- I’m so glad to finally be back on UA-cam. This is a video essay that has been 9 months in the making, on-and-off, and definitely my largest project yet. If you don't like harsh critiques of Mariah, do not read ahead...
These last couple years have been insanely frustrating as a lamb tbh. She shouldn't be figuring out her vocal technique on the stage - she should be working on it behind the scenes in the months before a tour so that she's ready to sing on Day 1 of the tour. She shouldn't be lipping entire concerts like she did last Christmas (the sections she did live, which you played, were pretty much the only live sections in the entire concert). She shouldn't be lying about music and projects coming when they aren't, like the Butterfly Lounge or the collabs or the several albums she has teased. She shouldn't have bragged about her voice being in tip-top shape during the pandemic, because as soon as she hit the stage it was in even worse shape than 2019, and it has yet to recover since. I know her voice is different now and that is to be expected, but she basically just gave up after COVID. I've always had my criticisms of how she has navigated her vocal issues, but at least she was actually getting on stage and singing before. Sad to say that my expectations couldn't be any lower at this point, so maybe she'll surprise me again someday. I mean, how can she watch someone like Patti Labelle sing LTT as a tribute to her own legendary status, fully live and healthy and impressive, and then a month later go on stage and lip/talk-sing her way through the same song? She is a brilliant musician. No matter how bad her voice gets, she can get creative and do better than that.

She can't sing anymore. She only whispers some words and so. She's so narcisit to admit that her voice has been gone a while ago.
She should seriously take speech therapy to figure out how to work with her nodules, and re learn how to sing with them. Plus, I know it must be a blow to her confidence, but she needs to rearrange her songs and change the keys so she can actually sing them live. I don't expect her to fully ditch partial lipping, but she used to leave moments for her to attempt live moments when she was feeling it.
Her musicality is still as impressive as ever, her instrument has changed and she hasn't to work with it.
She still has a lot of her range there, and her tone, when healthy, is still beautiful.

I really hope she's still confident with her voice. Actually her tone and mid belt is much stronger than 2022 and it gave a sense of darkness(in a nice way). But still, we really want to hear full live version of VOL in the future...I believe this means a lot for her fans...and for herself too🦋
I love that she's no longer wasting time trying to prove that's “she's still got it” with trying to sing it like she used too and is embracing her new fuller deeper tone since the one and all tour and hearing her sing “it's like that” in original key and not growling to get a higher note gagged me I was like oh wow Mariah is putting in work on her voice she was doing fluid vocal lines with vibrato and all and even though her sound on yes and was controversial Mariah was singing her ass off on there
The key to me is confidence and exercising/touring
In 2018 she was touring way more and in 2019 as well, resulting in superb vocals in late 2019
We are currently in June 2024 and she’s on the path of selling out a stadium in Brazil this fall while still lip synching a whole set list lol

I love the honesty becuase people love using the age exscuse for her sometimes terrible vocals and lip syncing. I just want Mariah to sound comfortable and be creative with her voice.
Well I am a doctor and the change of the voice starting in around 30 years of age for women is a medically proven fact. The vocal chords never stop growing just like cartilage in the nose but the space of the larynx does not change meaning everything gets more loose and the folds oscillate (because what they do is oscillate not vibrate) easier even when unintended. Folds are a very small part of singing, not an inconsequential one but a small one. The biggest are breath control and tilts. You wanna belt then the Cricoid cartilage has to tilt the vocal folds, wanna add vibratto then the Thyroid cartilage has to tilt the folds and both can be done at the same time. Then movements of the soft palate and tongue play another part but breath control is super important specially in her case because if she uses to much air the folds will bust open because they are not a tight seal as they were before and then they abruptly close back damaging them, this is the reason why Adele had a vocal chords Hemorrhage that forced her to undergo surgery (this abrupt closing is scientiffically known as as Bernoulli effect) and also remember that the higher the note the less air it need and viceversa for low notes. The other very important consideration that must be done is the fact that she has nodules since childhood so technically speaking the fact that Mariah managed to sing that well is because she uses different techniques to produce a sound and even more commendable in the fact that she can sing the same note in falsetto, upper chest belt, head voice and whistle (D5 which is a very low note for a whistle considering they usually start at C6 or around) Look at her on stage now she is stiff, barely moving because all of her attention and every muscle in her body is attentive to prevent the folds of blowing open so of course when she has not slept and is very tired she fails, she is frightened on stage. She already had stage freight since she was young but now is worst specially when singingin the USA, media and ignorant people have traumatized her and videos like this one and comments like yours are quite passive agressive borderline bullying. The fact that Carey even attempts to sing a song when she wrote it in the 90s, in her 20s at her 50s and pull it off is admirable proving how good of the singer she is and with this you need to consider the fact that her repertoire has the most complex vocal line in mainstream music, nobody today is capable of replicating her body of work, people like to say Ariana but she is not capable, she is great singer but Mariah is arguably, the best during her prime with insane dynamics, mic technique, fundamental understanding of what to do and how to correct in the space of a syllable and last but not least Ariana is a whole octave short in range so she will have to evade the extremes of Mariah's range both high and low , nobody absolutely nobody sings or even speaks in the same voice they had in their 20s or when they were kids. How can I assure why I assert nobody maintains their same voice throughout their live, well in Genetics it is called Shortening of the Telomere and dumbing it know for you is called aging.
If you listen to Mariah sing her newer songs she sounds amazing, better than the record even, (watch her AMAs, Good Morning America and Lat3 show Jimmy Fallon performing With you and The Distance from her 2018 album and you hear no difference because they are written andproduced by her to her skills, you never hear a pitchy or bad note because she has relearned how to sing for a 3rd time, but people expect her to sing Vision Love written when she was 18 and recorded when she was 19 and released when she was 20 is non sensical, stupid and ignorant and it sets her to a path so people can watch her fall on her face and that's simple disrespect, she is a legend. She is so good at what she does that she had to relearn how to sing in her 30s and 40s, adapt but there is only so much you can do. Comments like yours are cause of why she has endangered her life many times. You think that when she gets fat at times is because she is eating too much? No!, she gains weight because she uses long term treatments with corticosteroids to alleviate the swelling but getting fat is a side effect. How can I know that if she has never said anything? Well the face she gets is not a fat face is a swelled face because the excess of corticosteroids have taken her to a medical condition named Cushing Syndrome which is insufficiency of the Adrenal Glands because of extended periods of time with high levels of Cortisol and "Moon face" is one of the most recognizable symptoms. Also remember she is a diagnosed Type II Bipolar disorder patient which is characteristically a mental health issue related to depression and Hipomania and not about a person changing their mind, in type I the Maniacal phase is predominant in type II Depression is predominant and it never reaches to a full Maniacal state only hipomania and Depression or Hipomania will affect her singing, her songwriting and her personality overall . Opera singers stop singing their repertoire after 30 or after giving birth, fully stop and completely change it because they don't have the same voice anymore but Mariah has to sound the same otherwise she is a failure
Both you and the person that made this video clearly know nothing about singing or the Physiology of the voice let alone the Pathophysiology of the conditions she suffers and how it affects her. She doesn't have to sing anymore, she is 9ne of the richest singers in the World, she, her kids and grandchildren are set for life, she can sing and write songs just to practice her art with herself of family and release stress but she continues to sing despite mean people that instead of being thankful and appreciative of her legacy they are rude and very offensive too, but she doesn't stop amd that is bec5she knows she has a lot more to give to her fans and that's why her albums don't get much promotion because they are for her fans anybody else that wants to listen and understand why she is really a spectacular and A+ singer.
Don't offer opinions because it's clear that you are one of that people with empty and closed minds and mouths wide open, offer a comment when least you understand what is it that they are talking about and prevented bullying either non intended or thought of.

@@mijalakis3 all I got from that was excuses becuase you love her, which is fine, but let’s stop being delusional. No one thinks she is going to sound 25 again. I would be fine with her completely changing the key and arrangement of all of her songs to suit her current voice instead of lipping. As for the stage prescience and uncomfortable tone, she needs a vocal coach. She’s had these nodules for decades. She should have a vocal coach to guide her through every transition her voice is going through, but from the results we are getting she sounds out of practice, unprepared, and as a said before terrible at times. Mariah should sound the best at this age becuase her voice has fully settled and she should have years of vocal training to master her voice, but she sounds the opposite of the best

Mariah has to be disciplined and has to find her passion and love for singing, performing and creating music AGAIN. Either get surgery, and/or hire a vocal coach like Cheryl Porter to assist her. But she’s needs to stop trying to sing like her prime vocals, cause the straining is further damaging what little of a voice she has. She needs to fully accept her current voice and restructure her songs and lastly live a very healthy life style and workout which would also help her voice. If any legend can make a comeback it’s Mariah 🩵
Surgery would be too risky imo, the vocal cords are extreme delicate. A good coach and a speech therapist should work with her to rehabilitate her voice as much as possible and figure where she can sing sustainably, then she has to rework her material to fit that. I don't expect her to sing fully live again, but she can work to get a better balance between lipping and singing.

Her voice is STRANGE....it is changes everytime and unoredictable if she sing consistent again...but just look at One and All throughout the tour her just get improve ......so i will hold on to my faith that she will able to do so in her upcoming vegas....
She doesn't want to risk having that surgery but I feel like its her best chance at fixing the issues.
Daily practice, ongoing vocal study with a top notch instructor, staying physically and mentally healthy, changing keys to accommodate the voice where it presently is, etc. These are all necessary to keep the singing voice in good health and able to continue into older age. 55 is not to old to have an instrument that is in good shape, but it must be taken care of on a daily basis to keep it strong and flexible.

While I definitely agree that her singing technique has improved from 2022 to 2023, I don’t think she is lipping less. My guess is that Mariah is now much more cautious around her voice which is why she lips joy to the world intro now among other previously live parts. Whether she is doing vocal lessons is speculation, but she definitely seems to be doing something- when has her vibrato naturally improved from just rest?

Great video! I've been a lamb since the early 90s, seen her almost 20 times live..first time being rainbow tour. To me, the past recent vocal decline seems to be lifestyle choices like drinking, bad sleeping patterns, and "working" non-stop. Remember how rested and amazing she sounded in 2020? During her post-breakdown promo tour in 2001, she said in every interview that she finally knew how to say NO and when she needed rest. I wish she would remember that bcoz her voice has ALWAYS bounced back. Something seems to be happening behind the scenes that is adding to the vocal decline... and no not bryan, coz she sounded bad when she was still with him in 2022. I just hope whatever is going on gets sorted out bcoz she is thriving in her legend era and so many other legends her age and older sound in much better shape.
Yes, Mariah’s voice has changed as it naturally should with age and lifestyle, BUT every single thing described in this video is due to lack of training and practice. Her voice isn’t damaged. Just weak from lack of discipline. You cannot record album after album and tour without preparing for it. Just like you can’t do a triathlon without training for it
I'm a die hard Lamb, but talking objectively, I think she should get that nodules removal surgery at this point because even her whistles sound bad. I say it because the excuse is that if she gets them removed apparently she wouldn't be able to whistle again, which I know is her trademark but who cares? Her most famous song doesn't have a single goddamn whistle.
For years I've seen other Lambs excuse her saying it is a dangerous surgery and putting as an example the Julie Andrews case (mind you, almost 30 years ago). On the other hand (and more recent cases), Miley Cyrus and Adele have gotten nodules removal surgery and look at them.
I know Mariah doesn't gaf and neither do I about her having a 3rd wave, comeback, whatever you wanna call it, but what I really would like her to do is give fans a good quality show. Girl this is not a meet and greet, your presence only is not worth the ticket, SING!
Miley didn't have nodules, she had Reinke's edema. Adele had a hemorrhaging polyp.
Those pathologies are quite different from nodules.
The key part being, you can actually sing with nodules and they don't represent a health risk. She needs a speech pathologist and a good coach to re learn how to sing in a healthy way and rework her songs.
To be honest, her best years vocally were from 1990-1996. In 1997, her voice started to deteriorate, and this became very noticeable after the year 2000. Go back and watch her sing Hero live on Arsenio Hall in 1994.....it was pure magic. Unearthly talent. But nothing stays the same. It is what it is.
For someone who is a great songwriter she is TOO LAZY to rearrange her songs to fit her latest voice. Hence she had to lip sync or croak

Okay, here we go... Mariah NEEDS TO FINALLY take her voice serious and learn to sing AGAIN. First of all, a comparison between her and Whitney. Mariah never had a consistent technique like Whitney, and that's why Whitney's voice held for a long time during her years of drugs. And after she almost destroyed her voice, what do you people think she did? She learned to sing AGAIN from scratch. She rebuilt her technique, and she was able to sing again and give real good performances like IDKMOS and ILTY (but she shouldn't go on tour). Now, imagine how can Mariah sound if she actually make an effort to reconstruct her technique? Her voice was way less damaged than Whitney's. And for those who will come and critique me: 1. I'm a HUGE Mariah fan, more than Whitney. 2. No, I don't want her to sing like 1995 again, I want her to have a healthy and FUNCTIONAL voice again, and I don't wanna have to celebrate when she can hit a simple B4 with good technique and tone!! C'amon people, stop making excuses. Her problems are BEYOND age and every excuses you create. Mariah IS lazy, she STILL does not take care of her voice and does not applies and work to make her voice better, she only does the neccessary when it's too bad, and many times not even that, and part of the readon is bc she thinks doing the barely minimum or less is enough, bc people around her and us lambs don't have the courage to tell her the truth. Instead of worrying about her voice, she's worried about using dresses and super high heels that will make her stiff and barely move.... She's not that old, actually woman voices only matures around 45/50 years old, she should be COMPLETELY able to sing midbelts without struggling so much basically all the time. Is not about high belting, is not about whistle, is about being able to SOUND GOOD singing. Stop taking all the responsability from her. Yes she has noddles, but she still sings since she was a teen, noddles are not the cause she struggles with midbelts or has to breath between almost every single word or note. She needs to concentrate on what matters. It's her voice, her instrument. we don’t give her enough grace. i know no other singer with her level of fame that has to put up with the issues nodules bring while tending to billions of fans across the globe . for what she’s going through for 30+ years in my eyes she’s a genius. so glad that she’s still able to deliver for us lambs.
It’s just a matter of discipline. Just like an athlete, if you begin relying on your talent, and not continuously conditioning your muscles to be strong, you begin getting injuries.
But I’m in no place to blame Mariah for lack of motivation. I imagine it’s draining carrying your career independently for so many years, while battling potential mental illness.
Like have you ever wanted to crawl in bed and not go to work? Due to a breakup, emotional stress etc. imagine having to go on tour.

I delved into Mariah's discography last year in its entirety, and it has been interesting to see her vocal journey. One of the biggest what-if questions for her... I wonder what her voice would sound like today if her nodules were removed when she was still young? I get that her physician told her that her nodes would improve the quality of either her belts or whistles at the expense of the other, but her nodes subjected her to a life of inconsistency since she sings in spite of the nodes. I guess we will never know.

It's obvious that she needs vocal lessons.
As amazing as she is, her real vocals do not match the state she thinks it is at. She needs to be grounded and not be surrounded by yes men and women. She continues to have prerecorded engineered vocals to mask the current state of her voice, that is why when before prerecorded vocals did not sound so obvious, now you can clearly tell which ones are live and which ones are not.
Idk what the problem is with her voice, but I pray she seems help and takes her voice seriously, because as a huge Mariah lover this is just sad
I noticed a major change in her voice during the E=MC2 era... it has not been the same for me since even though I still love her.
Yes her voice changed during 1997-2008 but I honestly loved her voice on Butterfly, and Glitter in particular. That was when her voice was best post prime (Daydream) in my option.

Way back on the early 2010s her issues were more of "confidence" issues. With that, i've tried to see every new performances with hope that she gains confidence enough for her "technically healthy" voice to show up. Hence we saw great vocql moments from 2014 beacon theater, 2015 Jamaica Concert, 2016 SSFT, some of her Vegas Residency dates, as well dates from her Caution Tour). But with the turn of the new decade, it became very apparent that the technique itself is really deteriorating as well as her actual voice really losing it's entire quality. Her falsetto and whistle lost its tonality, tessitura became even lower, and fluidity became worst (her issues with fluidity started already during the mid 2010s). Most of her studio projects that came out past 2018, sadly has started to become unbearable to listen for me anymore 😢
Her low range is so beautiful I wish she would play with that more and quit trying to do so much of the higher stuff. That's not her lane any more but it feels like she doesn't want to let it go even though it's obvious that she's uncomfortable trying to do it.

another reason her voice is inconsistent now is bc she does not sing as often. notice how her voice got slowly better throughout her past christmas tour. its like that. if shes singing just one concert every few months she doesnt warm up and struggles more
This got posted one day after her promotional video (for her Vegas shows), so I thought I would see the clip with her new vocals. But you probably worked on this for weeks before posting.
Anyway, she sounds so much better and I hope she continues to improve. I dont even want "90s Mariah" back, I just want 2013 Mariah back but even healthier. She also used to be so clever with improvising and dodging notes when she couldn't do the original arrangements- I need her to use her musical intelligence like she used to in the 90s and 00s. That way she will sound good and comfortable...and most of all confident. It will be less of "she's struggling to hit the notes" and more of "she sounds good in this key " or "the change in the arrangement was great".
I'm so excited that I got tickets for her first night here in Brazil, September 20th! A dream coming true.

Her voice is permanently damaged unfortunately. And while I don't think her vocals now are terrible, they sure have been on a decline since 2013. The general public doesn't really give her grace (unfortunately) because Mariah is known as this world renowned vocalist, THEE Songbird Supreme of the industry, so they compare her vocals from the 90s and Early 2000s to now and its vastly different. I hope her new music is more raw and in a range where she'd be comfortable in singing it live.
I so missed Vision Of Love and My All being live i missed that passion...
All this happened before her voice magically gotten better.

I don't care if she lip-synced her whole concert. She has given us songs that will transend time. I've love her voice no matter the change. At her worst she stills sings better than most of the artists now. So any negativity towards her is lazy and disresctful. Her job was to sing and bring joy or help us through something emotional. She did that! I'm never here for Mariah Negativity!

I think 2022-early 2023 was a transitional period for her voice which lead to all the inconsistencies and cracks in the 2022 performances,her voice got lower and darker, you can hear it even in the yes and remix and her recent video singing it’s like that.
She most likely got more settled in her new thicker and lower voice and I know she will sound good and do the best she can with what she has now

So many people don't know her early work from the 90s when her voice was at its peak. When people ask who my favorite singer is, they're usually surprised when I say Mariah Carey because the voice people have heard the last 10+ years is not particularly worthy of any fanfare. Frankly, most of the women in my church choir could sing circles around the current Mariah. I love her, but I kinda wish she would stop performing live. I want to remember her incredible voice the way it was in the Tommy Mottola years (gasp).

I've always been an advocate of the fact that Mariah doesn't have anything to prove, and I still firmly believe it. But I feel like Mariah suffers from the fact that she doesn't feel like she has anything to prove AND she has a lot of thing to prove. She doesn't feel like her vocals need proving anymore, and this was apparent a few years back when she seems to hint that her songwriting far outweighs her singing, and while I agree, the difference in importance isn't so far as to invalidate her vocals. At the same time, it's like she has stood on the ground that her singing is 2nd andd is something she cultivated via talent and don't need any outside help to it. This lead to her probably not seeking professional aid with her voice.
But I definitely agree something has changed. I definitely feel like she's come around to someone for vocal stuff. And what you said about "when she can, she more likely will" rings true. She's putting out more music, she's going to perform a lot more, and most importantly, she is more eager to show her stripped singing. Her direction changed from "I need to prove that my stance about my voice has been right" to "I need to prove my voice are intact". She's been using her whistles in her speeches a lot with vibrato too, maybe it's a fun thing, maybe it's showing off, but she's comfortable with it. the problem is not her voice, the problem is her technique, Beacon theater 2014 showed that when Mariah works on her technique she can even sound similar to the 90s, Mariah needs a good doctor dedicated to vocal technique (not a vocal coach, vocal coaches are useless). her nasality has to stop, currently she is so nasal that she can barely open her mouth to sing
I really hope that she would sound better on her Vegas show

TBF i think most of the problem seems to be the nodules and less the techniques really even when she dodges notes or create other variation to make it easier to sing verses/choruses its seems to be pretty okay techniques outside of the higher notes, like her speaking voice/singing voice has clearly shows that her nodules are affecting her alot

I believe if Mariah was trained or was brought up in church she would still have majority of her voice
To me it's probably a matter of her not being disciplined with her voice training and preparation, as she admitted.
The way she sounds like a vocalist supreme at one concert and then like a total beginner singer in another concert is wild to me. How has she been singing so many years and seems to still not fully grasp her own technique well enough yet? she would be much more consistent if she did. Also the fact that she's struggling even on the 4th octave belts.

She already has a fragile voice to begin with. Add to that her biggest problem, which is LACK OF SLEEP, and then on top of that, the stress of a busy workload back in the 90s/early 00s, and you have a recipe for vocal disaster.

The only sad thing here is she has been lipping Vision Of Love which never happened before 😢 I believe a couple of months with voice lesson could help much. But I think she is so much into the studio creating music rather than taking care of her voice.
Unfortunately, her nodules have continued to thicken and she's had kids, so her vocal changes were inevitable. She cannot sustain an E5 as a soprano, which is tragic. She barely uses vibrato and her tone is very thick. You can see her struggling and trying very hard to make sure the notes come out with the right tone. Her voice lacks the freedom and altitude it once had. However, there are loads of performances where she has a lot of ease - which is wonderful! Despite all this, I am grateful she still performs so passionately for us. She literally gave herself to music, sacrificed so much, and faced many obstacles throughout her career. I will bite my tongue because she is my idol and I have too much respect for her.
Mariah’s voice is inconsistent - unfortunately she has more “off” days than not. Tour dates don’t care if you’re in good voice or not, the show must go on.
Edit: Mariah gets a lot of hate for lipping, but Celine has been lipping for YEARS with little to no public outcry.
I think something else interesting to note is that her falsetto and transitions to it from chest voice seem harder for her too, which is really not something she’s struggled much with throughout the years
That`s due to Mariah`s aging voice , it`s something common among singers once they get older (especially those that had a wide range) . I remember noticing the very same thing with Patti Labelle a number of years ago.

I just want for her to be able to see that her voice just can't do that high belts anymore. She should work with a good vocal coach to lessen the gritty sound of her voice and make her sound more fluid again.
Mariah Carey is literally thrown for the Lions, no one believed that She Could do that , People said Impossible that Someone can Sing That High ( The Whistle Tone ) She Pushed her to go on stage and proof Her doing it.
This Brings a lot of Pressure along.
She had to Preform almost every day for Years and Years.
Beside the She was not Born to Sing ,Because of her Nodules, It's like Polyps on Your Vocal Cords.
Some how She find A way To Sing Around Those Nodules ( almost Impossible ) but She Did
So when You are getting Older , You got to Pay the Price.
They are damagedand will keep on getting worse.
That;'s why She Cannot sing Like Before.
And never will Be!

I find her current vocal placement & position of her larynx, in attempt to mimic the brightness she had in her early career, is too high. IMO, I would happily accept for her to sing in lower key if it meant that she will sing well.

Singing outside her comfort zone (belting has always been physically strenuous to her even during her glory days), lack of rest/sleep (especially during the divorce/butterfly/rainbow era), smoking (pre-debut era as some lambs claim). Those factors really contributed to her early vocal decline.

I kinda agree with what you're saying her voice is not exactly the same and that's fine she can still sing it's just not the same as the 90s and early 2000s and that's fine and I rather her lip 99% of the concerts because at the end I rather her spend more time working on new music in the studio since I know she likes doing that and then we will get more albums and she'll be able to approve and keep her voice also I know a lot of people are going to hate me for this I am a hardcore lamb but I'm not going to lie about things and this goes with any fan base like people are gonna not like negative comments especially if you are a super fan of the artist like it's okay
She needs to rest and stop drinking alcohol. Don’t speak for like a month. Then get Patti Labelle to teach her how to access her mix register again like in Daydream Era.
She just can't sing anymore. The voice is stiff, dry, and her belting range is dramatically reduced.
Her voice got worse after 2020? So, is it the clot shots or did she actually undergo surgery and it made her voice worse?
Shes just old and out of her prime... its actually that simple. Why shes continues to take money from fans knowing that she can't sing any of her catalog anymore is beyond me. Just hang it up.
