  • In this episode of ARA, you will see an eBay NTSC C64c cleaned up and have a sound fault repaired including a PAL modification. Like the Amiga, The C64's best market was in Europe. Due to this fact, 90% of the Games and Demos are designed for PAL compatible machines, NTSC variants may have issues with these or wont be able to play them at all. That is why this Video will be your PAL... ;)
    Enjoy!

    Fantastic video dude

      Thanks. I am glad you liked it. I think this is on of my better videos. Except fort calling the 8580 the 8520 (The newer SID chip vs the Amiga CIA chips), it was pretty good :) So many numbers. I prefer to do live commentary versus dubbing. Seems more natural for me (and easier from an editing point of view).

    You sound like Phlox from Star Trek: Enterprise! So soothing. Loved the video. Will be doing the conversion myself as well.

      A limited but neat machine. My first attempt at Basic Programming was on the VIC-20, but then again, that was quite common on Computers of that Era :)

    My understanding was that you needed to do three things in the C64c to convert an NTSC machine to PAL:
    1) Remove NTSC VICII and replace with a PAL VICII
    2) Remove Osc Crystal and replace with a 17hz crystal
    3) Bridge Jumper
    Yet in the video it appears you only did step 3? So do the 3 steps above only apply to older models? IE Does the C64C only require the jumper change? A bit confused...thanks!

    • @amigaretro4765
      @amigaretro4765  5 років тому

      That is correct. All three modifications are needed.; a PAL VIC-II chip, a 17.734475 Mhz crystal and a jumper pad bridged (or on the older C64 models, a jumper wire moved). No doubt, finding the PAL VIC-II chip is the most daunting task for availability and price reasons. It's worth it thought if you can find the chip on e-bay. I should have explained it better, sorry for the confusion.

      @@amigaretro4765 No problem, thanks for clarifying! Have 2 VICII PAL chips enroute so appreciated!

    37:11 Do you know something more about the "infamous" crack music intro? Cheers, M

      Unfortunately, I do not. You do get results if your Google "Triad C64". I am not sure if what you seek lies within but it wouldn't hurt to look :)

    You spent a lot of time warning about failing voltage regulators in c64 power bricks but you just stuck a SID chip into a board without testing the internal 9v supply. The external saver box isn't going to protect you from internal voltage problems.

      Thanks for the tip. I did test the internal voltage regulators prior to the video after I repaired the damage the original faulty power supply caused. Lesson learned :)

    The name of the background-music?

    • @amigaretro4765
      @amigaretro4765  5 років тому +1

      The music is from the UA-cam Audio Library; the tracks are called "Cloud Control" and "Ether Oar".

      Thanks.. Today i will get a C64 I just bought, what the best chemical to get rid of yellow tangents?

    • @amigaretro4765
      @amigaretro4765  5 років тому

      The chemical you seek is Hydrogen Peroxide (Liquid or Gel). I personally have not tried Retro-Brightening yet, but there are many videos on You Tube that show several methods. Perhaps one day I will be brave enough to attempt this, I have some very yellow Amiga Keyboard Keys that need attention.

      Thanks for info, peroxide seems working but I will not try to boil the tangents wich I saw in a video

    Bug plaguing the drive? What's the bug?

    • @amigaretro4765

      Here is an excerpt from Wordpress (dot) com: (ilesj.wordpress.com/2014/05/14/1541-why-so-complicated/)
      It’s slow as hell
      The 1541 may be the slowest consumer disk drive throughout the history. And it’s a known “merit” of the drive. There was various reasons for the legendary slowness, mostly having to do with the unusual implementation, bugs, and prorities on how to overcome the discovered issues.
      The VIC-20 was the first Commodore computer to use serial bus for disk drives. Both the VIC-20 and its 1540 disk drive used the MOS 6522 VIA as an interfacing chip, and the intention was to use a hardware shift register offered by this chip for the serial data transfer. However, it turned out that there was a bug in the chip’s shift register that could lead into data corruption. Apparently it was too late to fix the chip or change the hardware design of the computer and disk drive. Instead, the hardware serial data transfer was replaced with a slow software implementation. And it appears that this software solution to overcome the hardware problem was whipped up rather hastily. But that’s how the machines shipped.

    the pins on old chip could have just been dirty also

      Thanks for the tip. I will try the old 8580 on my other C64c, once the other Vic-II chip I have on ordered comes in. Would be nice if that was issue. These chips are not getting any cheaper :)
