some reading, i thought it could be because of my work shift (10pm-6am) and sleep time which is now during the day. i'll try to make changes in my sleep and diet and hope that this goes away asap
Just came on here and seen this this happens to me however today was the first day I have ever experienced ip headaches all day long genuinely now they have gone been left with and ache on the side of temple but I agree with the sleep as my sleep has not been grate
@@Fabzcili how are you now. I have been having this since February. After a dentist appointment. But now I think it unrelated to the dentist. Maybe stress. I woke up last night and boy was the pain unbearable. It went from my right side head down to my eye. It lasted maybe 5 seconds. Horrible. Calling the doc tomorrow
Like clock work I get these (always behind my left eye), either a week or two before period. I usually have a tingling on left side of head, arm, or left side of body before it hits. It sucks, I take excedrin migraine, it goes away somewhat for two hours then comes right back. Thankfully they last two to three days tops and I don't get nauseous much so I can go to work, although my work output isn't so good.
Yes I'm really averse to being specific about diagnoses because in reality they all blend together and its more important to find out what is breaking the brain. Do they come in short spurts?
Migraine Professional I’ve been getting them for roughly 20 years (now 46 years old). I used to rarely get them (couple times a year maybe) and now probably a few a day for the last few months. I figured it due to stress.
Thank you so much for this great video. Ice Pick headaches are unusual and most GPs will scratch their heads about it. I’m lucky enough to be in Little Rock Arkansas where I see my neurologist at UAMS, a cutting edge research facility. Three years ago I was told to take melatonin before bedtime. I started with a low-dose and now I’m up to 15 mg a night. Taking melatonin has definitely stopped the majority of my ice pick headaches. I only have about one or two per year now whereas I used to get several each month. if I miss doses of melatonin the ice pack headaches come back.
@@MByesman Hello. So sorry I didn't answer right away. In Little Rock, AR my headache specialist is Dr. Lucchese at UAMS and I highly recommend him. He's very likable, very good at listening to what you have to say and understanding what your needs are. I have a complex situation with my headaches because the causes of my headaches include concussions, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. Dr. Lucchese has been able to address all of my different kinds of headaches while treating me as a whole person and keeping my general wellness in mind. There is one thing you can do that may back off or limit ice pick headaches and that is to take 5 mg or more of melatonin at night. Sublingual tablets are recommended. I came across this information many years ago and I asked Dr. Lucchese about it and was it still considered to be useful in limiting ice pick and lightening headaches. He agreed that it's worth trying for anyone with these types of terribly painful headaches. The original study for using melatonin to stop ice pick headaches was done in the UK. That study used 5 mg of melatonin per night. I have found for myself that 12 mg works better and, if I remember to always take it each night, I can go for five months or more without an ice pick or lightning headache. Good luck, I wish you well.
I had an ice pick headache a week ago. It left me a cold shivering body and so much anxiety after an attack! Immediately called my doctor and he doesn't seem concern about it. But my mind keeps telling me that there might be something wrong with my brain and i'm scared af. It's been a week now. It's on and off though. I observed that I get them when i'm anxious, in bad posture, lack of sleep, stressed and dehydrated. I've already told 5 doctors about it and they seem not concerned about it. They just asked me to observe it.
@@MigraineProfessional I do have health anxiety. And this new symptom is really a big factor to put my anxiety thru the roof! I really hate when I get them. I'd always think about aneurysm, brain tumor or whatever deadly diseases!
@@MigraineProfessional thanks for that! As what my doctor said, I would have to note down 50 more symptoms before we jump to those deadly diseases i've mentioned. He said that ice pick headache alone is a very non-specific symptom to give a diagnosis. He even assured me that it is just a transient symptom and nothing to worry about. He just advised me to take Vitamin C, have enough sleep, relax and keep myself well hydrated
@@cosxofanny8563 I also suffer from health anxiety really bad and have been suffering from ice pick headaches since late September 😣...it’s really not fun...doctor told me to monitor it and keep a journal of how often I get them but don’t seem to concerned about it. I’m 15 and just started having daily ice pick headaches. It gets so bad where I have to stop driving etc. I have migraines but they aren’t as common. I also have pressure there everyday at all times even when I’m not having the ice pick pains.
Thank you for this video.🙏 I get this when I don’t sleep well I noticed they come on more. It’s always my left eye and my left temple it’s that sharp stabbing pain that’s consistent.
these come and go with my migraines, Dr told me last year its just my anxiety, i only started believing them when they happened rarely when i wasn't having a hard time with my anxiety
@Andrew Batal Having a holistic health practitioner assess you is integral to any kind of mental/emotional connection because remaining unbiased to your own thoughts and feelings is very difficult
Thanks for the video! Iv'e been struggling with this for the past 15 years as an adult. When it first started I would have multiple IP headaches a day. They would be very random but as I got older, a couple years into them I started with anxiety/depression/panic attacks. Once I got on meds for those the IP headaches reduced to couple times a year. Now 15 years later Im still on meds but still get IP headaches about 5 times a month. Usually when I get up from a seated position to standing. I am happy with the mental health meds that I'm on so I guess I will just deal with them as they come. I usually get about a 10 second warning before they come on so I can excuse myself to another room to deal with it so I'm not embarrassed in front of others. It just sucks.
I started getting these headaches 7 months ago, my chiropractor adjusted my neck and it took away the headaches for 2 months but one week I got overly stressed out and they came back. I used to get migraines and puke after as a child. I know now that inflammation is the main factor, I just got to figure out what’s causing the inflammation!
I get these when im stressed or have a lack of sleep. Also usually in the pain area, I have a pimple or an ingrown hair. When I touch it, it triggers the pain. Is this the case for anyone else?
I don’t think what I had was an ice pick headache but it’s all I can find. It definitely felt like something was stabbing the side of my brain but it was constant and didn’t go away for a whole night. This was the worst pain I think I’ve ever experienced and never had a headache that bad before.
I have a really bad case of the flu right now and i have severe pain in my temples from these headaches, like every 5 seconds its instant 10 pain, it is extremely uncomfortable and every cough triggers it as well as it coming in waves by itself.
I have started having these a month ago. No idea what cause, never had anything like this before. My doc diagnosed trigeminal neuralgia but I think it's primary stabbing headache instead. So I'm currently on nerve blockers when I reckon I should be on anti-inflammatory meds. Thankfully going to see a neurologist in two weeks so hopefully can get a specialist second opinion and fixed up soon.
Update: Saw a neurologist who diagnosed primary stabbing headache and prescribed an Indomethacin trial. The Indomethacin has proven quite effective for me, supporting the diagnosis of primary stabbing headache. But unfortunately I'm experiencing some side effects of nausea which are pretty bad. I have to admit that I'm rapidly becoming depressed and more stressed, sometimes the pain is so bad that I feel I can't cope. The neurologist is organising a MRI scan soon just to make sure nothing else is going on, but I don't know when yet. Feeling very nervous for that.
@@AYUSHPandey-wx4jk Hey. So what happened was my MRI scan came back clear, and my diagnosis was definitely Primary Stabbing Headache (aka ice pick headache). I was on the Indomethacin for six weeks. My last headache was 22nd October 2020 - and I don't just mean the medication stopped me feeling them, I mean I actually stopped getting the headaches. So in total I experienced the headaches from 28th July to 22nd October, about 3 months. My neurologist says that so little is known about these headaches that they could come back tomorrow, or never. I was also diagnosed with stress/anxiety shortly after, and the neurologist says it is possible, though he cannot prove it, that my attacks were caused by stress.

I started getting these in 2019 after my third concussion. Left temple area sharp pain. On and off throughout the day. Started again last night. Been on and off all day today. This doesn’t happen often. Last time was around August last year.
I've had ice pick headaches on and off the last three years in the right side of my head. Recent got thunderclap headaches with double vision plus bad ice pick headaches. Went to the er and I have an AVM in the brain.
Generally, its thought to be because one of the cranial nerves are affected like the trigeminal nerve. But because it connects directly into the brainstem there can be multiple causes at play
@@MrRamirez1808 Anything that affects the brainstem so anything affecting the autonomic functioning of the body and putting stress on it there. The base mechanisms like breathing, heart rate, peristalsis etc which is why its tricky. Could also just be a mechanical problem
I never get headaches, today was my first time I got Ice Pick headache. The pain was really painful, painful enough to jitter my whole head and eye. Before getting the Icepick headache I slept for really long time maybe 10h-12h, I wonder if they are connected somehow.
I've been getting them for a few years now, very scary. I've noticed that for me personally, the causes are: 1. Lack of Sleep, 2. Circadian Rhythm Changes, 3. High Sodium/Carb Foods. I was getting them way more earlier this year, but i've focused on sleeping more and eating clean (keto), and I rarely get them now. When I do get them, from time to time, it's whenever my Circadian rhythm gets messed up (i.e. I stay up all night, or sleep in too much, or travel overseas to a different timezone), or when I eat high Sodium/Carb foods. Had MRI's, but they can't find anything. I've also wondered if it could be nerve related, or somehow related to hypertension, but there doesn't seem to be much online about that.
It’s weird because I get these ice pick headaches every year around September/October every year since I turned 40. Still not sure why they go away and then come back a year later. They are very annoying and I have no idea what’s causing them.
Ice pick headaches runs in the family. Sometimes I can ignore it but at it worst, the pain jolts my body and the pain seems to migrate around the back of my head. It last around 2 weeks.
adding Chelated Magnesium helped mine for a few years. They're suddenly back. I haven't been taking it for awhile. Just started again because IP headaches came back.
I didn't knew what just hit me, probably this Ice pick headache. A very sharp pain from the back of my head, then it moved to the front of my head (left side). Gonna be frank,it almost knocked me out.
Yes. I get them for weeks at a time, randomly several times a day. Then i won't get them for a while. Then they return. They are short, but awful. i worry that it is trigeminal neuralgia.
I don't suffer from migraines and I only get what I think is ice pick headaches when I have the flu. They last typically a few days and I get a few stabs per minute or so in either my left or right temple. Paracetamols don't seem to reduce the pain so it's really a mystery what causes them.
Mine started one year ago, I thought I was having an aneurysm and mine are caused from cold weather, I am currently moving down to South Texas because I can't handle feeling like I'm having an aneurysm every time cold hits me.
Wait so would a history of anxiety and high worry/stress levels be a cause for ice pick headaches? Or does it always have to be something extremely traumatic such as hitting your head really hard or severe brain damage/ something really serious?

I was infected with HSV-1 last summer. There have been many minor herpes reactivations in the past 6 months. During these reactivations (in some unlucky people), the virus first reaches the nervous system and then the brain. Then, it spreads to many small areas in the brain and the inflammation process begins. And for about 6 months, I started getting these pains for the first time in my life. Afterwards, inflammation attacks that increase with insomnia bring on these stabbing pains. And now what we need is an MRI with contrast and a neurologist who can interpret the results well. Because at the end of this process, plaques begin to form in our brain and depending on the severity of inflammation in people who will have MS over the years. Please investigate how HSV-1 reaches the brain and initiates a chronic inflammatory process there. I am very sorry that I was infected with this virus

If you change your sleeping pattern (like me hence why I’m here) it usually happens, I’ve had this a few times now and it goes away in like a day after you fix your sleeping pattern/adjust to a new sleeping pattern.
this really explains it, i've been sleeping at awful hours and they came back!
I went from sleeping through the day and being awake through the night, to flipping that over 2 days by staying awake an extra 4 hours per day, the ice pick headaches have been here for a week and they are pretty brutal xd

Same here right behind my left eye and that left temple. It’s horrible
I get these in the back left side of my head all the time. Same description... but in the back left always.

Which neurologist did you see?
They just asked me to observe it.
yep its a very common way of handling it because they have no tools for dealing with it specifically

I get these every few months...for many years. This week they freaked me out because i kept on thinking about it and over thinking just ruins your day
Thanks for the video!
I was woke up at 5 to one, I borderline cried because of it, it also felt like it lasted for more than a minute, maybe 5
I started getting these headaches 7 months ago, my chiropractor adjusted my neck and it took away the headaches for 2 months but one week I got overly stressed out and they came back. Are you still getting them. My dad is experiencing these
Yes right by my right temple
Me too I am experiencing that since yesterday
I don’t think what I had was an ice pick headache but it’s all I can find. It definitely felt like something was stabbing the side of my brain but it was constant and didn’t go away for a whole night. This was the worst pain I think I’ve ever experienced and never had a headache that bad before.
Same here bro we should go together for check up to find a logical conclusion about our situation😅

I get these. I got an mri and it was normal so idk why this happens. Does anyone expirience pressure in the spot of pain
Generally, its thought to be because one of the cranial nerves are affected like the trigeminal nerve. But because it connects directly into the brainstem there can be multiple causes at play
Like what??
@@MrRamirez1808 Anything that affects the brainstem so anything affecting the autonomic functioning of the body and putting stress on it there. The base mechanisms like breathing, heart rate, peristalsis etc which is why its tricky. Could also just be a mechanical problem
The spot in my temple is sensitive to touch. If I push on it, it hurts like a bruise.

I didn't knew what just hit me, probably this Ice pick headache.

Gonna be frank,it almost knocked me out.
Yes. I get them for weeks at a time, randomly several times a day. Then i won't get them for a while. Then they return. They are short, but awful. i worry that it is trigeminal neuralgia.
Hey ..how did you get rid of this
I don't suffer from migraines and I only get what I think is ice pick headaches when I have the flu.
All of the above, our body is very interconnected in its function

How are u know. Have u concern this with your doctor

When I hit the 2nd trimester I started getting jabs all over my head and mainly on my left, they aren't painful just let's me know they are there, I'm nearly at the end of my pregnancy now, I had almost 5 months of them, they went away for a week but now they are back
So sorry are you better now
