Aretha tended to be a mixer rather than a belter, especially in mid 70’s onwards, but in the Dinah Shore clip it sounded much chestier than she would usually do. Just wondering what you all thought!
BELTS technically dont exist after a certain point. Depends on the singer, type, etc etc but even sopranos cant "belt" above C5 its just not possible. Everything after that point is mixed with certain amounts of chest ratios in them which is why some "belts" sound chestier, balanced or heady. Its just different ratios. Like whitney in her prime uses mostly chest coordinated mix while mariah in her prime used a more balanced mix most of the time then there's celine(post 1995) where her belts had a higher ratio of headiness which is why she sounds so heady after the early 90s. They usually train singers (in classical training at least) to sing with a more lighter and mixed approach as its more healthier, also im oversimplifying things A LOT here since there's a lot more detail and proper terminology to cover but for a you tube comment section im sure this will suffice otherwise this paragraph would turn into a 7000 word essay and ain't nobody got time to read all that😅
First of all, chest and head ratios don’t exist. Second, yes, we use a lighter M1 with higher frequencies the higher we go, but that doesn’t mean that M1 is M2 or that it gradually turns into M2. It stays as M1, so its still belted, just in a lighter way.
@@shadowcArey Again.....i oversimplified a lot of terminology for "understanding" purposes, i didn't wanna go into the gritty detail of it all because there's A TON of misconceptions amongst the vocal community here on you tube that kinda needs rectifying which is why i did not go into said detail....but yes you're right lol.
@@user-qr9hr7qc7i If you go to my community tab, a new cover of Aretha Franklins I did just released. Just if that’s your thing, if not that’s cool too. I appreciate that you took the time to let me know you enjoy my content!

I think the 1975 GRAMMYs performance is amazing.
Aretha really sells it.
She’s so pretty
If I didn’t know any better I would’ve thought she was Diahann Carroll during this time period!
Lo@@clamclam3
She can do it all and everything in between, which is why she is the best.
All belts are mixed above C5, she just had a more heady mix in the first clip and a more chest dominate mix in the second one
The first IS balanced mix? Its sound note chest .but no heady also

yes but how to differentiate between M1 and M2 if it is lighter, because at one point it becomes impossible to differentiate no?

Both were done beautifully , I`d have to say that sounded much more like a full chest belt in the Dinah Shore clip .
They both sound belted to me just different approaches
Both were belted but the grammys performance was less heavy
The first IS less power .. but mixed? I don't know really ..maybe be mamy balanced ?
I think its still mixed but one is more head mix and one is more chesty mix
I like your videos ❤
I’m glad you do! Have you checked out my singing channel?

Curbed vs overdrive. Both are belted.
