Very interesting to hear Merkel with a BACH fugue on Anloo, three styles coming together in one fine rendition. Well done, Christopher!
As Graham mentions, it would be very interesting to hear it on a romantic organ too, but no pressure here ;)

Beautifully played, Christopher! I really enjoyed listening to your interpretation of this. Your registration and phrasing is crystal clear to bring out the voices, too! Fabulous!

Paul, I thank you for your kind comments about this piece. Using the Anloo sample set, I cannot hide behind big reverberant acoustics though it can leave me feeling quite exposed. The piece itself has so many characteristics of music written in a period earlier than that of the composer's, so I just went with what I felt. There are lovely iterations of this in a more legato style out there to enjoy, of course, and to which this one simply adds an alternative. I appreciate your thoughtful words and I look forward to your own next recording. Cheers.

I first came across Gustav Merkel's organ music when I started to learn to play the instrument in my early teens and one of the tutor books presented to me was "The Progressive Organist" (C. H. Trevor) which featured a few of Merkel's shorter compositions. I loved his music then and I love this performance by you, Christopher, of his Fugue on Bach. I was really interested to hear an interpretation with detached articulation rather than legato playing. It works brilliantly on the Anloo sample set with its crisp voicing and direct acoustic. Of course, your playing is always so musical and a real joy to experience! I would have been fascinated to hear you make a 'duel' presentation with this upload - this recording and then, for example, a second performance on the Salisbury Cathedral sample set with a romantic interpretation and legato playing. The truly wonderful thing about the organ is that it offers the performer such a wealth of choices when bringing a piece of music to life . . . and no-one does that better than you. B R A V O !

Unlike you, Graham, I had not been exposed to the works of Merkel until I found this piece in, yes, a C.H. Trevor collection that I fairly recently inherited from another organist. Thanks for your comments about my somewhat unconventional take on the fugue in terms of articulation and choice of virtual instrument. While I appreciate a purist approach to music as I enjoy hearing/playing pieces as they may have been originally conceived, I do find interest in alternate interpretations from time to time for a change of pace.

@@christopherglenn3240 I agree totally with your point about alternate interpretations. I am no 'purist' and I value ALL interpretations because the music only has meaning when brought to life by the performer. I want to hear the performer's take . . . not the performer delivering what might be expected by convention. That is why I love your playing so much. I always hear you, the person I respect and admire so much, when I hear you play. So again: bravo!

Love your Baroque interpretation! It sounds very appropriate. Is this a stand alone piece or prelude-fugue set?

Hi Enjoy. Thanks for your nice note. The best I can tell, it was a stand alone piece, Opus 40.
